Title: Windows 10
Post by: tombogan03884 on September 16, 2015, 02:34:03 PM
Is windows 10 any better than  8.1?

From what I heard it's full of spyware and other crap you don't want but if you know what you're doing you can turn off a lot of it. I plan on keeping what I have and not updating to Windows 10. I also heard you have to pay for apps for things that should be free like realtek audio.

Hi;

Not a 'puter geek here , but from reading others comments in other forums most like it as it is far better than win 8.  Those who question or complain about Win 10 are not too 'puter savey like me and need the help of others to disable, disarm - do away with some of the apps in win 10.

A few comments were that when "they" put Win 10 together - they loaded it up with "extra" stuff thinking everyone would appreciate it all.

"they" did not think of us non savey and leary of Big Brother types. also people like me that barely know what they can/are doing with a 'puter.

They're giving it away to some of us with Win 7 or 8.

Took a look and decided against it.  Took me a few weeks to rid myself of the "auto upgrade" shit they put on my system.

I'm done with Microsoft.  Won't buy another...

I picked up a year old used iPad for 50 bucks from a friend of my kid.  I usemy Windows laptop less these days.

Another thing I don't like can be disabled but shouldn't be there in the first place. It's set to use file sharing and your bandwidth to update other people's computers.

I'll stick with W8 I'm  like Dipisc, I know point, click, and type and don't want to be bothered with having to turn off a lot of crap I don't even know is there.

I recently advised a "customer" (I guess parishioner would be more accurate) to not upgrade his existing computer.   He thought that I, being a technology guru, would always want the latest and greatest.

What I advised him was that Win 10 isn't an upgrade but a new product.   That Win 7/8 will be supported for the time being.  And unless there just was some feature of Win10 he couldn't live without there was no reason to upgrade.   No reason to live through the hassles, bugs and learning curve of a new product.  By the time he replaces his existing computer we'll have moved on to Win11 or 12.

The older your computer the less likely you will be pleased with an early release of Win 10.

Drivers for older components might not yet be available for Win 10.

It is the responsibility of the device manufacture to provide the driver to make it work with Win 10, and they will do so based on how many of a particular device model they expect to sell soon.  Older, outdated devices will be at the bottom of the list..some not on it  at all.

Waiting for a future release will improve the odds that the drivers you need will be available.  It will also give the real Gurus a chance to document how to overcome, hopefully, all the crap that is "built-in"

Where I do my day job we stuck with XP until we just couldn't anymore. We are now with Windows 7, as 8 is maddening. We do not intend to go to 10 either. We have ironed out about 70% of the bugs, but some we may never fix and are just learning new ways to do some things.

Occasionally on Facebook I'll see something about Bill Gates. Usually it's the picture of him holding a sign with that bogus "Share this and I'll send you $5,000".  Anyway, I NEVER miss a chance no matter what the post, even if it' about Gates' philanthropic activities....I always comment with something like, "Why don't you spend some of that obscene amount of money you have fixing your shitty software"?.

Just a little thing I do.

I like windows 7.   8 and 8.1 were a joke.    I would run xp if I could.

I had XP and found an app that made the desktop look more like Vista. It worked well for me. Then I got Vista and it also worked well for me, and I liked how it looked. Now I have Windows 7 and hope it continues to work until something newer than Windows 10 comes out. If my computer didn't self-destruct I'd still have XP and be happy with it.

I did it... About two weeks ago.. Crashed the first time today..
It has pages it doesn't like, like Rush's home page, today.. First one that actually crashed it, but while I don't visit "lib" pages, per se, it seems to not like the more overtly conservative pages..
I went ahead and did it because The Blaze news site choked my machine to the point that it just wouldn't run with it open.. Not sure if there was any logic to that. Just "Seemed like the thing to do at the time"...
Learning to regret it..
I did disarm the tracking crap that was available to unplug, without making a paperweight, but Google tracks you and won't let you access much of anything if you don't consent..
Love/hate these things..

A few weeks ago I had a few hours of windshield time, and the wheels between my ears were turning.  What kind of consumer have we become when we get excited when vendors make their products, that we pay money for, obsolete on a regular basis.  It used to be that we purchased items to make our lives easier, and they did.  All this electronic gadgetry takes more time.  My smartphone, that I didn't really want, but my bride got a package deal on, is constantly updating and adding things on its own.  When I log into the internet my computer goes into hyper slow mode while it shares info with every site there is.  I go to a website, and they have ads for every item I have searched for over the last 30 days.

What amazes me most about this is the number of people who praise this and look forward to the next update.  I am not against technology and improvements, but this has gotten out of hand.

Your computer stuff is obsolete before it ever gets to the market due to advances in the technology.
Watch the tech news, advances in speed and capacity come much faster than designers ad manufacturers are capable of keeping pace with.

If your computer is running slow, or even if it's not, you can download the free version of CCleaner (formerly CrapCleaner) for your computer. I run it every day to clean up temporary files, history, cookies, etc. then I use it to clean up the registry. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner It's the #1 tool for cleaning up #2.

I have also found MalwareBytes to be very helpful. I am the I.T. person for a legal firm and we use both on a regular basis here. (Yes feel sorry for me around all of these liberal lawyers)

https://www.malwarebytes.org/   For home try the free version. It is very good.

I bought Malwarebytes anti-malware after I got the FBI Moneypak Virus on my PC. I didn't know how to deal with the virus at the time and re-formatted my computer. Then I bought Malwarebytes since it's supposed to be able to prevent or remove the virus. Since using Malwarebytes I haven't had any viruses. I'm also using the free version of Malwarebytes anti-exploit. If it wasn't for the icon in the system tray I wouldn't even know it's there. https://www.malwarebytes.org/antiexploit/

P.S. I have the anti-malware set to update once an hour and to scan once an hour. I don't know if the free version allows that but the scan doesn't slow anything down. I like it.

Just wondering if you guys have any updates to Windows 10.  It's been several months now and I'd like to know if all of the spy stuff has been, more or less, found with a method to disable.

You might want to check out

http://classicshell.net/

I use this a LOT. It is a shell that is free for personal use that gives to the same look and feel of Windows 7 or XP when running later versions of Windows. I have used it on 8 and 10. It is small, does not slow down the computer, and will load automaticly once installed. It has solved a LOT of my issues with Windows 10.

That should tell you everything you need to know right there. I get pop ups for it most every day. I close them out as fast as they come up.

So would I. It was the best version of Windows ever.

Careful, they can install an annoying start up tray icon.  Took me a month to rid my system of it...

I have Windows 7 and do Windows updates every day. When there was a Windows 10 update for me I hid it and have never had a Windows 10 popup. No start tray icon for it either. I'm waiting to see if Windows 11 or 12 is any good. Hopefully my PC will last that long.

The popup gets initialized each time Win 7 is started and often after it is running.

You can use Task Manager to end task GWX...but it will restart with the next boot and often while the computer is still running.

Here is a link to uninstall the update that started the whole thing.  Hide the update after wards or manually check the updates and don't let it get installed again

I just checked my hidden updates. I thought Windows 10 was in there but it's not. It was an optional update that I declined somehow. I just don't know how. I think it showed up on my task bar once but I never saw a trace of it since.

I just stopped all automatic updates and downloads..... I have it check manually and then pick what I want it to do.

Well, my opinion is that I don't get anything for 10 and that Microsoft and data hogs get more info on me.

If you don't want Windows 10 to install itself on a Windows 7 or 8.1 computer download this file at Never10 and click on the "Disable Win10 Upgrade" button. That's all there is to it and you don't have to install any new software or anything like that. If you decide you do want Widows 10 you do the same thing with the "Enable Win10 Upgrade" button. https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

Okay found it.  Download and run one time.  Makes all those upgrade messages go away.

This utility comes highly recommended from a software engineer friend of mine.  (One of the original Hayes Modem engineers, btw.)   I've used it on this home computer and intend to install it at work on my Win 7 Pro there.   I trust JC.  He's a shooter and a ham op.

A couple weeks ago my computer, on its own, upgraded me  >:(  I have always clicked not to upgrade, because this is a six year old machine with its own glitches, and I don't want a bunch of compatibility issues.  So far no compatibility issues, but I need to learn all new ways to do things I have done for years, scanning was an adventure in vocabulary for anyone within earshot the other night, and Cortana, I don't want to ask you a damn thing!

I go back to my post early in this thread:  Why are people so damn excited about technology that does what it wants on its own whether we want it or not?
