Title: Black Friday Sales -- Post Them Here
Post by: Big Frank on November 22, 2023, 08:26:07 PM
20% off on your entire purchase at Storacell from NOW until 11/26. Use code BF20. And free shipping on orders over $50. I've been wanting these for a couple of years and finally got them. I got different colors for AAA, AA, C, 123, 18650, and 9V. 1 9V and 2 of everything else, plus a 5 buck battery tester. I can keep a 4 pack or 6 pack of everything in the car and in the house, except I don't need to carry 9 volt batteries in the car. My order was a little over $50 after the 20% discount so it ships for free.

APG Defense. Black Friday Only! 15% OFF all items in store. USE PROMO CODE: THANKFUL. NOVEMBER 24, 2023. One of their products is an AR-15 Bayonet Lug Extender - Adapter for 16" barrels with carbine length gas systems. If you've ever mounted a bayonet on your 16" barrel with a gas system designed for a 14.5" barrel, you know the bayonet ring ends up slapping the barrel as it flops around. The AR-15 Bayonet Lug Extender - Adapter brings the bayonet just far enough forward that the bayonet ring goes around the flash hider where it's supposed to be, and holds everything in place as solidly as it does on a 14.5" or 20" barrel. I saw mine today when I was looking for something else, and tossed it back in the box of accessories yet to be mounted.

https://www.apgdefense.com/

P.S. It's after midnight so the code is active now. I saved $5.40 on my order, which wasn't much more than the $4.99 shipping on my Ultimate Offset Sight Mount. This mount doesn’t require a rail slot! It can be mounted at the tail end of your rail behind your last rail slot, allowing you to mount your primary sight all the way back on the rail. You can even use it to mount a smaller secondary sight like a red dot sight offset to your primary sight for close quarters conditions.

Not bad.  You can do better.  It depends on what it is.  If it is a full auto then yes, it is good.  If it is nickel boron that's really good.

For $50 you can get a Stoner from Midway USA https://www.midwayusa.com/s?searchTerm=bolt%20carrier%20group&sortBy=5 (https://www.midwayusa.com/s?searchTerm=bolt%20carrier%20group&sortBy=5)

And then these guys have things too.  Though Midway has more premium items offered if that's what you want.

Big Frank, thanks for searching out these bargains.  Been tempted with some of the Milspin offerings.

Spent my money on a small portable power unit, the Jackery 300W/295Wh unit. Normally $249-$259. I got it from Amazon for $199.  I also got a replacement for my 2m/440 rig for the new truck. (F-150).  My old ICOM had lost all the back light bulbs. Yes, bulbs, incandescent bulbs.  The cost to replace or upgrade to LED was too much. Getting the ICOM 2730, which has the same basic UI as my older rig.

You're welcome, Alf. By the way, the last thing I got from Milspin just a few days ago was a Save A Warrior Auto Metal Badge. It's 2" x 3.5" Die Cast Metal with 3M All Weather Adhesive. I already have the Legacy Logo and National Logo Save A Warrior Vinyl Decals, but the metal badge looks better.

Save A Warrior has officially partnered with Milspin to bring you the best gear possible. Milspin is a veteran-owned company based in Columbus, OH – employing veterans to craft the finest products known to man. Milspin is donating 20% of all revenue of sales from our store back to Save A Warrior to support our life-saving mission. We are grateful for their partnership, and know you’ll enjoy the quality of products they create just as much as we do.

You will like that Jackery unit.  It's great for small things.  We use it for having a light bulb or two on for extended periods.  I used to dedicate the Jackery to the cell phone booster....until I got an uninterruptible power supply for the booster.  So when you look at the price of a solar "generator" and the use it may be cheaper to go with an uninterruptible power supply if you aren't concerned about plugging the alternate power source into a solar panel.  Plus the UPS doubles for a surge protection, is online and standing by 24/7, and you don't have to worry about recharging it when the power comes back on.

Here's another solar "generator" I have experience with to consider for $150 with the coupon off:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SG55MGC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SG55MGC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1)

Low power use uninterruptible power supply for my booster:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FWAZEIU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FWAZEIU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1)  If power stays down for a while I'd have to switch to the Jackery or something else.

To power the camera security system, internet source router, internet bridge and other routers this is what is used: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06VY6FXMM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06VY6FXMM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1)

When we sold out the company I ended up with several UPS systems.  I've added 3 or 4 units since then.  I really like not having to monkey with anything when the power goes out or flickers.  But...I sacrifice plugging them into a solar panel which isn't a deal breaker for me for the applications I have.

I have a UPS running my Internet modem, router and VOIP (plus a small night/light).  I've got the 2,400Wh solar unit in the garage that I can power lights and freezers with.  The truck has a 300W unit but the engine must be running.  This will be for those occasions where I'm either away from the truck or I don't want to idle it for several hours just to get 120Vac.  Plus I can charge it off the solar cells at home.

Over Halloween to run my SFX for the kiddo's I opted a long extension cord.  Now the whole thing can go anywhere.

I remember your solar unit in your garage.  Now that it has some age on it is there anything else you'd do with it?  I hope to gather up a solar backup system after the holidays so any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think I'd go with a 2,000W inverter instead of the 1,000W one.  Most of the hand-held power tools draw too much to use on the current inverter.  Of course that would mean going up a size in wiring and main fuse.

It powers my bench grinder and belt sander and all my various battery chargers, including the Jackery portable I just added.  I'm fairly please with it as BACKUP unit.  While it is on wheels, because I went with Gel batteries it's very heavy.  While that's a downer it's not worth the price of LiFeP batteries.

I STILL don't have a UPS Battery Backup for my computer. I really should get one this winter, before rain freezes on trees all over the city and weighs them down. The ice usually doesn't take trees down, but snaps off a lot of branches every year. When my power goes out, it's almost always just a blink before the next transformer or substation, whatever, has the power back to 100%. Just long enough to where I have to reset several digital clocks. But once in the 32 years I've been here, the power was out for several hours. If I didn't have a sleeping bag and battery powered camping lantern, I would have been VERY cold, sitting in the dark. At least the gas and water still worked so I could cook, and make full use of the indoor plumbing, instead of going in the back  yard like an animal.  If I had a UPS on the computer, if it was big enough, I could turn off the computer and plug in the chest freezer if the power went out a long time again. The freezer is only about 4' from my desk, in the dining room. I don't think it would fit down my basement stairs, and never felt like trying it. My freezer and stove are on opposite sides of the wall so I only have to walk through the doorway to get from one to the other.

So why the gel instead of the LiFeP?

So why the gel instead of the LiFeP?

<SHORT VERSION>    Cost.  1/5 the cost of LiFeP.

<FULL STORY>

LiFeP has two major advantages.

1) Its cycle life (50%+ discharge and back to full) is somewhere in the 7,000 range.  If you discharged it every day then it would last ~10 years.
2) Very light weight compared to Gel (20%-25% of a Gel cell).

Disadvantages:

1) Cost.  4x to 5x what a Gel Cell costs
2) Can be ruined in freezing weather.   it's the charging cycle that kills them and most caution about using them below 40f.  You can; install it in a heated environment, or don't use it below 40f, or pay even more for cells with a built in heater, which shortens the capacity.
3) Complicated.  Very complicated internally, which multiplies the possible points of failures.  Not like the old NiCd days.  If one of your Li power tools goes defunct, crack open the case and take a peak.

I have yet to fully (50%) discharge my batteries, so the increased cycle life of LiFeP is no advantage in a purely backup situation.  The weight is a bummer but I only plan on rolling it from one side of the garage to the other.

One other thing: LiFeP  and Gel cells nor do not self-conflagrate,  That is they won't catch on fire by themselves and they won't sustain a fire.   Unlike Lithium Cobalt, LiCoO2, and Lithium Manganese, LiMnO2 which are used in cars, scooters, etc.. and catch fire seemingly frequently.  I've notice Golf Cart makers tend to use LiFeP rather than the others.  I

Thanks.  Your explanation just saved me a ton of research time.  I read where LiFeP batteries need to be heated...I did not know they could be ruined by cold weather though.  I just thought that it was a capability diminishment.

And yes, complexity is a bugaboo.  Especially when you come to rely on something.

Self-conflagration....I did not know that LiFeP were safe in that manner...gel cells yes.  We used a lot of those offshore for backup power to start equipment from a cold start condition.

Storacell has The Festive Duo Combo Pack for just $6.55. Each of these battery  caddies normally sells for $4.95 and they aren't available in these colors. So you save $3.55 and get a limited edition. The code for buying 5 or more could apply, but these sets probably count as one item if it does.

I like the idea of those, but like how small my UTG Pro Super Slim M-LOK Handguard feels. It's only 2.2" tall and under 2" wide. The BLK LBL is narrow enough but it's 2.56" tall and weighs twice as much. I'll stick a bipod on the rifle when I want to, like an  8"-12" center height UTG Recon 360 TL Bipod, M-LOK for 90 bucks if the bipod I already have doesn't work out. And do without the excess weight the rest of the time.

Rain isn't the only driver. I am aging, and I am often amazed at which once simple task becomes more difficult. Pinch strength, whether thumb and forefinger or whole hand over the top of the slide, is becoming less reliable.

For this rifle the weight is a non issue.   It actually does weigh a little less than a the same length hand guard and a nice bipod.

Price is pretty much the same when you compare similar components.   Also unlike most bipod it does not make the barrel muzzle  heavy in the closed position.    I already have  the can and a different  stock.  I just threw that one because I had it.   I have a fully adjustable  stock whe mono pod it route.   Barrel is still  18 weeks out
