It was 17 degrees when I rolled in at midnight last night. 9 hours earlier in Baton Rouge I left in the mid 50's. 22 degrees right now...methinks I came home a couple of months too soon.
Global warming.....BRING IT ON!

Saturday through Monday it's supposed to get down below zero at night in my part of Michigan. The good news is that it's unlikely to snow the rest of this week and all of next week.

We've gotten into the high 30's before dawn here the last few days. By noon it's up in the mid 70's, so it isn't too bad.

The global warming gang are all in titters because they predicted lessening snowfalls.
I'm at Amelia Island for the week. Not great beach weather, 50s with strong northerly winds. But it beats sub freezing back home.
Maybe next year I'll do Key West instead on N FL.

24 right now, just waiting on the liquid rock truck, 200 degree water and exlerator, might be able too finish it at 4 pm lol, then underneath the burlap and steam blankets,pumping in steam all night. Might be hard enough too build on in 2 months.

All the snow we had 2 weeks ago melted except where it was piled up. After that I let it pile up for a few days and had a white Christmas. About 5 inches of nothing but powder was on my truck when I finally swept it off Tuesday. No ice or fogged up windows either. I got lucky. The Weather Channel at weather.com says there's a 40% chance of snow tonight but I don't think we'll get any. The forecast goes all the way up to January 11th with 10% or 20% chance of snow every day except the 7th is 30%. It looks like it's going to stay below freezing that whole time.

Lows next week here in south GA are predicted to be in the mid 20's all week....possibility of a couple inches of snow around Wednesday. There won't be a roll of toilet paper or a bottle of wine in a walmart anywhere. ;D
The last snowfall that was heavy enough to stick was in January of 2010 (I remember the wife had no hair from chemo).

I'll get my revenge when it's 75 degrees and 30% humidity here and some of you guys have 100 degrees (but it's a dry heat ;)) or 90 degrees with 100% humidity. It's a price I'm willing to pay for having all 4 seasons in a year, and 3 of them aren't bad. I once had a neighbor who had it all worked out. He and his wife lived in Michigan from mid-spring until mid-fall, and around Brownsville, TX from mid-fall to mid-spring. No snow or sweltering heat to deal with. But I can only afford one house so I'm not going anywhere.

It's 15 degrees right now and the forecast has changed a little. There was what looks like a fraction of an inch of snow from in the house, and a 30% chance of more tonight.

Yeah, that's too cold even for me. A high of 10 below there tomorrow and 11 above here, which is 20 degrees colder than average. It should barely be freezing here and only a little lower where Mike is. The wind chill tonight is supposed to be 10-15 below for me and 25-45 below for him. What the h***? :o
ETA: We had about another 1/4" of snow that was I think was a 10 or 20% chance to fall. The total for 3 days looks like slightly more than an inch.

It's above zero here and should stay that way until Wednesday night. We'll have a few below zero nights then back above zero, night and day, for the next 9 days. All the snow melted off of my truck except between the windshield and hood. There's a windchill advisory tonight and tomorrow morning but not as bad as in Minnesota. You'll be able to get frostbite in as little as 30 minutes here, but only 10 minutes there. There's also a local pollen alert here, especially for ragweed, which sounds quite odd. I don't know how pollen can be a problem when the ground is covered with snow.

For all of those who hated on me while I vacationed with my lovely wife and new bride in Oahu (I'm looking at you, Kenny!), we did return last night to 17 above. This morning it was 3 above here in Lexington, with minus 8 for wind chill.
My son's car, parked in our sloping driveway, won't start so he spent the night with us. Seems he left it nose down on the driveway with less than 1/8 tank of gas, and we have been below freezing since Christmas day. Seems the 5 years he lived at Pendleton in SoCal caused him to forget to keep the tank filled when cold is predicted.
Oh, and it snowed here last night too.

It was 2 degrees when I got up around 8 AM. But....NO SNOW!!! We're good and dry around here.

23° in south GA this AM with wind chill making it feel like in the teens.....pretty much the same for the next few days.
We need the cold to help the pecan and peach trees because we haven't had enough chill hours the last few years.....but, it surely makes Ol' Peg ache when it gets this cold.

Wednesday there was just enough snow to know that some fell. The top of my truck was still mostly visible with white polka dots of snow. It didn't take long for that to disappear, and Thursday was even better. I haven't checked the weather but the last forecast I saw for the weekend didn't look good.

It's only 4 degrees right now but it didn't feel nearly that cold when I went out to get my mail. There's a wind chill advisory until noon Saturday but it will take at least 1/2 hour to get frostbite. Then we'll have a heatwave. 8) It's supposed to get up to the 40s next week and the week after. It might rain Thursday starting at midnight Wednesday night. I don't especially like rain but at least I won't have to shovel it.

I don't believe I've shaved in 2 or 3 years but haven't been keeping track. I sometimes get my beard trimmed when I get a haircut, but almost always let it grow out in the winter. This is the first winter I recall having short hair in a long time. There's no neck warmer growing on the back of my head this year. I had long hair in the winter and short hair in the summer for a long time, then went a couple of summers without a buzz cut. For the past year I've kept it short year round. It's easier to keep it one length all year and short hair is the easiest. I only need a fraction of the shampoo I used when it was longer, so that's a plus. I look at my hair in the mirror when I get up and think yeah, that's good enough. All I have to do is comb out my beard or it gets a couple of weird curls in it. I can't remember the last time I had ice in my beard.

Well fella's, I work outside. Regardless the weather. 12 below and windchills near 30 below when I started earlier this week. I was good to go though, dressed in 5 inches of clothes. Did great till I had to pee. It's only 4 inches long. :-\

I had the same problem when I was snowmobiling but it was more like 1 inch long. :-[ Any shorter and it would have been an inny instead of an outty.

That wouldn't be a bad idea if I still stayed out in that kind of cold. Better than grabbing hold with an ice cold hand and getting a chilly willy. One winter when I was riding up in the U.P. it was so cold my balls retracted to a nice warm place and I didn't see them again until the spring thaw.

OK to change the subject slightly...I have an East Indian MD that suggested using a Neti pot for nasal lavage to alleviate a post nasal drip from pollen this summer...I've continued using the warm salt water nasal lavage daily, and has really helped me during the chill we are having down here... I know it is nothing like the temps you have, but my house is heated only with heat pump, and I don't use a humidifier, so I really dry out... you might give it a try... it only feels like you are being waterboarded the first time or so

I've heard a lot of good with the Neti pots. Also some bad as a bacteria bed....after you clean it soak a little vinegar in it to kill off the bad boys. We used vinegar in the boys breathing treatment equipment as a necessity and also in the sleep apnea machine. Also put a boiling pot of water to keep the humidity up...it was so dry up here in Oklahoma compared to S. Louisiana where I was from I kept a nose bleed for a while until I did that. Wife drops some cinnamon, or other sweet smelling stuff in it to add to it's use.

It's a long way down. I used to like looking down through the grate when I was a kid. Driving on it seems to make the wheels wander a bit, and that's on 4 wheels. I was driving a full-size van across the bridge one winter and was blown sideways into the next lane. 5 minutes later the bridge was closed, I think until some time the next day. There were 64 million safe crossings and then along came a woman in her Yugo. She was out of control.

In that link I posted on the Mackinac Bridge the Chicago Tribune mentions, "The 3,800-foot suspension bridge", but it you check the stats at the bottom it's much, much longer. It's 26,372 feet, or 4.995 miles long. That's almost exactly 2 car lengths short of 5 miles long, depending on which cars. The center span alone is 3,800 feet. It's designed to be stable in winds up to 150 MPH, but it's bad enough crossing when it's windy enough to lower the speed limit from 45 MPH to 20.
My dad went across it when it first opened in 1957. They didn't even have the lighting installed and may not have been done painting, but they opened it up for deer season, which should be a state holiday considering how many people take it off or want to. Before the bridge was built they had ferry service, weather permitting, with traffic sometimes backed up for miles and miles.
Wikipedia says on September 10, 1978, a small private plane carrying United States Marine Corps Reserve officers Maj. Virgil Osborne, Capt. James Robbins, and Capt. Wayne W. Wisbrock smashed into one of the bridge's suspension cables while flying in a heavy fog. The impact tore the wings off the plane, which then plunged into the Straits of Mackinac. All three men were killed. And on March 2, 1997, Richard Alan Daraban drove a 1996 Ford Bronco over the edge. It was later determined to be a suicide. That was the second car to go off the bridge but I don't remember it or the plane crash. But it's hard to forget the story of the pilot who flew a B-47 jet bomber UNDER the bridge.

That makes it the third longest suspension bridge in the world as of 2016. I looked several places online to see what the longest suspension bridges in the world were, and nearly all of them went by the center span only, which is a only a fraction of the suspension or of the total length. Some included cable-stayed bridges (which all have shorter center spans), and even a causeway on the list. They placed the Big Mac as 10th, 12th, 20th, 38th, etc., longest suspension bridge in the world. 8) I never heard of the place until I read about him and his stunt. When I was in the army they asked me where I wanted to be stationed for CONUS and overseas. I chose Colorado and Alaska. So they sent me to Louisiana and Germany. ??? Oh well, you can't have everything you want, and sometimes you can't have anything you want. :(

Today is a lot warmer than it has been lately. I went out to get my mail, swept off what little snow was on my truck and ATV, put the cover the rest of the way back on my ATV, and shoveled a bit of snow off the back steps. I did it all with no gloves on, and my hands didn't even get cold, except the moments they were in direct contact with slush, and even that didn't really feel cold.
The thermometer in my truck said 39 degrees then 40, which means the actual temperature was probably about 38 degrees. The temps will be in the 30s Tuesday, 40s Wednesday, and then 50s Thursday. The roller-coaster temps will go down, up, and down again in the next 2 weeks. Whee!!! What a ride.
P.S. I had to turn the heat down to 68 today because it was too warm, which seems kind of odd. Lately 72 degrees has felt really cold. The hot and cold goes through my walls and windows like I'm in a tent. If there's any insulation in my walls I haven't seen it.

Yep. I was in the 5th infantry division at Fort Polk from spring of 1980 until the end of 1981. It's about halfway up the western border of the state 25 miles from Texas. We called it camp swampy, among other things. It was used for jungle training for guys on their way to Vietnam. I was on North Fort until the very end when we moved to South Fort as I was processing out. North Fort was mostly deserted which wasn't a completely bad thing. There was hardly any brass there to give us a hard time.
Our barracks were built during WWII and condemned at the end of the Vietnam war, then reopened sometime before I got there. It was such a swampy area that the barracks were held 2 or 3 feet above ground on concrete pillars. That's the first time I ever saw buildings propped up like that. And never in my life have I had a fungal infection on any part of my body until I went there. Thanks Uncle Sam. >:( It was the worst hell on earth place I ever experienced and I don't ever want to go back, at any time of the year for any length of time. When I die I know I'm going to heaven because I've already been to Louisiana.

I forgot to post this and came back. At 11:00pm the TV news said it was 56 degrees. It may have been even warmer during the day, I don't know. It's funny looking outside in January and not seeing snow on the ground. Even where I kept sweeping it off my truck and letting it pile up all winter so far, the piles were gone, even on the side that's in the shade. When I checked the weather online it said 56 is the record high for the date, so we either matched or beat the record for as long as they've kept track of it. At the same time it was -6 west of us. I didn't pay much attention so I'm not sure if it was Minnesota or North Dakota. Whichever one it was, it was 62 degrees colder than here at the same latitude. I haven't even heard my furnace run all day except for when I first got up and turned it up 3 degrees. But since our weather usually comes from the west and north, the cold is headed our way. Tonight it's supposed to rain and then freeze and we'll have rain, snow, sleet, and freezing rain, with an accumulation of about an inch of snow and ice. It was nice while it lasted.

That picture reminds me of one winter when I went out the back door and walked to the front sidewalk to get the mail as I usually do. Halfway there I got whacked on the back of the head by a big, heavy icicle. I looked up and wasn't a single icicle hanging from the eaves. I looked at the front of the house and there were no icicles there either. Ditto the back of the house. I didn't see fallen icicles in the snow or broken pieces on the driveway either, except right at my feet. I didn't check the other side of the house but the facts were plain to see. The only icicle on my house stayed there until the exact moment I walked under it.

I forgot to add that was 7 years ago. 2011. I remind everyone who is bemoaning climate change that weather patterns come around in cycles. We've just had some milder one the past couple of years.

From a winter standpoint. Back 4-5 years ago we had ferocious drought and summer evening temps over 110 for a 1/2 hour after dark! I think I prefer the 110....
We're going back down to single digits Monday and Tuesday...something I'm not looking forward to.

You can keep the 110 degree heat to yourself. I'll take my chances with the attack of the killer icicles. I don't know why we were singled out. If the temperature outside is equal to room temperature in a building with functioning HVAC I'm happy. If it gets too cold out I can put more clothes on, but if it gets too hot out I can't take anything off. Have I mentioned getting arrested for creating a public nuisance? Clothing was not optional. :-[ It's down to -1 tonight and back up to the mid-40s next weekend.

In the Tampa/St. Pete area, we had black ice on the Veteran's Expressway, yesterday. Id resulted in a couple of accidents.
The weather station module beside my bed tells me inside/outside temperatures, humidity, barometric pressure, rain predictions, etc. Yesterday morning I learned it also has an "ice alert" function. Who knew?

My parents live up in Montana, 20 miles south of Canadia and 90 miles NW of Great Falls. They left home on December 23rd and drove to California to catch a cruise to Mexico the beginning of January. Rainy and 60'ish for the entirety of the cruise, which happened to be about the same as it was at my house (benefit of living on the West side of Oregon). They are on their way home now, it's been -20's to -40's according to my son-he lives about 50 miles east of mom and dad. BRRRrrrrr....

When it hits negative numbers here it's usually something like -3, not -20. I don't think it's ever been -40 anywhere near here in my lifetime. If the temperature displayed in my truck's rear-view mirror was right or even close to it we got up to the 50s Monday afternoon.
The record low for Michigan was -51 making it the 12th coldest state record. That was in 1934 and that was up north where it naturally gets colder. That's still a lot better than -80 in Alaska.
The record high for Michigan was 112 in 1936 making it the 31st hottest state record. I looked again and it's actually a tie between Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, and West Virginia and they were listed in alphabetical order. California alone was the hottest at 134 degrees.

As I was headed for bed last night, with most of the lights already off, I wondered what that light was shining in the window when I walked by. It was light from porch lights and street lights and whatever moon light there was, all reflecting off the snow so bright that it lit up the whole neighborhood. We had so many days without a speck of snow anywhere that I was used to looking out the window and not being able to see my ATV at all parked 20 feet away in the darkness. Now it was bright enough to read license plates.
I was surprised that it snowed at all. On the weekend I checked the weather for the next 2 weeks. There was 0-20% chance of snow most days with the highest being 40% on Wednesday of next week IIRC. So much for the 10 or 20% chance it was supposed to be. When I swept my truck off today it had a good 8" or a little more on it. The weatherman tonight said it was 9.7". But it varies in different parts of the city, and some of the snow on my truck melted and turned to ice. And now it's supposed to get colder but not that sub-zero cold, just 12 degrees, and it should be up to about 41 Wednesday.

For the next 2 weeks we're supposed to have highs around 20-35 every day and lows of about 10-25, except next Wednesday and Thursday night when it gets colder. All the snow I couldn't sweep off my truck melted yesterday and the majority of what was on the sidewalk melted. I still haven't shoveled my sidewalk or driveway this winter.

There is also a wet mist on everything. Worse some areas than others making the roads dangerous.
I had to go into work for several hours today and saw quite a few wrecks.

Beautiful bright blue sky today. Water running across the parking lot at the truck stop. I backed in, grabbed my gloves, hopped out and started to drop the trailer. By the time I had the landing gear down, pigtail disconnected, and was pulling the latch, my ears were cold, my hands were cold in the gloves, and my lack of jacket had it a very uncomfortable nippley situation. How the H can I feel so cold on such a warm day? Then as I was dropping the airbags and getting ready to pull away I looked down at the dash ... -2F! How much salt did they dump on that lot to make the water run like that?

I don't know whether I should to talk to them, or just use my ATV to plow a ton of snow right behind their car. I could plow even more snow from across the street if I wanted to. They wouldn't be able to go anywhere, and it would take them hours to dig their car out.

Talk to them. Record the conversation. Ask them if it is ok to pile snow on your neighbors driveway. If they say no, ask them to remove what they piled on yours. If they say yes, bury them in snow.

Couple of weeks back Bunny and I went to North Carolina to remind ourselves what winter feels like. Woke up a few mornings to temps in the mid-teens. Saw actual snow. Trees frosted up and looked beautiful there in the mountains. There's a lot to be said for having four actual, different seasons.
It even got kinda cold here in Florida for a few days. Temps in the high 30s and low 40s. They didn't stay there long, but it was a reminder of what cold might feel like if we actually got much of it.
Right now, we're at 82F and 70% humidity and it feels good. I'll have to remember this when it 95F and 95% humidity in August and the AC is running 24-7 to keep it tolerable inside.
No place is perfect except maybe that part of the country round San Diego, California. Year 'round average temp is 72F which is just about perfect. But then, it's California and on one can afford to live there with all the taxes or want to live there with all the stupid gun regulations.
I think, to do it right, you just need to have two places to call home. One would be comfortable in winter. One would be nice in summer. If someone would send me a large check, I could check it out for you guys and report back.

We need a "lodge" in two places, perhaps the Winter Lodge in FL. and the Summer Lodge in, say MI or WI??

Hawaii would be a nice place to visit if you can afford it, but I wouldn't want to live there. In an average year the high temperature gets up to 84 for a few months, and the low only gets down to 68. If it wasn't for the average of 225 days of rain each year the weather would be great. 19 days of rain per month would get me depressed enough to be suicidal.

71?!?!?! I thought it was a heatwave when it got up to a record high 61 degrees yesterday. It was still 55 when the 11:00 news came on last night, but it cooled off today. We had an inch of rain yesterday and between the heat and the rain, the snow went bye-bye. There's not a speck of snow anywhere in my yard or driveway. Nothing on the street or by the curb where the plow piled it up either. I think they plowed my street 2 or 3 times this winter. It's freezing right now, and headed down to 26 tonight. BRR! There's a river flood warning until 1:00 P.M. Friday. Yesterday some other counties were flooded so bad they were closing businesses and schools, and some people's houses looked like they were siting in a pond. One place had so much rainwater and broken ice in a river, it was hitting a new bridge that connects 2 sides of the city. It was still intact but I'm not sure if it still is today.

I'm glad we matched 1930's record high of 61° Tuesday, or 60° according to an online source, and not 2015's record low of -25°. I don't remember it ever getting that cold. Today is 38° and sunny, and it's going up tomorrow. It's supposed to get up to 55° next Tuesday then back down again. Up and down, up and down.

I feel for you. That really sucks, and anyone who hasn't tried sleeping in bone-chilling cold can't fully understand the experience. In basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ it was -17 the night we had our bivouac. The guys were all freezing our ***s off in pup tents, while the female soldiers (there were no women in the army ::)) were all in a GP medium with tent stoves blazing away (at both ends, I think). We didn't have any winter boots or much other winter clothing, and we had plain old non-arctic type sleeping bags. I wore all of my clothes including my boots inside my sleeping bag, and was still freezing. I don't really think I slept that night. Every time I started to nod off I had a fierce full body shiver that shook me wide awake. It wasn't a seizure but as close to one as you'd want to get.

We had another record high today, 59 degrees, beating the 86 year old record of 58 in 1932. It felt a lot better outside with no jacket than with one. The average for the date is 36 and the record low was -14, so 59 is really hot in comparison. Tomorrow is supposed to get up to 55, one degree less than the record, so still no complaints from me. Yet. I'll wear a jacket when I go out around sunset tomorrow. The bad news is March starts out with rain, possibly more than an inch, then maybe an inch of snow at night.

Wednesday was another record high, 60 degrees, beating the old record by 4 degrees. The record low for the date was -16. I don't know what year either of the old records occurred. It snowed yesterday, but almost all of it is gone. Last night's snow is completely melted off of my truck and the sidewalk is clear. The next 2 weeks are going to be mostly highs in the 40s and lows a little below freezing. All winter seems like it's been either colder or warmer than usual, and not many days were average.

March is coming in like the lion this year down in Georgia. High winds yesterday and hard rain last night in front of a cool front. More winds and a high of 70 today. This looks to be the first year in a while where we are getting the winds of March during the early part of the month instead of the latter. The last few it has been windy at the end of the month going into April.

Before we got our inch of snow the weatherman said that system was headed east to combine with another system to make things rather unpleasant. Today I read that it killed 5 people on the east coast. The next time I complain about the weather I'll try to remember how good we actually have it here.
P.S. There were times the last winter or 2 when I got a call from Texas and the temperature was about the same as here. And one day they had more snow in Florida that we did here.

Down here in Florida, today is the first day in the last 25 that we are not going to be over 80 degrees. We've had the warmest February in decades if not forever. We set all kinds of records.
That said, we should be getting some of Georgia's weather in the next few days. Supposed to drop to 49 tonight and only reach the low 70s tomorrow.

Timothy, my neighbor's flood insurance is $1000.00 a month, he has a small stream next to his land that has overflowed twice since 1972 and neither time did it reach his house. I lucked out because my house is about 15 feet higher than his and just misses the alleged flood plane. Flood insurance is a ponzi scheme that puts money into the governments pocket. If they wanted to fix it, They should make an insurance payout one time for places like Galveston island in Tx where some places have been rebuilt over 15 times from hurricanes that they know will destroy the building, Move inland where the threat of flooding is much less.

My last house was like yours, about 50 above the flood plane. Back then, federal flood coverage had my mortgage company required it, was only about 800 bucks annually.
John Stossell wrote something about this some years back after his beach front home got whacked twice. He sold the property because he couldn’t justify the taxpayer rebuilding his property.
Is it not limited to 250k per incident? That won’t rebuild a garage on the Cape!

. . . or walk over downed power lines, use generators indoors, etc. A lot of people don't know when they're facing danger, no matter how many times they're warned. If I'm not mistaken one of my uncles drove through some water after my aunt told him not to. It was too deep and their Volkswagen beetle started floating. He probably saw a truck drive through and thought he could make it too.

Not so much cold, but a weird snowstorm hit central Kentucky Sunday night and Monday morning. Thick, wet, heavy snow that toppled some trees, more than a few limbs, but luckily few power lines (most of ours, at least in this neighborhood are underground).
"They" predicted 2", maybe 4" at the most. We got 6-10"!!!

Yesterday's snow completely melted off of my sidewalk, and there's only a tiny little bit on my windshield wipers, maybe covering half of the length of them. It's barely snowing right now with less than an inch of accumulation expected by morning. I won't have to go anywhere until 2:00 PM and it's supposed to get up to 37 degrees, so it may be gone by then. I didn't have to shovel my sidewalk for several days and shouldn't have to for the next week and a half. After that, who knows? It may get cold and snow again.

I kept looking out the window at my truck and there was never enough snow to completely cover it last night. At 3:00 A.M. it looked like the snow was replaced by frost, but I can't be sure because it was dark. At 11:00 A.M. there was just a trace of snow at the bottom of the passenger side window (in the shade), and some on the hood and very bottom of the windshield. It was all gone within a couple of hours, and the concrete behind my truck was bare. I haven't shoveled or plowed it in a couple of years and thought it would be covered.

Boston always has problems cuz their streets are narrow paved buggy trails from 300 years ago. They’re canceling St Paddy’s day parades all over the metro area..too much piled up snow.

Around here they plow the main roads in a reasonable amount of time, but by the time they get to the side streets, the snow is either mostly gone, or packed so solid that a plow can't do anything with it. I think my street was plowed a couple of times this winter. Woodcroft Estates where richer, more powerful people live, just a few miles away, gets plowed first. They also have off duty police working security in their neighborhood, while it takes days to get police to show up anywhere else. It must be nice to have enough money to live in a house like this one. This isn't the biggest house in that neighborhood but I like the castle look.

Last week one of the local weathermen said you know you're in Michigan when it's 70 degrees one day and ice storms 3 days later. I think we've had 3 days in a row with snow, ice and freezing rain. I just sat in front of my computer all day today, except when I watched TV. I had no idea how bad it was until the 11:00 news came on and they said at one point 350,000 people in Michigan didn't have any power. There must have been a lot of trees down for that to happen. They said one landed right on a transformer and the wire burned the sidewalk. I hope they were smart enough not to go look at it until the power was turned off.
