Title: New Browning Buckmark
Post by: billt on May 25, 2016, 05:53:40 PM
I picked up a new Browning Buckmark Hunter Model the other day. It's the top one in the photo. I really liked my Camper UFX Model, and I've always been partial to longer barrels. So when I saw the Hunter I grabbed it.

I liked the Cocobolo grips so much I bought an extra pair for my Camper Model. It came with the grey / black rubber grips. They looked and functioned OK, but the Cocobolo grips look so much better. Changing them out took about 5 minutes. I also bought the proper grip screws because the grip screws for the rubber grips are larger. They lined up perfectly, and tightened right up. I got everything from Midwest Gunworks.

I like the day glow front sight on the Hunter, as it really stands out. Both have the fully adjustable rear target sights. The Buckmark really balances well. It's almost like pointing your finger at the target. Hopefully I'll get out to the local indoor range next week to light it up. I picked up some extra magazines for it as well. I got one of those, "Employee Pricing" cards in the mail from Cabala's last week, so I got them for a bit less. They're hard to find for some reason. I usually get them from CDNN for just $19.99 each, but they've been out of stock for a while now. As have many others. If this new Hunter runs as well as my Camper model does, I'll be pleased.

Nice!  Can you mount scopes on both or just the hunter?

The Hunter is set up for any type of Weaver or Picatinny optics mount. The Camper would require an aftermarket top mount set up. I'm not sure if anyone makes them. My guess would be an outfit like Tactical Solutions. They make a ton of customizing gear for both Ruger and Browning .22 pistols.

Those are nice Bill. I'm currently without a .22 handgun following a bad break-up with a Ruger 'Lite'....her fault not mine :)

That may be the way I'll go - Thanks for posting.

I thought my Contour model with full length top rail rocked tacti-cool, but I'm like your Hunter profile.

"Loved" as in past tense? Say it isn't so Tom!

As long as we're on the subject, I was wondering about the fiber optic front sight, and carrying it in a holster. Has anyone done this? I ask because these things strike me as being delicate, and easily damaged. I also have one on a Ruger Mark III .22 pistol. The Camper UFX Model has a solid metal front sight, that seems a bit more suited for holster carry. Has anyone here ever broken a fiber optic front sight by carrying in a holster?

Another thing I wonder about is the insert staying put under recoil? This obviously isn't a problem for .22's, but could be on some of the Magnum calibers these sights come with. I like them because of how well they stand out. But like so much now a days, I'm just not sure of their durability over time.

I had the FO rod  in my 1911 come out, but I just put in a new rod and a tinsy, tiny dab of instant glue at the front and back support.  Careful not to get it on the front face.

Haven't had any problem with the FO on my IDPA revolver.

For some reason, I saw this morning the "official" directions for changing FO rods and it was exactly what I said.  Instant glue, tiny dab.  For the above sight it said only on the middle support to make it easy to remove/replace later.

This stuff is great for things like that. It only takes a fraction of a drop. We used this stuff to bond graphite electrodes for EDM machines when I was working in the mold business. It holds unbelievably well, and it also conducts electricity. It is unaffected by oil, which was a good feature because EDM machining is done submerged in an oil tank. Now, some of the newer machines use deionized water. This stuff was originally marketed by Eastman Kodak who were the actual inventors of, "Super Glue".

Only two Buckmarks on our approved roster.  What a crock of shite!

And a new Buckmark UDX Plus makes 3! I couldn't help myself. Yesterday I went to Cabela's just to look around, and saw this Buckmark Plus UDX sitting in the case. I asked to see it, and that was that. Now the best part. They were on sale for just $429.00 from $479.00. I asked him if they had one in the back. He looked and said that was the last one they had. I checked the gun over very carefully, and there wasn't a mark on it. The breech face was smooth and shiny, and showed no firing pin marks from being snapped. (As most know, this can be an issue with rimfire guns that have been extensively dry fired).

Before I said, "I'll take it.", he told me as I stood there looking at it carefully, that I could have it for just $405.00! And it gets better. Browning currently has a on line rebate program running, that gave me another $25.00 off! So when all is said and done, I ended up getting a brand new Buckmark UDX Plus for just $417.24 out the door! Considering that the UDX Plus is at the high end of the Buckmark line, I think I got an excellent buy.

My bathroom remodeling project should be all finished today, so now I have 2 new Buckmark's to light up for the first time!

Which 2 models are "allowed" in the communist state of Mass.? I would think it's all or none. The internals should all be the same.

I want something blued or parkerized, duracoat...  Whatever Browning does.

Don't know about one.  Gotta check.

Camper SS and Contour SS 7-1/4.

MA requires every design be approved regardless of similarity.  About 5K per gun model to the shysters...

Oh there you go, thinking again.

You should know that's not the way when dealing with governments.   Logic has no place.

I breezed through 2 years of tax classes and tutored many students to good grades with two simple sentences:  Leave "fair" at the door when you come into the class room.   When faced with a choice of what's fair and what's good for the IRS, pick the IRS.

That just goes back to the Golden Rule.   He who has the gold makes the rules.

Yes, those are the Browning factory grips the UDX ships with.

Yeah I was looking at those too.  It sure would be nice to take it down with one button.  But, alas, I have Mark II and I can't justify getting another...sacrilege that it may seem.

Bill, when are you going to get a Ruger Mk IV ?

I'm going to give them about 6 months or so. That should be time enough to make sure there aren't any "bugs", and get enough of them on the street where the price will fall off a bit. Of course I'll want to handle one first, and have a good look at it. The only thing that concerns me is how well the barrel / receiver remains tight after a lot of cleaning and use. Ruger really needed to address the horrible take down involving these guns. It looks like they finally have with the Mark IV.

According to the video at the bottom of this link, it says, "Mark III magazines are compatible", which is good news. However it also said the frame is machined from, "a solid billet", instead of being 2 piece welded steel. It didn't say if it was steel or Aluminum. I'm thinking they went to Aluminum because it's cheaper to machine than steel. Plus they can skip the welding.

I'm old school. And the one thing I always did like about the Mark II and Mark III, is the fact they're one of the very few .22 semi auto pistols still being built on a steel frame. The only other one I know of still being manufactured is the S&W Model 41. And the street price on those are over twice as much as a Hunter Mark III.

The blued Target model has an aluminum frame and the stainless model has a stainless steel frame. The aluminum frame is about 6 ounces lighter. The Hunter model is also stainless steel. I hope to see a standard model and 22/45 in the future.

Are the Stainless Steel models milled from a billet the same way the blued Aluminum models are, or are they manufactured some other way?

If it's aluminum its anodized, not blued.  I'm still intrigued but like Bill, I'll wait, probably a year.

This video confirms what Jumbo said. The Stainless Model has a Stainless Steel frame. The blued model has an Anodized Aluminum frame. If I go with one it will most likely be the Hunter Stainless Model, like the one in the video. I have a Mark II Stainless Competition Model that is similar. I definitely want the Stainless Frame. It's beautiful the way it disassembles so effortlessly. It really looks like a nice piece.
