Title: 30 40 Krag
Post by: shooter32 on March 29, 2011, 01:27:42 PM
Any advice will be appreciated.
A friend of mine will be bring over his 30 40 Krag Wednesday for some help getting the bolt back in place. He has tried with no luck, he has done some researching and still can't get it. I have no experience with the Krag but doesn't seem like it will be that difficult to do, am I wrong?  ???

It's notorious for that. If you are not familiar with it you won't get it.
It's been years but IIRC there is a small lever on the lower left rear of the receiver that needs to be manipulated.

Here's complete disassembly and reassemby. You can even download a PDF of it.

Good rifle, just was over engineered,...Teddy Roosevelt, and the Rough Riders, loved the performance, but hated that the Spanish Mausers reloaded via stripper clips, at a rate of 3 to 1.

They were rather cumbersome with the side loading, and lack of a rapid reload under combat. However, a potent round.

Seems ol' Teddy was willing to try the than "new" 1903 Springfields.....seemed to compensate for the San Juan Hill thing.... ::)

Utilize the previous posts for step by step. I have shot them. They are very similar to a K-31 Swiss, or Swedish Mauser.

It's just that bolt and side loading thing....

Slickest bolt ever issued to US troops but it was obsolete before it was issued.
No fault of the rifle itself, but technology over ran the cartridge, the 30/40 Krag cartridge was the last blackpowder cartridge adopted by the US Army and fired a Roundnose bullet .
Meanwhile the Spanish were using smokeless Mauser's pushing an early Spitzer bullet 100's of FPS faster, and further.
TR did not carry one however, He bought Winchester 1895s for himself and the actual Commander of the 1st US volunteer's  Gen.Leonard Wood

TR even used to sight in his 1895 Winchester on the White House lawn....Too bad those days are long gone,...

He was a Winchester President, and complained when it wasn't to his liking.....and had them get it right.

I wonder if BHO even knows how to spell Winchester....
