Title: concealed carry gun
Post by: Pababear on April 16, 2014, 04:50:42 PM
Since having just one hand, I'm interested a ccw gun.  I've got an old Taurus model 94 .22, that I can fill nine chambers with .22 quikshot ammo.

The other option is for a snub nose .38, and the arm doesn't like a hot load with a scandium frame.

The Beretta .32 Tom Cat is my favorite of the three.  But I have heard good and bad about them.

The 22 with a high speed segmenting ammo in  revolver that I've shot for years, seems to be the best for me, 9 rounds versus 5.  But, the .32 is tempting, a gun that I can manage until I get a fail to fire, or jam.

That's a tough one.I'd think a revolver with standard 38 special loads, but then again what are you using it for?For range use and just plinking the .32 with a tip up barrel would work sinch you won't have to rack the slide. How are you with loading a mag? Again , I think a revolver would be easier to operate, either a .32 or .38.

I could load a mag. in a pinch, buy I've been searching for a .32 revolver, none that I could find that had six shots.

if you stay with the .22lr wheel gun put some better high velocity ammo in it... a .38spl with the older Federal NyClad 125grain bullets is very soft shooting even in my aluminum frame SW442.... if you live in a climate without heavy winter clothing needed, may be a solution... a very soft shooting, concealable (slightly bulky grip), and very accurate... Beretta 21S in .22lr

They used to make six-shot .32s like this that you may find suitable http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=410293970 or this http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=410333786

Ruger LCR in .22 lr is 8 shots...

Ruger LCR in .22 WinMag is 6 shots...

Neither would I care to have pointed at me and the trigger in my .38 is the best DA trigger I've felt without serious tweaking!

Probably can find some loaders for them as well...

http://ruger.com/products/lcr/models.html

Maybe they'll chamber one in .327 Magnum soon...  I'd buy one!  (hint, hint, Ruger!!!)

Hornady makes a low recoil loading for .38 special in the Critical Defense lineup of ammo.

A couple thoughts, the Tomcat has a tip-up barrel making it easier to chamber or clear,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beretta_3032_Tomcat

second, the .327 federal fires any rimmed .32 cartridge allowing you to tailor your load to exactly what you can handle .

That was my thought also about a .32 revolver. You can shoot .327 Federal Magnum, .32 H&R Magnum, .32 S&W Long, or .32 S&W.

Have a question.

Is your choice of smaller calibers due to the increased round count or also because of your hand being weak?

If it is just for the increased round count they do make accessories to facilitate one handed  manipulation of a Glock slide.

Round count will be high and of a larger caliber.

Magazine changes can be made one handed when the slide is held open with a few techniques for holding the gun under an arm or the bend of a knee or other ways after the spent magazine has been released.

Then the slide can be operated to load a round from the fresh magazine using this Charging Handle and your belt or edge of a pocket or a handy hard surface to release the slide.

Don't know if any of this is a workable option for you, but it is something to consider if it can be made to work.

Take care and good luck

I would look at Charter Arms pitbull revolver in .40 smith and Wesson or there .44 special.  shot both last week impressed me.

PabaBear,

Sorry for coming in so late.  I agree with Solus' comments.

Without more information it is hard for me to give you a 100% answer, but a couple things to consider are that a semi-automatic reduces the felt recoil through the action; even though we teach that misfires and jambs can be easier to handle in a revolver, for a person with limited hand use a semi-automatic can actually be the easier tool, and the increased magazine capacity of a semi-automatic can cut down on the number of reloads needed.

I hope these sketchy ramblings help.

Have I told you how much I missed you guys?

I bet you could do THAT with hand signals, too.  :o

To all, I've medium sized hands or rather the use of only my left hand, with short fingers.  Thus the need to clear jams easily.  The j frame revolvers in 38, are too much for the hand to take at practice.

I've shot 9mm Glocks and Lugers, but I have to have my friend rack the slide and clear any issues that arise.

I prefer the .380 Walther PPK, same problem.

That is why I mentioned the Tom cat.  I was going to mix ball and hollow point in the magazine.  First two hp, the rest ball.

Check out the Beretta Model 86 ( I think they're still available) - bigger than the Tomcat and therefore MUCH easier to operate and it can't be a worse trigger than the Tomcat....because there isn't one!

If you are looking for a .380, you might want to consider the Glock 42

http://us.glock.com/products/model/g42

With this adapter, you can rack the slide one handed using your belt or pocket.  Might even be able to use your left thumb to set slide lock.

Take care.

I can't use it at the pistol club where I would shoot, or else I would use my belt as my police officer  friend (ret.) showed me.

Glock said to contact "Red Jacket" in Louisiana to modify it.  Never heard from Red Jacket, that would be a last choice.

Beretta model 86 is ideal, I have been looking for one for years.  I still would prefer a glock, or Ruger if I had two hands.

BTW, police in town now have switched to .45.

Ahh...don't know what the rules are at your range, but if it requires the muzzle to be pointed downrange and that is the reason the Glock doesn't cut it, maybe a lanyard around your neck with a hook or loop on the end might let you work the slide and keep it pointing down range.

Check out this rear sight for the Glock.  I have seen it in person, and I have heard good things about it.  My gunsmith has one for my new Glock, but now his widow needs to help me find it ... I think I'll just order a new one and find another gunsmith to put it in for me.

Yes, that's the one my friend has on his Glock.  I wish the club would allow it, but as of now, I have to shoot wheel guns, 22LR.

Still better than nothing!

I have a Glock sight pusher if you want to use it.
