Title: MK IV with open sights for Steel Challenge
Post by: les snyder on October 16, 2022, 08:53:11 AM
I'm a gun game player at heart, and haven't shot a fixed sighted pistol in serious competition in about 4 years now... the range I shoot at most of the time does a Rimfire Challenge match with pistol (first) and then rifle on the same stage one match a month... I typically use optics on both guns (red/green Holosun 510c) but I want to work with the fixed sight pistol for actual Steel Challenge matches for a while...

so... I stuck a fiber optic front sight on the MKIV as well as a shortened barrel for the rifle... and now I find that I'm faced with the fact that I don't know how to shoot a fiber optic front sight... I shot fixed black sight for 35+ years for USPSA, and don't get a consistent elevation hold with as fast a sight picture that I want... when shooting the FO as I find it hard to be consistent with how I locate the dot with the rear notch....

so got my bottle of Testor's Fluorescent Pink out and put a dab on the fixed front sight... I don't have the problem with the rifle as I used a carry handle rear sight for the AR with aperture sight (that I've opened to .156"_...wish me luck...sighting it in today... Les

You have problem with a FO front sight but a fluorescent pink is better?

I’m no where near the competitor you are but I love my FO sights over blacked ones.  I can concentrate on that shiny FO so much better than plain ones.

Alf... not so much the color, but the shape of the top of the front sight... I can hold elevation much better with a flat top... regards... sighted it in this morning, will shoot a match Friday and give some feed back... regards Les

+1 for Alf... immediately replaced the painted front sight for the fiber optic... opened up and deepened the rear sight notch...though I think I'll concentrate on the Optics pistol... a little 11 year old girl shoots in the Irons division and well you know the outcome  ;D... regards Les

Never compete with kids if it involves vision, fine motor skills, coarse motor skills, fast movement or slow movement.

I'm just sayin'....

you would think that after 40 or so years of gun games, you would have the cognitive ability to seat the magazine in a pistol, but noooo.... anyway, shot well enough to get a B card in both RFPI and RFPO with the MK IV... I haven't shot the AR9 PCC since Covid, so stuck the spare 510 on it and will give it a try... some of the primers I loaned out are being replaced so will see if I can remember how to pull the handle on the S1050...ordered a couple of short 4-40 flathead cap screws and will stick the 507 on the G17 slide that was cut for the RMR (same footprint)and possibly give Carry Optics a try.... a Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas, and wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year to all... regards Les

Les, just when a person starts getting good at something....old age slaps them down.

I bought three torso steel silhouettes a month and a half ago....still not up.  You are doing much better than I am!

Rastus... Steel Challenge  has been a haven for old guys that still like to pull the trigger.... on matches that save for one stage do not require movement under time... I'm finally figuring out the best sequence order for me to engage the targets

Assuming the stop plate is in the middle, I just do 1, 2, 5,4,3.  Of course doesn’t work on some but for most of them just makes life simpler.  Then again I’ll probably only ever make B while you’ll end up GM.

Alf... I actually have more fun with the practice sessions and the guys that typically are on the squad... three of the steel challenge courses are set up, and you shoot it twice... no score keeping... no painting between shooters, and member price is $2... I may squeak into Master, but GM is not a goal...

since cataract surgery, I'm not in an immediate hurry to get into Carry Optics...I carry a fixed sight G43x... but I do have a G17 slide cut and will stick the Holosun 507 on it as it is brighter than the Trijicon... the price of rim fire ammo is coming down, but I don't think small pistol primers will ever get back to $.03 again... at 6 matches and about 1200 rounds a month, it is still cheap enough for me to shoot....regards

Cataract surgery made all the difference for me, not just in clearness of vision but in that I am now 20/20 without external lenses.  This allow me to more easily experiment with various glasses.  And For the first time ever Red Dots are actually dots since my astigmatism is corrected at the eye not by external lenses.   But I’m a Luddite and will continue to shoot iron sights.

Our club has done similar.  2 stages each month, $5 for the day.  You just get in in line, like at a playground, and shoot until the SOs pack it in.

Yesterday, in true holiday fashion, I had to take a delivery route.  For the first time ever they sent a warehouse worker along to assist me.  The embarrassing moment came as I climbed down out of the back of the trailer.  As usual I knelt down to lower my foot to the bumper and step down.  That damn piece of titanium they put in does not like being knelt on, and as I made a quick move I found myself being aided gently by my helper.

DAMN, I felt old  :'(
