Title: 1911 in 9mm To Carry
Post by: Ed M. on May 09, 2008, 03:55:28 PM
I’m new to the forum (first post) and I find the videos on the website to be interesting and very informative.  In fact I have directed others to the website for that reason.

Recently Michael B. wrote about how pleased he is with his Para Carry 9 and I am at the point where I am also looking for a smaller 1911 in 9mm to carry.  I currently carry a Kahr PM9 which is good but not ideal.  Anyway, I would like to hear from the forum about experience with other popular small 1911s like the Springfield EMP, Kimber Ultra size CDP or Aegis and STI Escort etc.

I have fired about 200 rounds through an EMP and thought it was a real nice gun, but they are so pricey, I don't know if it's worth the money.

I'd like to have a 9 also but I have to be satisfied with a LW Officers ACP in .45 as one of my carry guns.  100% and I love it.

I've had a Detonics since the mid 70's, in 45 ACP, and have never had a problem.  I even used it in early action pistol shooting before the sport went to space guns.  It's still a great pistol.  Disadvantages: all steel weight for every day carry and cost in today's market.  Advantages: all steel weight for quick recovery from recoil, excellent trigger, 1911 style, and no grip safety.  Detonics is back in business, but I haven't seen one in a store since I started seeing the ads.

Detonics has been back in business in 2 or 3 incarnations, but has yet to PRODUCE anything but hype.

EMP's are incredibly engineered weapons.  I carry the Glock 30 on a day-to-day basis and prefer the .45 but the EMP is on my list of guns I have to own in 2009.  A friend let me put about 100 rounds through his and once I'd put the first two or three mags through the EMP and figured out the best way to wrap my meathooks around the gun without getting in the way of the slide or the muzzle, I found it to be just like every other 1911 I've ever carried.  I can cover the thing with my hand and put five rounds in a playing card size area stat at gunfight distance.  Coming in at $1,000, they're a bit pricey, but I have yet to buy a gun that I'll ever sell.  Guess that makes the Pythons and S & W K Series from my pre-teen days excellent bargains!

My Kimber's are in .45 but they're great 1911's, as is a Taurus 1911 I picked up from a classified ad, and even the rock-bottom priced High Standard I recently ordered.  They're such well-designed weapons that as long as someone sticks to the basic blue-print, they're going to produce a fine weapon.

I haven't fired the EMP in .40 but want to soon.  If you're not locked into the 1911 style, take a look at Springfield's XD in 9mm in an ultra-compact model.  I keep one in the car for emergencies and you have the option of hanging a light under the front.

A 1911 in 9x19mm? Ain't that like a Ford F-150 with a 4 cylinder engine?

Personally, I wouldn't want to get hit with either.

  Do you mean 9mm or .45, or 9mm or Ford F150 ?

When it comes to carry I want one of two things,  big boom or lots of capcity.  a 9mm 1911 offers neither of those.

That is assuming you can handle the big boom.  Some people can, some can't.   I've personally never found a comm'l 45 loading that I could not double tap quickly and accuratly  with out of a gov or commader.

The EMP is certainly an excellent choice.

More 9mm bashing, I see.

The 9mm is a great concealed carry round, and a great alternative to a .380

As far as the 1911 in 9mm, I think that the EMP is probably your best bet (Isn't it interesting how many 1911s "with 4 cylinder engines" Springfield has been able to sell? Me thinks they are on to something!).

Me thinks its ammo cost.

I disagree. I think that the vast majority of gun purchasers don't really factor ammo costs into their buying decision - they just go on the assumption that ammo costs are relatively about the same from caliber to caliber. The 9mm is a very advantageous caliber for concealed carry (low recoil, less weight, high capacity, sufficient stopping power, etc...). Yes, it is a trade off, but everything about concealed carry is a trade off.

45 ACP is without a doubt the ideal pistol cartridge for self defense, but it does not always lend itself to ideal concealment options, and especially not deep concealment. If your particular concealed carry options dont allow you to carry a mid to full sized .45 everywhere you go, then I'll take a 10+1 subcompact 9mm over a .380, .32, or a .38 special wheel gun any day of the week!  -------Make mine a Glock 26!

I ahvent had the chance to fire an emp but they are comforable in my hand, and even if u dont like the 9mm or .40 cal options, you can upgrade to the micro compact in .45... or you could go real small with a para wart hawg in 9 or any other of the hogs in .45, then again kimber makes a pretty nice compact 1911, with options in 9mm .45 and some options in 38 super... (none of the 38 supers are compact to my knowledge) i personaly prefer springfield to kimber and para, but thats just me
