Title: I got "Gun-Free Zoned" this weekend
Post by: ericire12 on June 23, 2009, 08:50:57 PM
...... At a movie theater in North Charleston SC......

I had to go back to the car to lock up my concealed carry piece because they had a sign posted. I guess I am just too big of a threat to the public to carry a LEGALLY concealed firearm into a movie theater on a Friday night .....  ::) ...... Its a good thing they had that big sign posted of a gun with a red line through it..... I mean who knows how many people could have gotten killed if I, a law abiding citizen who has undergone an extensive background check by our State Law Enforcement Division and who has also been certified in the classroom and on the firing line, tried to sit there and enjoy a movie while having a gun on my person....... I mean, just think of how many lives that sign saved that night..... hell, think of how many lives that sign saves every year...... Who ever came up with that thing has done us all a great service...... I know that if we just put those things up everywhere, gun crime will end instantly........ There was no gun crime at the movie theater that night, so one could only conclude that it was because they designated this establishment as a gun free zone and posted that amazing life saving sign....... oh, wait....... maybe it was because of the 8 cops they had working there that night and the 6 police cars parked out front (literally -- Im not joking).

Maybe they were looking for the Governor!  I hear it went on a "Walkabout"... ;D

Were the cops checking people?  I've gone into stores like BassPro that post a sign.  I don't check my sidearm.

I don't know where you live Eric, but is it a crime to carry in a marked "no gun zone"? Personally, I try to respect these just out of courtesy to the property owner (their house, their rules and if I don't like it I know where the door is). That said, if its a PITA to lose the gun or I don't feel safe, I develop a sudden case of poor eyesight and just didn't see the sign officer.

No metal detector means I don't care what signs they have up. You're not breaking the law, just ignoring their rules. If they happen to notice and say something, then leave. Of course if they were that dead set against me carrying, I probably wouldn't frequent them anyway.

Sometimes it's just nice to do something that you know would piss off some anti-gunner.

There has been more than one occassion I've walked into a place and done a 360 when I saw the metal detector.

Actually, a 360 would just confuse them. I think you meant a 180. ;D

Well, that's the point. Confuse them and sneak past when they're trying to figure it out.

Hey, some of us had to WORK   all day and are tired.  ;)

Well, In my neck of the woods violating a posted sign is against the law. Saying you "did not see the sign" would not be enough to get you out of some deep doodoo if you got nailed. If they post an approved sign and it was posted on the door you entered through, then you are pretty much screwed. I obeyed the sign and put my gun in the car. I was with a group and did not want to ruin the evening for everyone, plus the tickets were already paid for.... otherwise, I would have denied them my business and gone home.

This was the first time in a very long time I had seen a sign posted and was very surprised. My state is pretty good about not creating gun free zones -- you know except for the typical "sensitive areas" like the post office and any government building.  ::)

Was there a metal detector ?

No, but with the way the cop at the main entrance was looking me over, I can now say that I know how Squibby must feel when she is out for a night on the town.

Up here the wise thing to do would be to admit to bad eyesight (not hard in my case), but that is not necessary.  The only way to get in trouble is if they know you are carrying, and if they use that knowledge to ask you to leave, and if they know you are carrying and ask you to leave and you do not, then you are in trouble.  However, if they ask if you are carrying and you say not, there is nothing they can do.  If you screw up and they see your gun and ask you to leave you must.

Outside of schools, courthouses, police stations, etc., I have a problem very similar to colorblindness.  I was in my banker's office on a 90+ degree day with my suit coat on (dead giveaway), and he asked me if I was carrying.  I admitted it to him, and his only request was that I not shoot him in a robbery.  Banks post as a requirement of their insurance companies, and many bankers ignore it.

Bottom line - I would not have gone back to the car.  I would have carried in, but I don't know your laws.

Trespassing on posted private property that is not open to the public for business is a different situation than a sign at amovie theatre that is open for public business.  You've got to do what you feel comfortable with....that many police around I'd probably find another place anyway.

Here in Oklahoma, just to rub it in a bit, when signs in public places of business are posted "no guns" the fine is a tressapass fine for $75 in Tulsa....but that's only after the storekeeper asks you to leave, calles the police, the police show up and ask you to leave and you tell them you are staying anyway.  Not a bad deal for a concealed carry holder...police show up, look at your license, then you leave no foul, no check to be written and no doubt will never shop there again.

In NH the State reserves the right to regulate fire arms (Preemption ) They can put up the signs if they want, but it doesn't mean I have to pay attention to it.

I've been thinking about this today and other than BassPro Shops, I can't think of anywhere I've been in the last few years that has been posted.  BassPro doesn't say "No CC", just "Please check sidearms at the counter"...

As I said, I left a gun show because the SP were checking firearms and chose to go back home.  Other than that, I go to restaurants, bars (don't drink), shopping, etc....and carry nearly everywhere other than those areas that are federally mandated as off limits.  I have not been to a moving picture show in some years now.  I took the kid to the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy three years running so that's been at least six years.

Maybe I should pay closer attention, or not!

Gander is the same as Basspro. The sign is not directed at CCW folks. Its for people who bring in guns to trade or for repair. The drill is you take it to the service counter, work the action to show them it's empty and then, if its a pistol (all I've ever brought in to gander) they put it in a a plastic hard case sealed with a pastic tie. They just are trying to prevent some nimrod from an ND. The clerk I asked about CCW just smiled and scratched the small of her back while asking if I'd seen their big sale on fishing rods. ;D

Gander Mountain has a sign that states all firearms and bows must be checked in at the customer service counter, and then it adds that this does not pertain to concealed carry  ;D

Was the sign put up buy the convention center or the gun show itself, cause one's worse than the other.

As I recall, Westroads Mall in Omaha had one of those signs and we all know how well THAT worked out.

If I recall correctly They had the same signs at their sister mall and quietly took them down for awhile to avoid scrutiny for their policy.

The last gunshow I went to they asked if you were CCW and if so asked for the ammo.  The ammo was put in a manilla envelope with your name on it and given back to you when you left.  STUPID practice and an impractical safty policy that would not stop somebody from loading up with more ammo.  Just waiting for a negligent discharge to happen with all the unnecessary gun handling.  I was there with a off duty cop that didn't have to unload and my neighbor that works high end security and is issued a select fire AR daily at work.  The neighbor ejected the cartidges from his revolver, went in the bathroom and reloaded with his extra rounds.  When they asked if I was CCW, I just said no.

In KS is a misdeameanor to carry in a business that has made itself safety free. I'm not sure about doing it in the local government buildings, as to whether it is a more serious crime. Of course I don't see 'advertisements' anymore. They're everywhere and I just get so I can't see them anymore.  ::)

......at a local Papa Johns. This one was not a State Law Enforcement Division approved sign (it was just a small sticker with a gun with a red line through it) so I marched my happy ass on in there with the Glock 26 IWB. They were probably wondering why I had suck a big smirk on my face the whole time...... Yes, I will be sending their info to our state's local gun rights organization who will give them some serious hell!

Ya know, these "gun free zones" need to be relabeled to rob me or zero retaliation or even easy picken's zones.

These kind of "laws" are only there to keep an honest person honest.
As we all know a person whom wants to commit crimes will not stop to consider signs or laws or anything else.

I didn't get gun free banished, but had an incident last night just the same:

As is common I was carrying my 1911, inside the waistband under a t-shirt (heavy gray) yesterday.  I had made a few stops on the way to the range at a gas station, a mall, Gander Mountain, and a Tractor Supply.  Every time I arrived in a parking lot the leather came off and went in the bags.  While in different places I was in direct contact with "rent-a-cops," customers and employees, and actual law enforcement.  In one store I was at a counter picking up some ar-10 mags I had ordered  ;D when I found myself with three officers (two detectives and one uniform) picking up crimson trace grips they had ordered.  My t-shirt (from my gunsmith) drew attention, and I thought my hardware would be noticed, but it wasn't.

When I arrived at the range I put the carry piece in the bag, where it stayed until the match was over.  A couple people that new I had carried (strange story as to how they found out) looked at me as I was ready to leave and thought I wasn't carrying home.  I lifted the shirt to show them.

All this is to show that concealed was concealed!

On the way home I met a couple shooting friends at a sports bar for a burger and good time.  Upon arriving at the table I threw the jacket over the chair and sat down.  After ordering I went to the restroom to wash range and road dust off, and on my way to the restroom the waitress caught up with me.  She had forgotten to ask me something, and in trying to get my attention (I've got ears related to years of race cars, loud music and guns) she grabbed me in a way I wouldn't mind being grabbed ... If I hadn't had a junk of steel there.  Not knowing what was happening I grabbed her hand as it rested right at belt level and spun around yanking my other hand out of my pocket with my SureFire.  When I recognized her I apologized and said, with a grin, she could feel free to grab me but just not there.  She was shocked but asked about my order and left.

When I came back out to the table the guys asked what had happened.  I didn't know what the meant at first, but after they explained I explained while being very vague about what she grabbed (they all understood, but no one else overhearing would have).  They told me after she left me they saw her go worker to worker, and finally someone they assumed to be a manager kept circling the table.  By this time two white shirts with ties were acting like vultures.

The rest of the evening our table received minimal contact and service the rest of our stay ... Which I made sure we stretched out.  I do feel sorry for those around us, because they also received horrible service, and they don't know what happened.

I discussed with the others, and we all did the same at the end:  We had to ask a white shirt for our tabs (I volunteered to go ask for it), we each put in our payments (one check, mine was cash, and a couple credit cards), we made sure that they knew we wanted our change back.  The check was written for the exact amount, the two credit card slips were signed and $0.00 written in the tip line, and I took every penny and wrote a note that I know why they treated us like they did.

On the way out I turned and confronted a white shirt (he wasn't happy to see me make a ninety at the door and head his way).  I got real close and whispered to him that I did not like the way we were treated.  He got a little cocky and said that THEY did not appreciate me bringing a gun into a "family establishment."  I then explained that he had no reason to believe I had a gun (fishing to see if they had seen something or just a little grope) to which he said "missy" had felt it.  I told him that where she put her hand all she felt was a holster, and she had no way of knowing it was a gun ... many people carry cellphones low on their belts.  As I left he demanded to either be shown or allow a search, but by this time I was on top and said "Uh Uh Uhhhh ... Concealed means concealed, and you'll just need to use your imagination."

When I got home last night I was convinced I would never go back there.  However, I'm letting cooler heads prevail.  Next Tuesday I will carry my J-frame in my favorite location (for it and the bond arms), the cellphone holster will be on the right hip, and we are meeting there again  ;D
