Title: Vices
Post by: alfsauve on January 17, 2018, 03:23:16 PM
(We don't seem to have a "gunsmithing" section, so I'll just put this here.)

NO!   I don't mean like drinking, dining and dillying.   Get your minds out of the gutter.

WORKBENCH VICES

I know that Les and Mercer and others are experts in metal working tools.  I'm just a hack.  But I've had it in my mind I needed to upgrade my consumer grade vice to something bigger and of higher quality.

Below is a picture of my 40+ yo vice. I might have gotten a Mont. Wards.  Or it might have been JC Pennys when they had a tool section.   It's a "WORK" brand.  (Try Googling that brand.)

So how does one figure out who's a quality brand?   Search "workbench vice" and list in order of the  most expensive down.  I chose Wilton.  Did I do okay brand-wise?  I know it's not connected but Miss Kitty owns a ton of Wilton Cake stuff, so the name felt comfortable.  (I read Wilton's history so don't repeat it back to me here.)

Since my older one was a 4" I went for a Wilton 6".   I didn't stop to think that the width of the jaws would be proportional to and about equal to the reach/grasp/bite.   Cool.   My old "work" had about a 180degree backlash.  The new Wilton, as best I can estimate has about a <5 degree one.  I like it.

I found a dealer on Amazon for this $99+tax, free shipping.   Of course the Amazon delivery person left it by the street!  Didn't bother to come down the driveway with it.  Only 40+#s ;)

Now to borrow Michael's Dremel so I can "do" something with it.

Those are a pretty good Vise, You did good for the money. There are more expensive units out there, But I doubt that they would do the job any better. Good Luck with it.

Vise. It's spelled different so people can tell what you're talking about when they read it.

It looks good to me, but I like mine better because I can rotate it 360 degrees horizontally. There's another different type of jaws on the bottom too.

It's been a long time since I've bought one (so I can't attest to current quality standards) but I've always preferred a Wilton vise. There's a 4' square steel work table in the shop my uncle built when I was three that has a Wilton 8" on one corner. He and I worked a lot of metal using that vise over the years repairing farm implements and fabbing things. It was used when he got it and still works like new.

As for vices, I don't have as many as I used to.  ;)

When I first read the thread title I honestly thought it was going to be about drinking liquor, smoking tobacco, etc.

Anyway my cheap vise works just like this one except it doesn't have a locking pin, so I can turn the head to any angle. And I do use it at unusual angles sometimes. It's nice to be able to rotate my work so one end is elevated. You can get an Irwin brand like it at Lowes for 80 bucks or go cheaper other places. You also have the option of spending $100 more for another brand that's basically the same thing if you want to.

Vices are like Motors or gun safes. There is no replacement for displacement. By the biggest heaviest Vice you can find.

Now I've got to ask.  Are you .45 or a 9mm kind o' guy?

I carry 38+p. 10 mm and 45 cap.   The 38 is for when, I need max concealment/ grab it throw it in your pocket for a quick trip(in it's pocket holster)

There are only 3 9 mm a man is aloud to carry, 38 super, 9x23 win mag and 9x25 billion.  Just saying.the only 9 i own is mine side arm from the coast guard.its a dog fan with way too strong of a trigger spring.

Okay.  Wait. I get it.  Comes from the Navy battleship and a/c crews doesn't it.

I can join in, being I worked quite a bit on the two largest planes, C-124 and C-5A.

A speed related phrase...... or at least that's where I've associated it all my life...heard many times at the racetrack pits, and uttered it often myself.
If everything else is equal, the engine with more cubic inches is faster.

I agree, however my 2 liter turbo puts out 248 HP on premium gas!

My 79 Camaro with a small block V8 was pretty piggish at a mere 135 HP...  friggin EPA sucked all the fun outta it...

Things change...

It really only stands true when everything else is close to equal, like a 350 vs 454 but both built the same way and used in the same type vehicle, same rear gears etc, then the larger cid should win the day.

Indeed....times have changed in the horsepower world.
Turbos and superchargers can make the smaller cid perform equal to larger cid engines.

Had a 2000 Z28....350cu and dyno HP was 345..ate anything on the road not costing 2 or 3 times as much...

Surprisingly, it handled fairly well too....

People on ATV forums say it too. Generally speaking a 500cc has more power than 400cc, but if the 500 is a 4-stroke and the 400 is a 2-stroke then it's a different story.

The horsepower you can buy from an online source is crazy!  We’d all be dead if we had that in the 60’s and 70’s!

Got a MI buddy with a matching numbers ‘69 Camaro, SS 396/375 with original M22 Rock Crusher, stock rear end and nothing changed since he bought it in ‘73.

He said it ain’t seen a wet road at all but the night I saw it a few years back since ‘78!

You guys do know Shelby tricked a 2.2L Fiesta that would out run his 350 Mustang.  Of course, the Fiesta was a lot lighter car.

If the Mustang was stock, it's not a real surprise.

Unless the stock car is a big bucks issue, a tricked out anything will have an edge...

There are guys on the Magnum (Dodge) Forum that are running 1000+ horsepower in the 6.1 liter Hemi's with just a supercharger or Twin Turbos, no NOS. They have said that it would get scary with NOS.

Modern engines make power we could only dream about 20 years ago.   It use to be if you were making 1 hp/1ftlp per cubic inch you were doing good.  10 years go it was 1.25.   Now it's 1.4.  You can buy a 490 hp  small. Lock Ford with everything but fuel and oil for less then 5k.   10 years ago that would be been 25k, 20 here it would be been race only.

I remember when 1 HP per C.I. was considered good but now some engines are coming real close to 2 HP per C.I. They keep getting more power out of smaller engines.

I never thought I would get anything smaller than a V-8 in a full-size 4x4 truck but it makes a lot more sense now than it did before. My 2001 Silverado has a 4.8 liter V-8 that only has 270 HP but I've always been happy with the performance. Now they have a 4.3L V6 with 285 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. of torque.

horse power to keep RPM up helps too... used to race a 153 cu in Chevy II (4 cylinder)...Lunati profile cam, TRW pistons, 409 truck flywheel, wide ratio 3 speed, 4.56 gears with a 26" tall tire...if you bogged it you were screwed, but if not your competition had better have something that would mile per hour at the lights... we got away with staging sideways for a couple of years before they outlawed the procedure (better roll on the lights)

Well yeah but from your years of posts it always seems you like to apply the brute force option first!

On the cars business you guys drifted too I remember the suckey 70's too well...I had a Mustang II with the little 6 cylinder.  Cry me a river the thing sucked bad.  A couple of my boys have 2017 Mustangs with the Coyote 8 cylinder and they  lope around with 435+/- HP and the 2018 should come in around 455 HP.  This boggles my little mind as I throw back to the 70's.  Also...the dang things stick to the road so much better now after they ditched the solid rear axle.  If I could lose 50 pounds I might really want one....

Wow, has this thread done some drifting.

We still haven't touched on knives or barbecue recipes, or re-loading.  That shouldn't surprise me, but it does.

People crack me up when they say how much power their motor made on the dyno....   but how much power  is it making  when you are using It?   If you never go above 4k rpm,  who cares what you  make at 7k.

People are always amazed that I actually detuned  my diesel truck to make less hp, but keep the same torque...  It is very simple, it made it so I can get 1.5 mpg better.    While that is not a lot, it does increase my mileage by almost 10%.   On drive 60k miles a year, that's about 400 gallons of fuel. Or to put it another way, $1000a year more in my pocket. While not a lot of savings, every little bit helps and I am not giving the .gov as much money in taxes, which is always a good thing

If you are referring to my comment, what the situation was is that Chevy way understated the HP of that Z28 and road testers wanted to find out why it was killing cars with listed HP much  higher...so they did the testing...I said dyno really not knowing what procedure they used...

Past that, I needed another gear...or two!

Great fun bracket racing at the 131 Martin Dragway, High School drag days..

A guy I went to high school with put a 454 in his Nova. I heard it was fast but never experienced it for myself.

On the subject of vices, the seven deadly vices according to Dante were:

1. Pride or vanity
2. Envy or jealousy
3. Wrath or anger
4. Sloth or laziness
5. Avarice, covetousness, greed
6. Gluttony
7. Lust
