Title: The Sig 556 rifle testing results
Post by: USSA-1 on January 08, 2009, 07:41:12 AM
Well, as some of you know, I've been beating on a Sig 556 rifle to see how it would hold up.  Here's the update.

To date, I've fired 1,500 rounds with no cleaning and no additional oil.  I've used every type of ammunition to include factory, foreign surplus, reloads, and Wolf ammo (both 55gr and 75gr.)  I've used various magazines during the testing to include standard Mil-spec 20's & 30's (with both green and magpul followers), HK mags, MagPul mags (both 20's & 30's), polymer Israeli Orlite mags, polymer Thermold mags, Beta-mags, and the new steel Fusil mags.

In 1,500 rounds I experienced 0 malfunctions and I never needed adjust the gas system.  The Sig simply performed superbly.

I give the Sig 556 the official USSA-1 seal of approval!  Although it's not the most ergonomic rifle on the market, if it appeals to you, buy it.  It will serve you well.

Thanks for the info , USSA-1.

I know a few people with the 556 that swear by it. IMO, I think they should have stuck with the 550 series looks, but to each his own. I'd probably own one of these rifles if I didn't invest all my money in a Noveske and a plethora of pmags!  ;)

Amen on the post, could not agree more - the 556 is my go-to rifle, at least until I get the 6.8 built. May still be the go-to what with the cost of 6.8 ammo.   ;D

Thank you! I guess I never "beat mine up" enough to like Wolf Ammo. I'm glad to know there is that potential after more "use".

I love mine, and with a simple NcStar optic and fore-grip, it has always been a great rifle.

Question: Did all those rounds leave those little "marks" where the rounds get extracted? I have the small little flecks on the frame, no big deal, I was just wondering...

Thanks again for the USSA-1 stamp of approval.

PS You can always post a dirty gun porn pic,...... 8)

Yep, the area just behind the ejection port is all scarred to hell with brass marks.

Quite normal for a Sig/AK style ejector.

I will get around to pics one of these days.  Maybe this weekend.

Accuracy?

Are you going to switch over to competing with it?

Kelly,

Funny you should ask.  I just put on a Titan comp.  I'm going to run it at speed and see how it handles.  The two-stage trigger might cause some problems, especially not having an over travel adjustment.  If it handles good on the up close stuff, I'll scope it and see what kind of accuracy I can get.

At your convenience, give me a call.  I got a couple of sponsor questions for you.
