Title: Tactical Rifle Alert... Shooting Gallery
Post by: Marshal Halloway on March 05, 2008, 03:45:08 PM
Short notice, guys!

Outdoor Channels "surprised us" by airing this episode tonight (03/05/08)

Performance Rifles
The hottest topic in all of shooting is the phenomenal growth of AR-15 style military-style rifles for
competition, hunting and self-defense. Erik Lund is the U.S. Shooting Academy's AR-15 expert,
and he takes us from the operation of the rifle, the basics, right into advanced training for selfdefense
as part of his Performance Rifle course.

That stinks because my Cable provider just up graded it to the HD channels and I no longer get it with my package and They can't get out to me for another week to upgrade my box.

I saw the program and I was just wondering what brand of AR that Eric Lund was using in his hammer firing demo.  I noticed that the buttstock was really different?  During this segment, Michael was using a stag arms AR, but Eric never said what his was.  Thanks

I liked the program, and I was watching carefully at how Erik was using that Viking sling... :)

I believe that stock is an LMT SOPMOD stock.

Alot of the rifles Erik runs are Sabre Defense since they sponsor the 3 gun sport so much. Erik just happens to win a rifle at about every 3 gun match he shoots. I think the buttstock you are asking about is the Magpul M93a and its on a Colt registered M16 lower.

Yep, 00 bullett is correct.  It was a CMMG 16" SS (1/8) Midlength upper, with Troy Industries rails and rear sight and a PRI gas block/front sight combo.  It was outfitted with an EOTech 552 sight.  Lower is a Colt M16A1 lower with a Magpul M93 stock.

Right after that show was aired...Marshal and I kept getting phone calls and e-mails asking/telling/ commenting/ on and saying "   Isn't that the Down Range guy?  And.... That's the Erik on Down Range isn't it? And hey, we just saw your man Erik on TV....

And the best one was "Isn't that your guy that we just saw?"
I could only cry and weakly reply.." Only in my dreams sir.. only in my dreams..

I'd like to put in a big ole plug for the out-of-the-box Stage Arms rifles I was using. They were rocks, especially the one fitted with the Aimpoint M4...first five shots sub-MOA at 100 yards with Wolfe ammo...

Way cool show! Unfortunately I live in California and the gun laws are so strict here I have no clue what i can and can't get. I would really like to get a AR style carbine. Any suggestions on any models that would comply with california laws and not ruin the fun?? :-\

I'm not fully up to speed on the laws in California, so don't take this as Gospel, but I think as long as they were registered with the State, there are some AR's in Cali.  I would check with your local gun stores or shooting clubs.  I think you'll be able to get one, but it's gonna cost you.

Hey MB, don't forget the Saiga .308 AK. Being a die hard fan of Mikeys rifle, it deserves a look. 400$ out of the box, 20 round mags available, and a scope rail on the reciever, what is not to like????? If it has to be all classic military, you can have a gunsmith go over it later. Get one now  before the election!

There are special makes for CA, which has their own AWB like MA, along with others which meet the crazy state restrictions. Like in CA i thinks you can not have detachable mags. Check this one from Bushmaster for CA http://www.bushmaster.com/catalog_carbon15_AZC-C15RM4FT.asp

I am sure there are others so take a look. \

Sorry Hazcat... Mikey = Kalashnakov, ie the AK system. Russia exports a sporter design with a slightly modified mag in .223, 7.62 and .308. Check out the rifles on the russianamericanarmory website. You will not get match accuracy out of one, but it will hit a popper and be very reliable to boot.

Are you talking about this place http://www.raacfirearms.com/rifles.htm and the Saiga rifles?

CAs AWB is very simlar to the the "brady ban"   in that unless the model is listed, its features that make it "evil"

www.calguns.net   is a great place to start if you want to build a AR( or AK) in CA.  Or you could just do what alot of people are doing these days, buy a mini 14 and do the 10/22 treatment too it.  In other words throw every thing away other then the hunk of metal around the serail number and build a diffrent gun.

Michael,
I agree! That would make a great show. Right now it is fourth in line for home defense use (I have 3 black guns fitted for low light conditions) but I would love to have some things to practice at my gun club with the lever gun. Who knows, iImight move it up the HD ladder right behind my 870!
