Guy makes a mistake? Or is it more sinister than it appears?

Hard to judge from this particular story, but the county deputies seem to think it's ok!

Brought a gun and ammo to the checkpoint but still made his flight ?
Was it already in an approved locked container and he just checked the bag instead of carrying it on ?
No telling from the story.
