Title: Looking For A Good Digital Camera ?????
Post by: billt on June 04, 2017, 07:59:22 AM
It's about time for me to replace my little 2.1 Megapixel Sony Cybershot. It's not a bad little camera, but it's time for something better. I want something for gun photography, that will show good color and detail. I'm noticing the newer ones will allow up to 40 minutes of video if you use a large capacity memory card. (128 GB).

What kind of cameras are you guys using? I haven't shopped for a camera in over 18 years. So I'm still living in the dark ages, technology wise. I was thinking along the lines of something like this. But I'm not sure? I wouldn't mind hearing Mr. Bane's opinion on this. He has more than likely forgotten more about digital gun photography than most of us will ever know.

Well my wife has been Nikon/Fuji person for 20+ years. She currently has a 12MP D90-X and a D-7200(24MP) which does 1080P  And the D-90 does 20 Minutes of 720P video in a 32GB card....With Nikon your lenses are interchangeable across the whole line....not so with Canon....

What is your budget?

Yes how much can you spend? The 3400 is a Base model. The Lenses are ok. My wife has the 70-300: good Crisp clear lens but Nikon introduced a 55-300,...if your doing High speed shooting for Firearms Photography, something like the D620,D750, or the D7200

My wife is big into the camera thing.  She just got a Canon EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR .  They are really pricey but it works really well in low light with motion.  She's had two other Canon camera bodies and so far everything Canon is backwards compatible with the lenses she has accumulated.

With this new digital revolution I think the technology performance will continue but the quality received is about to plateau...which means I won't be buying a bunch of cameras in the future because the old one is really obsolete.

Dr. Football has the best focus though.  What's your price range and zero in on what is best.

What kind of photos are going to take with the camera (action, product shots, portraits)?  What are you going to do with the images (online only, prints, enlargements, mostly video)?

Thanks Rastus! I'm just a tech head and I do my research. Since I'm on the Media Side of the Gun Biz, were at SHOT every January and other events like the Rimfire challenge matches near us where we have to Juggle shooting With Shooting!!! My wife does most of the Photography and I do the Back end.....

The D7200 is a fantastic camera, if it is within your budget.  Right now they have refurbished bodies for $799.96.  I have a Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.0 lens.  Really good quality at an affordable price, plus it has a good macro range for close up work.

Brian he said he wants to do High speed, Gun pics...Gotta have at least 20MP and some nice Glass. We got a Sigma (For Nikon) fisheye, a 12-60 Sigma for Nikon(we also have the "Big Ma 50-500" -that's from when we were in Football Media, but we also Shot Airshows with it. I will attach a pic)
If you have a Costco card the 7200 Package with the 18-55 and 55-300 lenses for $1400, which also includes a bag, 2 Memory Cards(32Gig I think) and a set of filters .....they also have just the 7200 Body for $549 and you can shop other venues for the best prices on the lenses you want. The Tameon 18-270 is$599...good all around lens if you can only get one right now..

I bought a Nikon COOLPIX L32 on sale. It's nothing fancy but it does what I need it to. The quality isn't bad for maybe a $100 investment. Instead of buying a USB cable, when I want to transfer pictures to my computer I just pop out the SD card and plug it into one of the half-dozen different kinds of slots on the front of the computer. http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/compact-digital-cameras/coolpix-l32.html

I would like to stay within the $500.00 to $750.00 range if possible. I know these things are like anything else. They get better as the price goes up. I'm guessing with a 128 GB card, the amount of photographs you can store are just about endless. How much do the high megapixel cameras, (28+) use up per picture? Remember, I'm used to 2.1 megapixel.

Also, what about the flash? I have a pretty good flash from my old Canon A-1 and AE-1, 35 MM film cameras from the 80's. Will the "hot shoe" on it work with these new digital SLR's?

Hey Bill we share a great first name! You need to be able to get those pics off the card to continue shooting as they do take up a lot of space. A 28MP camera will not be at the $750 range. You could put a better lens(like a 14-85 wide angle) on that 3400 but you get what you pay for as you already know. If that's all you can afford right now, roll with it and save for a better body and lens later...

I had an AE-1 program a long time ago. No they don't but flashes are not expensive unless your doing professional work. Nikon's entry level Flash is under $200.....We got an third party Nikon Mid level Flash for $219. Try finding the 3400( or a step up to the 5500) with more accessories in the Package, like a 2 battery grip, and a remote.

Do you need to have interchangeable lenses?  There are some really good compact cameras out there with large sensors and good zoom ranges that let in a lot of light.  I have an Olympus Stylus 1 camera that has a 28-300 f/2.8 (the smaller the f number the more light it lets in and allows you to use in lower light) lens that continues to blow my socks off with its quality.  It also shoots at 12 frames/second.

Second, stop worrying about megapixels.  Megapixel counts are more for marketing than anything else.  12 MP or above should suffice for 95 % of the people out there.

Third, if you decide on an SLR (pick one, they're all pretty good), I would suggest getting an upgraded lens with it (the kit lenses with most cameras...not so good).

As far as flash goes, most cameras have a built-in flash which is really good for fill-in flash to lighten shadows during the day, but not much else.  You might want to try it out for a while to see if you think you might need one.  Cameras today are amazing in low light situations.

Brian is spot on about the megapixels.  That's what I meant by maturing technology that is improving.  They could give  you 50 MP but it would not be very good to look at if that makes sense.

I would push the megapixels to 12 and above and stay under 20mp.  Then look for what accommodates our shooting...if you are going to shoot in low light it's good to have a flash better to have a camera that performs well in low light....for example choose 12 mp that works in low light instead of the 20 mp that performs poorly in poor light.

You'll figure it out.  Go peruse Amazon and the ratings people give them.

All good Points. Brian I like Olympus as a brand, their stump is good. I have one of the waterproof models. APS(Advanced Point and shoot) with the right sensor & Flash may work out. I (we)have a Nikon mirrorless (J1) is also very good and a compact size. BillT you can do it I'm sure...if it gets Daunting we'll be here to help!

Where did Bill say anything about high speed? He said, " I want something for gun photography, that will show good color and detail." I read his post a few times and if he said anything about high speed I missed it every time. I don't know that much about video but it doesn't take a $1,000 camera to take decent still pics.

Frank, to me that means High speed as in Processor, shutter speed etc etc...My wife's cameras shoot at 5 and 8 frames per sec and my little Nikon J1 is 4 per sec, and even our pocket Cool pix 6100 shoots 3 per sec....

i have a 12 year old Nikon that is 5.1 mega pixles that was the best one at the time....

I bought it because it takes regular double a batterys not something strange.   my recommendation is you find one that is the same.   something you can get batteries for it every where.

A couple pf years ago we bought a Nikon package deal through Amazon.

It has the Nikon D3200 (24.2 mp) body, standard Nikon 70 lens and a Tamron 300 lens (both with UV filters), remote control, external flash, tripod, bag, two SD cards, charger and a couple other do-dads. We paid $550 shipped. I later ordered two more batteries and a spare car charger.

Great battery life between charges (especially if not using flash).

It takes great photos, and is user friendly.

Each photo uses about 13 to 14 megs of space.

My sister-in-law has a Canon Rebel 18 mp and there is no comparison in photo quality.... the Nikon flat out performs it (in my humble subjective opinion...heck, I have a Kodak 14 mp that takes clearer photos than her Canon). **Not knocking Canon cameras, just that model she has.

We use the 300 lens way more than I thought we would, and it really is only too big for indoor and really close ranges.

You can photograph guns without a fast shutter speed or a fast processor. Plenty of people do. It just depends on if you want stills or action shots or video which I don't think Bill specified. We'll have to wait for him to tell us what he wants.

A couple more points.

1.  Memory is inexpensive, but don't go cheap.  Plenty of good cards out there to choose from, but the really cheap ones are bad news.  Also, if you're planning on doing video or shooting a lot of photos in succession, make sure you get cards that are fast enough to keep up with the data transfer (it will say on the card how many MB/sec they can accept or what video resolution they're good for).  Otherwise you will be frustrated.

2.  Peg brought up a great point about batteries.  At least one spare battery is required.  It is not optional.  What do we always say about carrying a gun?  Better to have one and not need it...

3.  A good photo editing program.  You don't need Photoshop for basic editing.  Photoshop costs as much as a car anymore, I swear.  There are others that do well for not a lot of money.  I've been using Adobe Lightroom for the last couple of years (since I don't work for a company that pays for Photoshop anymore), and I've been very happy with the results.

4.  Peg also mentioned his sister-in-law and her Canon.  Go back and review my prior post about the kit lenses that come with cameras.  Canon is especially guilty of this.   ;)

Lastly, if you are just looking to take static photos of guns, smart phone cameras are annoyingly good under the right conditions (part of the reason I no longer work for Olympus - people stopped buying point and shoot cameras):

First off Brian, Your pictures are beautiful! Especially that engraved Colt Single Action Army! That's basically what I'm looking to do. My wife wants me to photograph my whole collection, along with providing descriptions and value estimates. In case something were to happen to me, so she wouldn't get screwed over trying to sell anything or everything.

I always try to keep the latest S.P. Fjestad Book Of Gun Values on hand. But that can get confusing to someone who doesn't know guns, conditions, etc. So that's the main purpose for this camera. To provide something better than my little 15 year old Sony Cybershot can. I suppose I'll need Macro. Do they all come with some type of Macro setting? ($500 to $750 range cameras, like the Nikon and Canon I posted?) From what I've read SanDisk memory cards have a pretty good reputation. Even the 128 GB seems affordable. And as you mentioned, an extra battery sounds like a necessary investment.

I don't need high speed for video. Just something for basic short video's. (Stuff like my dog, or me at the range, etc.) Nothing like capturing auto racing, or anything like that. My old Sony will shoot "video". If you really want to call it that. It makes the first motion picture of, "The Great Train Robbery" look high tech. And it only lasts a few seconds. So whatever I end up with will be a massive improvement over what I have now.

Also, can you charge the battery on these new cameras off a USB Port? I have USB Ports on my new Jeep. So it would be nice to be able to while you're on the road. Say, on vacation.

Echoing a few things above:

1) Memory.  Cheap memory can be slow when TAKING pictures making you wait until the next shot.  That's the biggest hangup I've had.  I like cheap and can stuff a bunch in my pocket but when it affects me by making me wait until the current picture is recorded then, well...enough is enough spend another $5-$10 on a card.

2)  Speed.  No you don't need a fast camera...so to speak.  I loosely equate speed with the ability to take lower light pictures.  Evaluate that need for yourself.  You may want something "faster"...again...the ability to have a flash is sometimes a crutch for the inability of the camera to take a good lower light picture.

3)  USB.  Heck yeah, I don't know of any now that don't have USB plug ins for downloading the pictures and if it does that I'd be 98% certain it will also charge the battery.

4) Wi-Fi.  Many of the newer models, if not most, now have Wi-Fi built in.  That way, for instance, if you are charging in your jeep and want to dump the pictures to a laptop then you can.  Now...I don't know what the transfer rates are or what the error count is but for me pulling out the chip and popping it into the laptop is quick and easy so Wi-Fi isn't a big deal for me.  Maybe someone can correct me on this...but Wi-Fi is not a determinant in my book.  Wi-Fi may be nice to have...but since it does not affect quality of the shot I don't really care whether or not it has Wi-Fi....seems like a gimmick for what I do.

First off, thank you!  That's very kind.  One of the added benefits of having a camera with a larger sensor and a lens with a large aperture (smaller f number) is the ability to blur out the background so your eyes go to the main subject (in this case the SAA in the front).

If you're looking for macro in an SLR you are looking at getting an upgraded lens with a good macro range or a dedicated macro lens.  One of the benefits of point and shoot cameras is they usually have a macro setting built-in that will allow you to focus very closely.  Olympus is famous for this because they are, at the end of the day, a microscope company.

SanDisk memory cards are all I use.  Never had a problem with them.  Still, backing up all your images to a couple of places is a good idea.  What is it Michael says?  All things made by man break eventually.

USB charging - Some cameras can. Some cameras can't.  Just a matter of doing your research.

WiFi - Full disclosure, I'm addicted to WiFi in my cameras.  Especially the Olympus.  It allows me to control the camera remotely, change settings, even zoom the lens with my smart phone.  Once the photo is taken it can be transferred to my smart phone for immediate upload to social media or Flickr.  Some cameras are more capable than others in this regard.

By the way, your photo of the Ruger is REALLY good!

Here is another question I have. With the old 35 MM film cameras, you had to set the ASA of the film on the camera. How is it with these digitals? Is it something that is just obsolete, and no longer a concern? How does the camera know the F-Stop in relationship to the shutter speed? Bear with me here, it's been 35 years since I popped the shutter on a 35 MM camera. As they say, I know just enough to be dangerous.

You can set the "film speed" manually or have the camera set it automatically.   Just like film, the higher ISO will give you more grain (noise in digital) in your image.  In program mode with auto ISO the camera will set all three variables (shutter, aperture, and ISO) for you.  Most cameras give you the ability to customize some of the settings, like telling it to not go above 3200 ISO, for example.  Must go back to work now.

Wow, 5 pages of posts in 2 days.   Just saw this.

I'm no camera expert, and do maybe passable amateur stuff.  When we went on our Italy trip I wanted a compact PnS to make travel and picture taking easy.    I've a preference for Canon, and I got the PowerShot SX520 HS.  It's been surpassed by more current models, but this little point and shoot has a 42X zoom.

Here's the Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence shot from a mile away, hand held.

Yep.

I've talked with several local photographers that hire out and freelance and they all pretty much agree that for most casual users, the AUTO setting on a quality camera will fill the bill usually.

Most have custom settings that are easy to use as well, for example "portrait" or "action" and some have indoor/outdoor and day/night easy settings that are separate from the standard "program" or "manual" settings. These are usually as simple as turning a dial. They tell the camera what you want to do and it adjusts certain settings to compensate.

If you wait until around Thanksgiving, you can get some incredible deals. I priced out the package we bought as individual items and the total fell in the area of $1400 or so depending on where you bought from. We paid $550 via Amazon.

2 words of advice: Cyber Monday. Relax and take your time. There aren't any crowds to deal with.

There's a big shopping mall a few miles outside of the city limits here that I haven't been to in a couple of years. The main road to the mall has traffic backed up about 3 miles most days from Thanksgiving to New Year's. I avoid that road as much as possible during that time. I can find most of the things I want at amazon.com anyway. And it pays to compare other sites too. I bought a super heavy duty padlock to replace the one I broke a key off in. I found it at amazon.com for around $35 and at the place I bought the original lock from it was about $130. I got shafted big time on the first one.

Anything you want from amazon.com you can get at https://smile.amazon.com/ and support your favorite from among nearly a million charities. I'm currently supporting The NRA Foundation, Inc.. They get 0.5% of the purchase price on everything I buy. It doesn't sound like much but as of May the total given to all charities is over $54.5 million and over $62,500 went to The NRA Foundation,Inc..

No love for local camera stores?  They are disappearing faster than local gun shops, and for mostly the same reasons.  They are a valuable source of information and training, just like the local gun shop.

Also, keep in mind that most, if not all, the camera companies have strict Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) policies.  If you see an online price significantly below MAP, you're probably looking at grey market goods (not meant for sale in the US and not imported by their US subsidiary).  If you have a problem and send your grey market camera back to the manufacturer for warranty repair, they're going to laugh at you, and then charge you a lot of money.

Just a couple things to keep in mind.

Nice pictures Brian, Peg, and BillT.  I especially like the Colt.

No camera stores locally or nearby anymore.  Had one here for decades, but it closed before the net took off.

I would suggest getting a couple of smaller memory cards rather than one large 128GB.  All the eggs in the same basket thing.

I just bought a Pentax DSLR with crop sized sensor and haven't even used it yet or finished reading the owners manual.  I was torn between that and an Olympus micro 4/3 camera.  In the early 80's I bought an Olympus OM-1 SLR and three prime Zuiko lenses, and later a Zuiko telephoto zoom lens, used.

Had to do a lot of brushing up on the digital stuff, and have lots more to go.  What I liked about both the Pentax and Olympus cameras I was looking at was that both had Image Stabilization (IS) built into the camera body instead of the lenses.  Additionally both had some weather resistance built in and weather resistant lenses are available.  Both had an operating range down to 14° F whereas many digital cameras are only rated down to 32° F.  Weather resistance (WR) and colder operating temperatures may not be a factor for you in AZ, but dust might be. In Michigan the WR and lower operating temperature makes sense to me.

On of the reasons I wet with the Pentax over Olympus is that the Pentax is a SLR with an optical throug the lens viewfinder as well as a screen.  Some cameras do not.

Additionally virtually all older Pentax K-mount legacy lenses will work on the DSLR Pentax cameras.  They won't work in a fully automatic mode, but will work in manual mode.  I think the only way the legacy OM Zuiko lenses will work on the current Oly camera are in manual mode with an adapter that Olympus no longer makes, but third party and aftermarket adapters are available for OM series Zuiko lenses to Micro 4/3 and OM to Pentax K-mount.

I may still get an Olympus micro 4/3 camera also.

Brian, what are your thoughts on the different sensor sizes, FF, crop, 4/3, etc. and using legacy lenses with adapters?

I live in a decent size city of 100,000 people and I haven't been able to find a single camera shop anywhere in the city. The Dive Shop which is very close by has pictures of 2 underwater cameras on their website but they aren't among the 6 things they sell there.

I found one camera store in the county online. It's almost all freeway driving to get there so it's only 20 minutes away according to Google maps and it's only 1.3 miles past a gun store I'm familiar with. Among other things they do repairs, have a photo lab, and can transfer just about anything audio or video to CD or DVD. I might visit sometime just to look around.

Brian, what are your thoughts on the different sensor sizes, FF, crop, 4/3, etc. and using legacy lenses with adapters?

I had an OM1 I loved, too!  In good light all sensor sizes will give you really good results.  If you're using the camera in really low light (high ISO), or are making huge prints or are cropping a stupid amount, then larger sensors are generally better than smaller sensors.

Some people endlessly debate this camera vs. that camera, this sensor vs. that sensor.  What they tend to not do is go out and take photos.  Enjoy what you have.  Pentax makes some fine cameras and lenses (as do Olympus, Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Sony, Panasonic...).

As far as lenses go, we still think of everything in terms of 35mm.  With all the different sensor sizes out there, it gets confusing.  For instance, a 50mm lens on a 35mm camera is considered a "normal" lens.  About the same field of view as the naked eye.  On a 4/3rds sensor a normal lens would be about 25mm, and on an APS-C sensor camera (your Pentax) normal would be around a 35mm lens.  I could go into the math, but even my eyes glaze over when I do.

This is why most lenses are thought of in terms of 35mm equivalence.  This makes it easier for our little brains to process.  So that 25mm micro 4/3rds lens is said to be "50mm equivalent."  This also leads to a lot of arguing and hand-wringing on the internet by people who spend more time arguing and hand-wringing than photographing.  Come to think of it, camera people are a lot like gun people.

It ends up that if you like telephoto (bringing things closer) it's easier to do on a crop sensor camera.  A 300mm lens on your Pentax will give you an image that would require a 450mm lens on a 35mm sensor camera.  Cool, eh?  Unfortunately, wide angle is harder to do with a smaller sensor for the same reason.

Legacy lenses on digital cameras.  Cool, awesome, neat!  Unfortunately those lenses are designed to be used with film, and digital sensors capture light a lot differently.  Most analog lenses give pretty crappy results on digital cameras.

Sorry to blather on.  It's late and I should be in bed now.

I see blackwolfe mentioned Pentax. My first camera was a Pentax Auto 110 that I bought in 1982 or 1983 while stationed in Germany. It came as a kit with 3 lenses, a flash, and a winder. It took good pictures when you consider the tiny 110 film format. According to Wikipedia this model was the only complete ultra-miniature SLR system manufactured for the 110 film format. I always liked SLRs because what you see is what the camera sees, unlike my current cheap digital camera where the rangefinder sees one thing and the lens sees another. My Auto 110 is long gone but I still have the box and keep some gun parts in it.

I think Minolta had a 110 SLR before Pentax, but it had a fixed zoom lens.  Pentax had the cool system.

I may be prejudiced but I think the Pentax looks way better than the Minolta.

My favorite old 35mm is a Minolta SRT-101 that I bought at a pawn shop twenty-five years ago for $75 along with a 150mm second lens.
The thing takes incredible film photos for an old camera (it's been years since I used it, though).

Nice comments all. Hope everyone had a good Father's Day. For Mother's Day I got the wife the new Tamron 16-300 for her Nikons, both of which have IS  in the Lens and Body( the older Body had it built in in 2008-The new one we got at Costco a few months back which is a 2014 model). I also got her 2-32 & 2-64 gb cards so she is set now, we also have 2-32's for the Nikon Coolpix 6100 pocket, and the J1, as well as the Toshiba 1080P video cam....(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170619/2dcedf4929bb93bad31c838f4cff4623.jpg)

A lot of people have cell phones and the cameras seem to be getting really good but I've never had one. A couple of hours ago one of my friends was talking about giving me a cell phone that belonged to her mother. My first cell phone will be nothing fancy which suits me just fine. I just want it for emergencies and don't need or want a smart phone. I don't need it to be a camera or MP3 player or anything other than a phone.

I have a Motorola Moto G smart phone for myself and my wife. I paid $100.00 for each of them, and $42.00 a month for both with service from Consumer Cellular. It has a camera that's pretty good, but nothing like the high dollar smart phones have. We're both happy with them, and I have them both paired to the hands free phone in our new Jeep. That said I would never pay high dollars for the latest Samsung or Apple smart phone. I just don't use them often enough.

My friend has been trying to talk me into getting a TracFone for years that only costs $19.99 for 90 days. I just looked online and it's only $17.99 for 90 days with Auto-Refill. I don't think I can beat cell service for $6 a month. I looked into Consumer Cellular too a while back but just kept putting off a decision on what to get. I don't even know if my new phone will have a camera on it but if it does I expect it will be crap.

I bought a camera last year and took some pictures and printed them up to show my insurance agent what I have. My music collection includes over 500 CDs and some tapes and records. If I didn't have proof of the number of CDs I have they wouldn't all be covered. My agent put the pictures in my file in case I ever have to make a claim. That's one good use for a camera that more people should take advantage of.

I thought I got my camera last year but it was the year before. Here's a picture I took 2 years ago almost to the day. I took it in a much larger size and used Paint to shrink it down to 15% today. Even at the smaller size you can kind of make out flies on some of my daisies. I tried posting it at 20% of the original size which fills most of my monitor but it was still too big for the forum.

Unless you have Leica M series cameras/lenses, no.  Some rare cameras still fetch a decent price, but most of the common models can be had pretty reasonably.  If you're looking to sell, I would suggest contacting KEH in Georgia first.  They are the biggest used camera dealers in the country.

Besides eBay, check with KEH.  They're the old standard in dealing with used cameras.

I'm wondering if we'll see a shift back to film? I remember when CD's came out in the early 80's, everyone thought vinyl LP's and turntables would go the way of the breaker point distributor and the carburetor. Now they're enjoying a comeback. And some stereo freaks actually prefer them to digital music media.

So Bill, what are you going to do?

For now I'm just going to try and educate myself about these things. Then for sure either before Christmas, ("Cyber Monday"), or else just after, I'll take the plunge. Melanie wants me to photograph my whole collection with updated information, serial numbers, prices, etc. So if anything happened to me she wouldn't be in the dark, and get taken advantage of. I don't even want to think about that until it cools off around here. I hate having to deal with stuff like that. But when you get in your 60's, and start seeing friends and relatives your age dying off, you can't help it. And you constantly read about women getting ripped off, when trying to sell their husbands gun collections.

I'm still leaning toward something along these lines. It will do most everything I would need a camera for. And if it, "triggers something" that gets me going, I can always get something better down the road.

Get good protective filters.  Cheap ones will noticibly degrade image quality.

We have a set of Filters for all 6 of her lenses for her two Nikon Bodies. Very useful but starts to run into money. Ex. Her super Sized Zoom Telephoto (Sigma for Nikon 50-500 "Big Ma") the set of Tiffin filters was like $139 ON Sale!!! And I remember buying those on Photo row but I don't think at Adorama although that where we Bought her first Package...
Also if your going to do any speciality photography of any kind, check out a Lensbaby package of some kind if your going to get or have any DSLR. My wife finally started using hers after 8 years( of course she  wants to update it now. I never get any credit for good ifeas[emoji12]

Bill, that is very similar to the Nikon bundled package I bought several years ago (looks to be the next newer model camera body, ours is a D3200).
I love ours, the bundle had everything from the lenses and filters to a hot shoe flash unit, extra cards, tri-pod, and remote. I may add additional lenses, but for the pictures we take, I don't see going beyond this camera unless it is damaged or destroyed or lost.
Great deal, IMHO, FWIW

The Nikon "3" series is a good Starter-to advanced beginner" package. The "5" series is a little more of an intermediate package. The "7" series is "Prosumer" last year my wife And I felt she needed a new body since her D-90 was from 2008. Walked into Costco dreading getting online on the computer and spending another 3500-5K (Thankfully she has all but one of the lenses she wants) and there is one of the new bodies (Albeit the low end one) she wanted-the Nikon D7200 with two kit lenses she did not need( we sold the 18-55 and kept the 55-300). Now at least she has two Bodies and both fit all her lenses

You are going to have to make it plain to me what's so good here.  Fewer mirrors for better clarity?  Faster processing?

Also, my wife is a Canon person...do they have anything comparable?

Yes the Z6 I have been reading about. My wife has an older D-90(2008) and a newer D-7300(2014-15) and both use the same lenses. She does our “Semi-Pro” photography with those and with extended lenses on her iPhone. I have her old CoolPix 6200 pocket APS and the current Gen J1 mirrorless(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180817/9cef95121735554a39d9b39d780d0ae5.jpg)

It's...it's...it's a Nikon!  Seriously, though, it has a larger sensor than my current camera, which can mean much better low light performance and overall image quality.

Mirrorless cameras don't need to make room for a mirror, so the body can be much thinner than an SLR (single lens reflex) camera.  An added benefit is that adapters can be made that will allow you to mount just about any SLR lens and it will work.  The adapter just needs to be the correct depth to allow the adapted lens to focus properly.  Some will even autofocus.

Also, notice how huge the lens mount is?  That is going to allow much better light transmission to the sensor.

I will not be able to afford one, but I can dream, yes?

I believe Canon is working on a mirrorless camera with a similar sensor size.  They already have a mirrorless system with a smaller sensor.

P.S.  The mirror in an SLR is not involved in the picture taking process, just in framing the shot and focussing.  It flips up out of the way when the shutter button is pressed, which is why the viewfinder blacks out during the exposure.

Thanks for the education Brian.  I really didn't know.  All of that makes perfect sense now.

A larger sensor is a good thing for resolution too I suppose.  And I had no idea the mirror swings up in an SLR...gee..what a dummy.

Resolution is just a small piece of the equation (mostly marketing).

We aren't born knowing these things.

But SLRs allow you to see the shot in natural definition through the lens directly into your eye.   You can tell pretty precisely how the picture is going to turn out, exposure, focus and contrast-wise.   To quote Nikon:

With Nikon’s optical viewfinders, you see what the lens sees—without any delay and in real time.

Without SLR, then you're viewing the shot on a tiny LCD screen (~900kpixels).

Of course then some of the greatest shots have been, guess at the settings, point and shoot, e.g., Iwo Jima flag.

SLRs don't show exposure, and most don't show you 100% of the final image.  Mirrorless cameras show you exactly what is going to be in the image, as it is showing directly what the image sensor will record.  Focus is also more accurate with a mirrorless, but focus is faster on SOME SLRs.

Brian, you're certainly way levels above me, so I bow to your knowledge.

Having worked with video cameras I found most operators cannot do a good focus on even a 7" LCD viewfinder.  The director had to guide them sometimes since she was viewing on a 40" monitor.  I can't image than I could focus better with a 3.2" LCD than with the direct viewing of the mirror.   But then again my film and digital SLRs are the bottom of the Nikon line, not something top end like these.

I should have specified "autofocus" when I was speaking of focus systems.  I can't see well enough to manually focus any of them.

Since it's a camera thread I thought it would be a good place to post a picture. I use Bing desktop to change my desktop picture every day, then exit the program because I don't use Bing for anything else. Out of the 4 new pictures and 8 old ones it offered me Wednesday I picked the maned wolf.

It looks like the face of a fox, on the body of a wolf, with long legs like a deer. But they aren't dogs, wolves, coyotes, foxes, jackals, or dingoes. It's the only species in the genus Chrysocyon and it's not closely related to any other animal. The average adult weighs 51 pounds, stands 35 inches tall at the shoulder, has a head-body length of 39 inches, with an 18 inch tail, and it's ears are 7 inches long! Besides all its other unusual features, it has a black mane that can make stand up. I finally figured out how to save a picture of it and nothing else on my desktop. I used Paint to save it as a jpg and shrunk it down to 77% to get it under the 300k limit.

P.S. Every time I look at it I think its legs are a foot too long. It looks so weird that it looks like the picture has been altered.

Still love that little Olympus camera!  It's small enough to not be noticed or confiscated at the gate, but good enough to take shots like this from the nose-bleed section of Heinz Field.  Daughter's out there with the band.

So Brian, did Canon come out with a "mirrorless" camera like the Nikon?

They just came out with the EOS R, which competes with the new Nikon Z series cameras, but they've had crop sensor (smaller than the size of a 35mm frame) mirrorless cameras for a few years now.  https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/cameras/eos-dslr-and-mirrorless-interchangeable-lens-cameras?cm_sp=Category-_-EOSM_Top_Position2-_-Cameras_Cameras_cameras/eos-dslr-and-mirrorless-interchangeable-lens-camera#facet:-1510177105114114111114108101115115&productBeginIndex:0&orderBy:&pageView:grid&pageSize:& (https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/cameras/eos-dslr-and-mirrorless-interchangeable-lens-cameras?cm_sp=Category-_-EOSM_Top_Position2-_-Cameras_Cameras_cameras/eos-dslr-and-mirrorless-interchangeable-lens-camera#facet:-1510177105114114111114108101115115&productBeginIndex:0&orderBy:&pageView:grid&pageSize:&)

Topic resurrection:

This is my current EDC (Every Day Camera):

It is a Nikon One V3 I bought refurbished last year.  It hasn't been made for 4 or 5 years, but is a fantastic little camera.  It is a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses.  Take the viewfinder off the top and the grip off the bottom and it's downright tiny.  It is fast, too!  There's a setting that allows it to take 60 pictures a second.

This is my barbecue camera:

This is a Panasonic LX100.  Isn't it pretty?  I sold a bunch of cameras I haven't been using to get it.  Fixed lens and large sensor compact.

I recently got back into film photography, so I got one of these:

This is an Olympus OM-4T.  One of the coolest 35mm cameras ever made!  The "T" is for "Titanium".  I also started developing black and white film again and scanning the negatives.  Film is expensive these days.
