Title: What .22lr Is On Your Wall?
Post by: MikeBjerum on November 27, 2017, 08:38:02 AM
Rastus' thread on his T Bolt got me thinking ... Damn I hate you Rastus!

I have read, wish I could remember who said it, that you can tell a gun guy by the quality of the .22 on his wall.

What is your .22lr, and what is your dream .22lr?

I have a few that stand out:

Nobel lever action:  My father's gun;
A Stevens single shot bolt action: My father-in-law's gun;
A Ruger 10/22:  Doesn't everyone have a truck gun;
A Henry Golden Boy:  Cowboy and plinking fun;
A Savage Mark II:  Climbing the ladder of quality for Small bore competition and games

My dream gun, right now, is to get into an Anschutz.  However, that is more gun than I can fully use at this time.

It's never hanging on the wall but I've had a Ruger 10/22 for close to 40 years that came with real a walnut stock. I put a Butler creek folding stock and a Smith Enterprises slip-on compensator made just for 10/22s that looks very much like this one on it. https://www.wingtactical.com/firearm-parts/ar-15/muzzle-devices/smith-enterprise-5-56-good-iron-muzzle-brake/

My mom gave me a couple of old bolt action .22 rifles of my dad's but I don't keep them here. When she dies my brothers will most likely take them but that's okay. One is a single shot and one has a tubular magazine. I think it's a Winchester and a Remington.

I've got the 10/22 target bull barrel with a thumbhole stock on her.  Shoots single hole groups at 50yds with CCI Standard Velocity.

Am getting another 10/22, but a cheapie with plastic stock to build out as a project gun.  Main difference is the barrel will be threaded and the stock a little more tactical.

Dream .22lr?  A Weihrauch (sportwaffen und operflachentechnik)  HW 66 Jagd-Match.

I don't guess I have a dream .22 LR rifle........ mine have always been utilitarian versus fancy.

My go-to .22 for downright accuracy is my trusty Remington Nylon 66.

My Marlin 60's are great tools as well.

I do have a Remington 512 bolt action that was my uncle's. Sometime in the past the stock got broken and the barrel needs to be re-crowned, but I want to restore it. I've always liked to work with wood, and have always wanted to carve a stock....so, sometime down the road, I'll tackle it.

Rastus' thread on his T Bolt got me thinking ... Damn I hate you Rastus!
<snip>

Oh yeah.  Say it a gain and I'll remind you about the Blue Ruger....huh, how do you like that big boy?

Blue Ruger, Blue Ruger, Blue Ruger.

My bestus one is the one I won right here...the Blue Ruger.  I sure wish we had those give-a-way things again.

Remington 552 Speedmaster and the T-bolt are nice.  I think of them as "Gentleman's guns".  Dang T-bolt can't shoot it's way out of a paper bag because of the trigger.   Bilt I have an A-bolt from the mid-80's unfired I picked up for $500 with tax from a local gun store no blemishes on it including a good quality scope.  Got the 39A and a Winchester 9422.  The 9422 showed up around 1981 and never shot worth a dang....I'm just sayin'...love the gun hate the groups and I have a new barrel from Numrich's somewhere around for the last year to put on it.  Then there is the 10/22 with the AAC Cloak barrel.  Got an AR-7...THANKS AGAIN Majer for the mag.

My most accurate, a Remington Matchmaster 513T.  Sighted in for 45 yards it shoots bugholes.  Killed 83 squirrels with that one year many years ago...one "miss" on a moving squirrel in the neck all the rest were head shots.  Yep, I am bragging and nope, I don't eat squirrel brains with or without scrambled eggs (sorry to disappoint you Peg).

Surprisingly, the cheap Marlin bolts from 12-15 years ago are good guns if you tune the trigger up.  I don't have one but each of my boys do.

Marlin Model 60, 25, and 795. My favorite Winchester single shot from the 1940s my dad bought from a Sears catalog. A couple of others.

Don’t shoot it anymore...

Yeah, I'd like to have one of those 22/45's.  It's on the list somewhere.  If I was more of a 1911 guy I'd for sure have one.

I am a big believer in pistol training using a 22 LR.  My accuracy improved greatly by switching from the centerfire to an 22 and noticing a bad habit getting started.  Other than being taught the basics of how to properly hold and squeeze the trigger the biggest improvement in my accuracy came by putting a 22LR into my practice routine.

We have three in the safe right now... A Henry Golden Boy...beautiful rifle. I bought a S&W Victory when they came out, and I think it's a nice pistol, especially for the price.

Third is a Marlin 60 I just brought home from my daughter's safe. It was my late son-in-law's first rifle. I brought it home to clean it up and work on it. I put about 200 rounds through it last weekend and, although it's just one step above a Red Ryder, it's a little tack driver.  I'm going to keep it running right so when Mom decides my granddaughter is ready, she can learn to shoot on her Daddy's first rifle.

I also scooped up a Browning A-Bold circa 1986 +/- unfired.  I picked that up a couple of years ago and it's time to shoot it.

to add to what Rastus commented about .22lr for practice...I put about 150 a week through an Advantage Arms .22lr conversion for my G34.... I fitted the .22 slide with a set of Heinie sights similar to what are on the 9mm...the range does not allow drawing from a holster, so I start with muzzle touching the tray... a bunch of years ago a local Sports Authority was going out of business and I bought several cases of UMC for $7 a 500 round brick... slowly working my way through it

Sears Model 3T ( I've had the one for 54 years great little rifle)

I had to look up that 3T to see what it looked like.  Nice.  Who built that for Sears?

Which by the way, gives me an idea to go buy some old Sears and Montgomery Wards guns.

I'll join -

Ruger 10/22, a tear down and rebuild project in the making. I bought it used, thought I'd have some fun sprucing it up a mite. I picked up one of those magazine holders that holds 3 of the 10/22 mags for quick mage changes. I have a ton of replacement parts I've acquired over the past 10-15 years I've had it, but got way-layed by my various AR builds. Soon, though, soon . . .

Springfield/Savage Model 87A, works, but in really rough shape, cracked stock, etc. Another future restoration project

Marlin Model 60 50th Anniversary Model, bought on a whim when they came out and I actually had some spare money in those days; tack-driver. Hate having to put my hand in front of the muzzle to use the speed loader I got, though, kinda violates a whole mess o'rules.

I have a "Ted Williams" Mod 200 16ga shotgun sold by Sears years ago. It's basically a Winchester 1200 pump with someone else's name on it. It's in excellent condition (other than needing a new butt pad) and I paid $75 for it.

As for .22 pistols, I have a first year Browning Buckmark (before they hogged out the slide to save weight) that even with the crappier-than-later-model sights still shoots quarter-sized groups.
I also have a Buckmark Target Model just a few years newer with adjustable trigger and Millet sights that shoots even tighter groups (I traded a Buckmark silhouette model with 10" barrel for it after getting out of that game).
I have my f-i-l's Heritage Rough Rider with spare .22 Mag cylinder. It shoots well for a cheap gun, but I really don't see the need for the aesthetics-killing manual safety, but if you need a cheap shooter they fill the bill.
I also have a NAA mini that I carry in my front pocket with snake shot in three holes and HP's in the others.

I have quite a few .22's but today a co-worker brought me a Savage Anschutz Mark 12 to look at. In very good shape (but not 100%). He dug it up at his mothers' house who recently passed, it was his when he was a kid and he is no longer into firearms (thanks to his wife). He wants me to find a good price for it. I see them going for between $300 and $400 on some Internet sites and I am thinking of getting it myself. Any of you have experience with them?

I know I talked about this build for several years, but finally got the receiver to finish it out.

It's a 10/22 with a TactSol fluted barrel.  Wow!  Is it ever light., 5#s.  Hogue molded stock, Burris Fast Fire sight.

Don't need a new trigger.   Maybe a longer bolt lever is all.

How's it shoot.  Well it's raining today so I went to the 25yd indoor range.  After finally getting it sighted in, here's a 10 shot group standing at 25yds.  (Okay, I did lean a little against the wall of the stall.

For 30 bucks more than a plain Ruger Mark IV you can get a Turnbull color case hardened one. Even the thread protectors on the threaded barrel models are color case hardened. Does that say buy me? https://www.turnbullrestoration.com/gun/turnbull-ruger-mark-iv-turnbull-mfg/

Alf... if you start getting first shot flyers after dropping the bolt, but good rest of group, limit the vertical play of your firing pin...

He Les, we need to capture all of your helpful hints for 10/22's in a thread.  Why don't you think about the tricks you know that work and what you've seen that doesn't work and post it here?  You'd be helping more than a few of us out.

Maybe a several threads.  Something in general as on a thread that applies broadly to rifle or pistol or shotgun....and then some specific threads for 10/22's, AR-15's, pistol cartridge AR-15's?

About the only think I can think of adding right now is to add an o-ring at the end of the barrel of a 10/22 where it butts to the receiver to help quieten a suppressed 10/22.

I'm just sayin'.....

I agree.  There should be a sticky of helpful hints.  I'd suggest keeping them separate.  One for 10/22, one for ARs, a separate for AR pistol.  One for AKs.   etc.

Title: Re: What .22lr Is On Your Wall?
Post by: les snyder on January 13, 2018, 07:25:12 PM
the evolution of my STC 10/22... if you are not familiar with the Chevy Truck Sportsman's Team Challenge, it was a three man team event over two days... one day required .22lr rifle, .22lr pistol, and  center fire pistol the other shotgun....various combinations of rifle and pistol were shot... the long range targets were 10 steel falling plates at 90yd protected by various shape cut outs... circle, triangle, square, diamond, star, shot off hand... the star was the most difficult ... you were allowed two loaded magazines, 2 1/2 minute time limit, and had to reload magazine under time... the long range had about 45 targets IIRC... with a couple of 1" bonus targets at 75yd... another had vertical racks of 4" targets, that "unlocked" 2" targets out to 75yd

year 1... regular 10/22  with the addition of a Clark fluted match barrel, in factory custom stock, no barrel band... Leupold scope mount to receiver... Tasco AO 6-24x44  1/8 minute click, 1/8 minute cross hair dot....reduced the depth of the sear notch on the hammer, but otherwise pretty much stock... all 3 guns had loose mounts after the match (they had been loctited)

year 2... built a fixture so I could reduce the depth of the hammer notch by precision grinding of the hammer's bottom radius, another fixture to hold a square ceramic stone parallel in the hammer notch to incrementally change the angle of the trigger engagement ...adjustable with a fine thread cap screw...so the trigger would not "cock" the hammer ... (checked with a dial indicator)....relocated the trigger return plunger so that it pushed directly forward on the trigger and not diagonally across it... built a scope mount that cantilevered directly off the barrel...added a Fajen thumbhole stock...the trigger could be adjusted down to 10oz, but that was way too lite, so adjusted  to give a 1 1/2# pull...had a informative talk with Ken Tapp and David Tubb at the match

year 3... Ken Tapp suggested full length bedding of the barrel, and adding a second mounting bolt and not try to support the barrel with the aluminum receiver as if it were full floated... David Tubb suggested reducing the head space of the bolt... I did both...made a cheek cut out to allow the rifle to be held more vertically... got better with higher magnification of the scope in practice

year 4... added a harmonic tuner for the barrel... my SW M41 liked WinSuper X high velocity ammo (you had to knock down the steel plates so we opted for the supposedly less accurate high velocity ammo)... this really helped as you could tune the barrel vibration harmonic to the ammo, rather than searching for the lot of ammo that worked the best... a piece of 1 1/4 inch round aluminum stock about 4" long was center bored for the .930 barrel... a lengthwise saw cut, and two cross pinch bolts was added... you shot a group at 100yd, and moved the harmonic tuner... you could watch the groups open and close with the slight change of location... on a wind less day off a rest it would consistently put 10 shots on an IPSC paster at 100yd

year 5... the added accuracy from the tuner showed up a first shot flyer when dropping the bolt by hand...scratched my head, but in looking at the bolt noticed that the firing pin had considerable up/down motion...we had played with some of the high end match ammo, that had the dimple in the middle to evenly distribute the priming compound around the rim, so it occurred that the ignition might be at fault... ground a "v" to a hardened cap screw, and tapped it into the firing pin slot to limit vertical movement... a friend then TIG welded it in place, and faced it down... no more first round flyers...built a cartridge rim thickness check gauge to separate "match" ammo, but spent most of the time working with the pistol and a couple of scopes...at the time I could still see pretty well, and shot it better with open sights, which I used... this was the last year (1998) the match was held in south Florida... it was one of the most fun matches I have competed in

I really like Mannlicher stocks...I dunno why but I do.  I have a CZ 452 FS in 17 HMR and now that I can get another 452 FS they don't make them.  They were replaced with the 455 which is a fine gun but not on par with a 452.

If I can get a 452 FS in 22 WMR I will round out all three.  Which is my goal.  There's one offered on Gunbroker at $900 plus 3% CC fee plus $45 shipping....even though I want it that's too much even if it is unfired.

Mine is a Rapid Air Weapons HM1000X in .25 caliber. Decent groups to 100 yards and quiet as a mouse fart.

Here's a pic of it:

Thanks! Yup. The radar chrony. It works really well. It's sort of necessary for a pellet gun, with their loopy trajectory. I haven't measured groups on it, yet. Started working again and am about to move into a new home. Too busy to play :(

Agreed. I don't like those grips on the blued gun either, but I think it would look good with (imitation) ivory. “Son, only a pimp in a Louisiana whore-house carries pearl-handled revolvers. These are ivory.” - General George S. Patton Jr. I can't argue with that. Ebony grips on the gold one would probably be good for a little barbecue gun.

Wow. Looks like NAA is stepping up their game. I used to have a Black Widow that was .22 LR or WMR, depending on which cylinder you had in it. Definitely for close range encounters. The case one is the best looking, IMO.

If I can get a 452 FS in 22 WMR I will round out all three.  Which is my goal.  There's one offered on Gunbroker at $900 plus 3% CC fee plus $45 shipping....even though I want it that's too much even if it is unfired.
I missed this one.  I went to within 10% of the price and was hoping it would be relisted at the 45 day mark...but it went after about 40 days.  It was new in box....oh well.  There will be another on Gunbroker someday.

If you do get a .22 WMR check out this CCI .22 Win Mag A22 Magnum GamePoint ammo. It has a 35 grain bullet at 2100 fps for 343 ft-lbs at the muzzle. Compared to their 40 grain Maxi Mag and 30 grain Maxi Mag +V, that's about 25 ft-lbs more than I would expect.

When compared to centerfire pistol calibers, it's a little more power than any of Remington UMC's 7 different 9mm Luger loads from 115 grains up to 147 grains, and close to all 3 of their .45 ACP 230 grain loads. I didn't know a .22 rimfire rifle was capable of that much power. Maybe they weren't until now.

I have some of that waiting to be tried.  I have a really fine Marlin 883SS that shoots pretty well.  I've been through some ammo testing for accuracy but it's been so dang long I'm going to have to do it again.  I think it does best with 40 grain bullets....ran some 33 grain Remington with Vtip through it but not as accurate but good enough.

I just picked up a Mossberg 342 KC, I just need to find a magazine for it.

I forgot all about the 342KC. Very tactical looking. :) I had something that must have been a Mossberg 46M or something very much like that model. It had issues, including a missing trigger guard. But a neighbor gave it to me for free so I didn't complain. After making a trigger guard out of a piece of angle iron (very time consuming) and doing a few other things, I think I sold it for 10 bucks. I guess it originally looked something like this picture.
