Title: Inexpensive 9mm plinker, any suggestions?
Post by: Wheelgun Dunn on September 04, 2008, 07:07:41 PM
Looking toward an EAA Zastava M88 ($250) but don't know anything much about them.  Any info or alternate suggestions?

Thanks!

I don't know that much about that particular gun. Most of the time, you get what you pay for and occasionally a little bit more. I know that sometimes I see Ruger P-89's, P-95's and S&W Sigmas go for that price new. There's been some poor reports about Ruger's SR9 lately, but the P-89 is solid as is the P-95. These are guns that came out while Bill Ruger could still approve or disapprove, even if he wasn't the man in charge anymore.

The M88 is an updated version of the Tokarev. Don't know much about the quality. They are being made in Serbia or Croatia.

If you look you can get a good deal on Glocks, M&Ps, XDs, and FNPs for around $400 new or less used.  Check GunBroker and GunsAmerica.  A lot of people have had really good luck with the Taurus PT111 for about $350.  I've also seen 92Fs used (police turn ins usually) for that.

Hazcat got a nice, new (to him) affordable plinker recently. Purrr-haps he will share the good mews.

If you really want to go cheap, check out Hi-Point firearms. I've never owned one, but I always see them at gun shows and I know they've been around for years and years.

Hi-point is a big no-no!  I want inexpensive, not cheap!  Just looking for a plinker, not a carry gun or compact, no competition either, just an inexpensive, hopefully reliable fun gun!

You should be able to pick up a SR9 REALLY CHEAP.   :-X

PURE BS!  I own one!  Have shot 5,000 + rounds of every make and type including reloads.  IT SHOOTS STRAIGHT EVERY TIME!

Budsgunshop.com has CPO 226s for $500, delivered to your FFL. That's probably the upper end of what you're looking to spend, but if you consider that you're really only giving up 1000-1500 rounds or so for a gun with a repuation for reliability and accuracy, it's probably a better investment (long term) than a $250 gun and $250 in ammo. Plus, it can double as a house gun, and you can never have too many house guns.

Hazcat,

Wow!  Great luck with that Hi-point.  I never knew they were that reliable.  Never heard a good thing about 'em at all.  The ones I handled seemed clunky and left me a little dissatisfied but I appreciate your input I really had no idea.  No offense intended just going on what I knew.  Didn't mean to get the hair on your Hazcat back raised up!  :D Thanks!  ;)

Don't short change the HI-Point.  See the linked review:  http://www.shootingtimes.com/handgun_reviews/hipoint_100605/

After reading it, while they are not the most pleasant pistol to look at, they sure sound like they get the job done.  Last Saturday, I burned through enough .45 ACP ammo to buy one of these and still have money left over for dinner.

If I could get one where I live (which I cannot), I'd buy one in a heartbeat.  You really only see the sights when your squeezing the trigger anyway...

JMHO......Good Luck!

Tim

Take it as "not hear say", this is the real deal.  Also their customer service is excellent and their warranty is lifetime unconditional.

PLUS made in the USA.

I've seen surplus Makarovs pretty cheap. It's a different 9mm but still a 9. It's a little more powerful than a .380 but the ammo is CHEAP. The .32 NAA conversion is pretty neat too. The 9x19mm I really want is $1,400 but I have to settle for one I can afford. I'll be checking back here again to see what's out there.

Probably....but if you're interested in trying to hit something with it, I'd try something else. There are some real deals around on used Sigs and they are reliable and great shooters.

S&W Sigmas

Their trigger is terrible...... They seem to be reliable and would probably make a decent inexpensive personal defense gun, but their mushy trigger is frustrating to try to shoot for any real accuracy.

This forum needs a "nuthouse" where the jokes and BS can go on 24/7 without interfering with serious business. Not that it matters much to me, but it might to someone who wants a serious answer. Just an idea.

Damnation, jumbofrank! You made me feel so guilty I did a little research. Emphasis mine.

While DefenseReview still recommends that the reader save up for a Glock 19 (G19), Springfield XD (9mm, .40 S&W, or .45ACP), Smith & Wesson 5906 (9mm), or some other more expensive pistol if he/she needs a ready-out-of-the-box carry gun for serious social purposes (CCW, home defense, etc.), the C9 may just be worth taking a look at by those who need an inexpensive pistol in short order and simply can't get $500 or more together for those more expensive pistols in the requisite amount of time, or if one is just looking for an inexpensive plinker for recreational shooting.

That's from an article on the Hi-Point C9 $140, according to the article here: http://www.defensereview.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=928 (http://www.defensereview.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=928)

Question time. How much would you pay for a brand-new, 9-shot, American-made 9mm semiauto with very easy to see sights, shoots to point of aim and total reliability thrown in? Would $500 sound reasonable? Sounds like a great bargain doesn't it? Now what if I told you it is possible to have all of this for only $149!!

That is not the sale price, that is not the wholesale price, that is not the best bargaining price--that is actually the retail price of the Hi-Point C9 9mm semiautomatic pistol.

OK, there is one drawback. It's ugly! Not as ugly as the pictures I've seen with the added comp and extended magazine, however it is not what you would call a swan, more like an ugly duckling. When I bring out my ivory stocked, engraved Colt Series 70 .45, the Hi-Point runs and hides behind the couch, when my Wilson .38 Super with giraffe bone grips enters the room, it peeks out from its hiding place. However, when someone enters with a Glock or some of the other similarly styled semiauto, the Hi-Point C9 boldly enters the room.

Wait! There's More

In addition to all of the other things mentioned, the Hi-Point C9 comes with a lifetime warranty and a second optional ghost-ring-style rear sight. The regular sighting system consists of a square notch rear sight with two red dots mated up with a sloping front sight with an inlaid white strip, both of which are very easy to see and set to hit point of aim.

FINALLY!  Hi-Point is getting some recognition.

Pretty?  NOPE

But is is just FINE in everything else and WAAAAAY above average in cost, service and warranty.

For the price of 1 H&K P7 you can get 10 Hi-Points and hand them out as Christmas presents. If that's not an inexpensive 9mm plinker I don't know what is.

I went to Hi-Point's site and found this:

which is this:

with... stuff... added - roflmao!!

Saw the price, $220 - stopped roflmao and said, hmmm. You can get a 9mm plinker CARBINE for less than most pistols... and  hand them out at Christmas.

Also, Hi-point has a .380 (9mm short if the original poster is interested) for less than the 9mm...

True ... the High Point has had better reviews than a SR9 and it looks better than a Glock.  I still have issues (I will get some counseling) shooting something that ugly.

I would recommend saving your money and buying a "gently" used SIG or Beretta.

I heard years ago that several police departments used the Hi-Point Carbine but can't confirm it. If true that gives them more credibility. There's an aftermarket stock by ATI that makes it look more like a Beretta Cx4 Storm.

I have fired that carbine a few times- a guy I know has one. It's not bad...rough as hell...seems like it's got nuts and bolts hanging out all over the place, but it's fun, cheap, and always goes bang.

I owned a Hi-point 9mm for about 12 years...just sold it last year to a friend of mine that wanted a plinker. I paid $109 for it in '95. It was a great plinker...but I would not carry it with a round chambered (came with a big orange sticker on it warning against it). The one I had was single-action and a sharp blow would cause the sear to release the striker. I don't know if they have changed their design since then. Mine didn't have adjustable sights or last round hold-open...the new ones do.

"Went home with a 10 at 2. Woke up with a 2 at 10".- SorryIdon'trememberwhowrotethis.

Out of the last 350 folks coming through the NC Concealed Carry Course I assist with, I recall no function problems from the Hi Point armed students. I do recall numerous alibis from the high dollar guns. The company owner has stopped making remarks about the Hi Point pistols. Klunky but reliable, and accurate enough.
