Title: When It Rains..... It Pours !
Post by: billt on July 14, 2017, 05:36:10 AM
It all started last week when my air wasn't keeping up with cooling the house. So I called the A/C guy and found out I was 3-1/2 pounds low on Freon. $250.00 later the house was cool again. (He checked for leaks and there were none he could find). Then, Mel has been wanting a new canister vacuum, so she could clean under the bed and furniture. Our Dyson upright won't fit. So I walked out of Best Buy $600.00 poorer with a brand new Dyson Canister.

Then, 2 days later my pool pump started sounding like it had stones inside the motor. (The bearings were shot). $800.00 later I had a brand new Hayward pool pump, running smooth and quietly again. Then, to top it all off our icemaker crapped out....... For the second time. The repair guy quoted me $500.00 for a new icemaker, along with a new circuit board that runs it. (It was shorting out). The first time just the icemaker cost me $350.00. It's a Samsung that I paid $1,800.00 for just 8 years ago.

So that was it. No way I was going to put another $500.00 into that dog with fleas. The repair guy told me to stay away from anything Samsung. They are over engineered, the parts are hard to get, and overpriced. (He said 2 weeks to get the icemaker and circuit board). And he said he repairs more Samsung and LG appliances than any other brand. He said he's constantly waiting on parts for customers. He recommended Whirlpool / Maytag. I have a Samsung 55" LCD in our bedroom, that has nowhere near the picture quality my 65" Vizio has in our family room. So needless to say, I'm so done with anything Samsung.

Bottom line... We went to Home Depot and I took his advice. We got a 25 cu. ft. Whirlpool for just under $1,100.00 delivered, installed, and the old Samsung hauled away. So for barely double what they wanted to fix the icemaker.... For the second time in 8 years, I ended up with a brand new fridge / freezer. Now the only thing left to crap out is our dishwasher. It's acting up on occasion. The soap builds up all over the inside of the door, and it's getting noisier when it runs . So I'm sure that will be next on the list. I went through all of this about 8 to 10 years ago. It just sucks that all of this stuff comes up on the end of it's service life all at once.

Pool?  Icemaker?

You must be a rich Democrat!  :o

Man that seems like a lot of money for an icemaker.   I don't have one...but from what I see around 50+ lbs of ice a day is a "standard" for built-in units.  You guys must sell ice, eh?

Samsung has a couple of lines of TV's so just make sure it's an apples to apples comparison.  I had a couple of old Samsung plasma TV's which had been around for over 10 years doing fine.  So I nabbed a 4K from Samsung for an upgrade and it's great.  Now, as far as their other appliances I would not doubt what you were told.

I had to pick up a new dishwasher and refrigerator last year (yes it is a pain when these things go out at the same time).  I went with Whirlpool on both.  That was based upon the ratings at Home Depot and Lowes...I only searched on units with 4+ ratings and with over 50 ratings....I prefer over 500 ratings so that there is some age to the units.  Regardless, the Whirlpool dishwasher is great....much better than the crappy KitchenAide it replaced or the Kenmore before that.  The refrigerator...it's a refrigerator so cold is cold...but I got it on sale and I got one with the pull out drawer.  The pull out drawer is waaayyyy nicer and more useful than I thought it would be.

The dishwashers seem to have about a 10 year life.  A good refrigerator about 15....however the crappy LG we did have lasted maybe 8-9 years....not to mention I put a couple of replacement parts in it myself to save a few $$$$'s.  I'll never buy an LG unit (or a KitchenAide) again and, actually, I was glad to get rid of the POS LG unit because I did have to repair it several times and I was tired of the thing breaking.

That Whirlpool dishwasher does a great job now it's just a matter of longevity.  They build some of their stuff here in Tulsa so...I dunno where mine came from but that helps figure in.

The Whirlpool fridge we bought had 5,065 reviews, and a 4-1/2 star rating. So with that, along with the repairman's recommendation, I felt safe buying it. It has all the same features my old Samsung had, except for the digital temperature controls. So big deal, I'll buy a couple of  $4 thermometers to hang inside.

Until it crapped out, the Samsung made ice OK, but it was slow as hell to dispense it. It seemed like you had to hold your glass under it forever, because the damn auger turned so slow. I'm not sold on this water and ice in the door, but it's just about all they sell now a days. I remember an old Sears fridge / freezer I had back in the 70's. It had a non dispensing icemaker you just reached in and grabbed the ice out of the bin. When it got full a mechanical arm would hit the ice and shut it off. I had to replace it because the ice started tasting bad, and the guy said it was from inferior plastic they used in manufacturing. A replacement only cost me $65.00 installed at the time, and the ice tasted fine after that.

They had fridge / freezers at Home Depot that were over $3,500.00! They had LCD screens on the door. You can install an app. on your phone that will allow you look inside your fridge from the grocery store, to see if you need anything. I thought that's what grocery lists were for? These people buy into this overpriced crap, then they are forced to keep repairing these expensive units, because they've got so much tied up in them, they can't afford to junk them out. If I get 10 or so years out of this new one without any repairs, and it takes a dump, I'll just replace it again. For just $1,100.00 that's not so bad...... $3,500.00, you gotta' be nuts!

Pool?.....

Pool???......

Out here pools are a lot like boats. The 2 greatest days of owning either, is the day you buy it...... And the day you sell it. In between is a big, expensive PITA. My pool hasn't been too bad. I put it in back in 1999. Mine is Pebble Tech with a Caretaker system, and a waterfall that runs off a separate pump. Pebble Tech is very maintenance free. And with the Caretaker cleaning system, I only vacuum it twice a year. It has revolving cleaning heads that pop up and blast a jet of water along the bottom. That stirs up any dirt, and the skimmer carries it off to the filter. My pool is always crystal clear. Without it you have to constantly vacuum it, or else buy one of those crawlers. They're a PITA and always break. And they run over $1K for a good one. If there even is a "good one". Every time I go to the pool place to buy chemicals, there is always some guy either dropping off one for repair. Or else picking one up.

We just don't use our pool that much anymore. We did last week when it hit 122F here. The water is around 92F. They don't really add any value to your home. But they do make it more sellable. Assuming they are in good working order. That said, I would never own another one. What I would have instead are one of those portable spa's. For older people they're better, and require less maintenance. In the Fall you just drain and cover them. Then in the Spring you just fill them up and jump in. We might get one next Summer. We still haven't made up our mind. What turns me off is it's just something else to maintain and repair. The older I get, the less I want to deal with in that regard.

Yea, my folks put a pool in when I was about ten.  I joined the Navy so I could stop cleaning the POS!!!

I'll never own another!

Dang....I need to start replacing pool pumps for folks.......  :o

We replaced our Hayward 1 hp with a 1.5 hp three years ago for $160.00 shipped from Amazon. The pump and motor were already assembled, so it was four bolts and two hose connections and done. I already had it wired to handle the current for the 1.5.
The guy at an area pool store that we buy some stuff from said about five years is average for a unit. The one we replaced was the original and was ten years old.

1.5 is tiny for a pool pump. you can drop 2 grand on a good pool pump np.

True. The cheapest variable speed pumps run in the $1,500.00 range. I have a 1.5 pump that just runs my waterfall. They are trying to code variable speed in my area for all in ground pools. More of the whole, "energy saving" band wagon they're all jumping on. It's bull$h!t because with my Caretaker System I only run my pump 3 hours a day max. And my water is crystal clear.

Besides variable speed won't work as well with a Caretaker, because it's dependent on high water pressure to operate efficiently. These forced regulations they put on people, do absolutely nothing to improve anything. I remember when I had my pool put in, Glendale forced me to install an automatic closure system on my backyard sliding glass door. Kids drowning in pools, and all of that. I told them I had no kids, and wasn't having any. No matter. No closure system, no final inspection buy off. No water in pool. I had to do the same for my backyard gate.

There was only one company in the entire Valley at that time who installed automatic door closers on sliding glass Arcadia Doors...... $400.00. After I put it in, the building inspector signed off on my pool. The problem was the damn door was so hard to open, my wife couldn't even open it. So I took a pair of dykes and cut the wire, thereby eliminating the closing operation. $400.00 for nothing. Same with the back gate. I couldn't take out the trash without 2 people. (At least with that I could unload the spring). All of this stuff is nothing but, "feel good" ordinances. More kids are drowning in Phoenix swimming pools today than ever before. I put all of this stupidity into the same class as gun control. Stupid parents with kids are no different than stupid people with guns.

A friend of mine ran his filter line through a copper coil in a barrel stove he built. turned his above ground pool into a huge hot tub.
It got so hot he had to cut out half the coils, but when he got it right he was swimming in January, outdoors, in NH.  LOL

Bill, Bill, Bill, Bill, Bill...so much angst for the wonderful and enlightened progressives in government and in the public.  When will you get with the program and go with the flow?  Big brother loves you....big brother wants to help you...big brother is best for you.  Don't you love big brother?

Why don't you love big brother?  What is wrong...are you filled with, dare it be said, distaste or even hate for big brother?  Because you are barely smart enough to just breath please realize big brother only means you good things so long as you listen, smile, wave and give back what people have erroneously said you earned (a big brother overpayment adjustment...not a tax).

I am afraid when people like you get together we can see why the Southern Poverty Law Center is such a necessity to help big brother and the public identify the sprouting of hate groups in Amerika.  You should relax and realize that big brother is always right and that big brother is always best.  Big brother may have to protect it's comrades citizens by making an example of you...you better get to smiling, waving and supporting our magnanimous and loving big brother before the DPRK Democratic party, tech moguls and news media hear about you and demand action.

You should really study to become more tolerant and honest like the examples of Donna Brazile or Debbie Wasserman Schultz if you want to be a truly enlightened and productive citizen.    :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o  :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o  :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o  :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o

Tom, how big of a "cooker" did that guy build and what diameter copper pipe did he use for the coil?  If I ever have a pool (may have to dig one and line it with visqueen) I'd like to use it in the winter.  I'm assuming it was wood fired?

Some people out here take a bunch of 1" Schedule 40 pipe, paint it flat black, and run it back and forth across the length of their patio roofs. Then tee it off into the pool pump line with a valve. It's amazing how hot that water will get out here with only sunlight beating down on that black pipe. It can extend your swimming season a good 3 to 4 months a year. Natural gas pool heaters use too much gas, and cost a fortune to run. Some are over 400,000 BTU.

He bought the hardware and put it on a 55  gallon drum. Started out with 9 coils, TO MUCH !  LOL had to cut it back to 5 coils.
He was the same guy who lost his license for DWI and put a chainsaw motor on a 10 speed bike.
Fabricated his own gas tank and muffler.
Cops pulled him over after work one night because they clocked him at 50 .
No ticket, they just wanted to see how he set it up.

Made a flat box, about 4'x8', painted black inside/out.  Took two 100' black, rubber hoses and coiled them flat.   Put a plexi cover of the top.  In bright sun and with the pool at about 70, it raised the water temp about 2 degrees.  Given the rate of flow it would take about a week to reach 80+.   Turned it off at night to minimize loss.

It's only a 13,000 gallon pool....plenty enough.
Like I said, the original was only a 1 horse and is lasted ten years, twice as long as the industry standard (at least according to the pool pro).

Last pumps I ordered were horizontal multi-stage centrifugals that output 14,500 bbls per day (525,000 gallons a day) at 1,750 psig.  Big suckas....used a lot of electricity...they hummed with continuous 700 HP.

Last pumps used on a well we were pumping 110 barrels per minute (6,652,000 gallons per day) at 9,350 psig.  Not one pump, but a slew of them piped together and all computer controlled for single point control....also had one idling in case we lost one during the frac job.

However....the big levee pumps in New Orleans pump 1.2 million gallons a minute.  That's a big hoss...even if it can't pump more than a few psi in discharge pressure.  That's enough to empty a standard Olympic sized pool in about 30 seconds.

Back in the '80s and '90s Samsung and GoldStar were selling VCRs and other electronics so cheap they were practically giving them away. They had to since no one would pay good money for Korean crap like that. Then GoldStar merged with Lucky Chemical and LG was born. The next thing you know LG and Samsung each spent millions of dollars convincing people that not only were they not a big pile of $h!t, but were actually better than most other brands, and the rest is history.

When I moved into this house 26 years ago it came with a GM Frigidaire fridge that looked old even back then. I had to get it charged with Freon once and may have called a service man for one other thing, I can't recall for sure. Later on I talked to a guy at a service parts supply store about a problem I had with it. He happily sold me a timer which I installed myself. That was the 3rd(?) and final repair that was made and I still have the same fridge today. Something minor goes wrong with it every 10 years or so. The freezer smells funky if I don't keep a box of baking soda in it but what do you expect after a few decades and no one knows how many owners, plus the house being empty awhile before I moved in? The fridge stays at a constant 40 degrees and the freezer isn't much colder but is still below freezing. When I want something deep frozen to 0 degrees I put it in the chest freezer.

Also, I'm still on my first microwave oven that I bought around 1986. That puts it at about 31 years old and it's never had any kind of work done on it. It's a Tappan 500 and has one cooking level - on. It has one button to open the door and a dial timer that turns to set it for up to 15 minutes. The light comes on when it's running and it has a mechanical ding when it's done. It's so simple that almost nothing CAN go wrong with it. For most things I'll stick with the good old American brands and avoid the Korean ones as long as possible.

Our oil pumps were low volume but high pressure for extruding aluminum profiles (I worked for Alcoa's soft alloy division). Most of our presses either used Oilgear's old warhorse D-pump (three per machine powered by 200 hp motors) or the newer Oilgear PVV (using 250 hp motors). They wouldn't do much more than a couple hundred gpm, depending on model, but they would do it from 3500 to 5000 psi.  ;D
Twice a year I had to tune each pump for optimum output.....fun.

You can keep your 100 degree lows. I'm happy with 60 degree lows at night. I can turn off the A/C, and the house soaked up enough heat during the 80 or so degree day that I won't have to run the furnace either. I may have to cover up with a sheet in the middle of the night but not likely. It doesn't get much better than that.

Maybe. Boasting would seem to imply I actually did something to boast about. I'm just lucky enough to live somewhere that has decent weather for most of the year. All I did was stay here.   :)  To me anyplace that hits 100 degrees is considered uninhabitable. I know some people must feel the same way about a place that snows 1/4 of the year, but I can always dress warmer if I'm cold. When it's hot and I'm wearing next to nothing I can't take anything else off, and once it gets in the 90s it doesn't take much to make me feel physically ill. 100 degrees plus would literally kill me.

Yeah, it's a heck of a thing to admit but getting older and fatter I can't deal with the heat like I used to.  I grew up in Louisiana with humidity and would cut grass at 95-96 degrees and not have a problem other than sweating like two pigs (20 years ago).  After I moved up here the low humidity made it a breeze for me....I remember a neighbor taking pity on me cutting the grass in 105 degree heat and bringing some ice water.  105 with a low sun and low humidity was easy compared to the 95+ and high humidity.

That's too long for snow on the ground.  I actually like northern Arkansas and my folks have 30 acres in the woods there.  It's a few degrees cooler than Oklahoma or Louisiana in the summer and a nice compromise between the two in humidity.  There's a small spring drip where it stays cool in the summer but it's about 50' down a steep gulley.  I need some stairs to get to it....but I could live there in a heartbeat.  Only problem is the wife does not like Arkansas, for some prejudiced reason she believes if we move to Arkansas we will become 1st cousins and have buck teeth...pisses me off because I think Arkansas is great.

Oh well.....thread drift all over again.

I agree. In Chicago I couldn't stand the hot, HUMID Summers. I would take a shower, go outside, and in 5 minutes it was like you never took one. Not to mention the bugs and Mosquito's eating you alive as soon as the Sun got to the horizon.

Out here I'll take 110 and 5% humidity any day of the week, and twice on Sunday. You don't even break a sweat unless you really exert yourself. In 26 years out here I've yet to get a single Mosquito bite.... And I will NEVER miss snow ever again!

We've had an abundance of rain over the last two months, and combined with temps in the mid to upper 90's equals humidity above the 90% range...... in other words, it's moist down here in the land of cotton. There's so much moisture in the air that it makes pretty much any physical exertion feel to the body like you're breathing through a drinking straw.
When I was a teen, I could work 12-14 hours out in this crap cropping tobacco, pulling weeds from peanuts, and laying irrigation pipes etc. I worked in a hot industrial complex for years (we had equipment running anywhere from 300 to 1400 degrees year round) but it was drier air inside than out.

Our current A/C unit is twelve years old. The warranty ran out two years ago, but just before it did we had two new fans installed and it runs well (knock on wood).
We put a metal roof on the house five years ago and it helps some in summer, but really cut down on winter heating bills by 50%.

Kid sister lives in Phoenix.  I live in Florida.  Been that way for more than 30 years.

When she first got there (Phoenix) she called me up and said it was near perfect.  "When the kids get out of the pool, they're dry before they reach the house."

Told her it's quite similar here.  When we get out of the shower and dry off, before we can get into our clothes we're wet again.

Same thing, Only different.

I was miserable the entire time I was stationed at Fort Polk, LA. It seems to me that it was 100% humidity 100% of the time. Right across the border in east Texas wasn't great either but Louisiana seemed even worse. In the winter it was cold and damp when we got up and soon it was hot and muggy. The high humidity made both extremes worse. It rained on a lot of weekends too. We just couldn't get a break.

The weather channel (weather.com) says it's 40% humidity right now with a high of 80 today. It feels good but I wouldn't want to work in the heat all day. Ideally I wouldn't have to use the A/C or furnace but there are rare occasions that I have to use both in the same day. Today isn't one of them. I'll turn the A/C off when I go to bed. It's supposed to be around 60 tonight which means it will be about 70 or slightly higher in the house. I save a lot of wear and tear on my 2 window A/Cs by only using them 1/2 of the time.

40% humidity and a high of 80 down here would cause some to have chill bumps. That's November weather now.

I don't buy into global warming..... I do believe in cyclical patterns and shifting trends drawn out over centuries.
For example, forty years ago late September in south Georgia meant you might need a light jacket while waiting on the school bus, but you could ditch it by 10:00 AM and would need it again by 7:00 PM. The same was true for late spring into early May.
We don't have those climates here any more even during cooler years. But I believe that pattern is occurring somewhere else on the planet... and somewhere that, forty years ago, had warmer weather now has cooler weather.
Some time in the future, we will have those patterns again.....if we're still here.

Having grown up between Baton Rouge and New Orleans we always looked at that as "North" Louisiana where it was cooler and drier.  :D  I attended 4H Camp not far from there in the Summer and it did seem to warm up slower and cool off quicker at night.  If you wanted really miserable the Belle Chasse Naval Air Station south of New Orleans was probably it.

I remember those days too.  In October it got downright cool and you had to have a sweater for evenings or nights.  By mid-November we had our first frost.  My 2 cents is that the solar cycle we were in at that time was cooler...the solar luminosity is up from them and that means more solar energy heating us up.  Now the sun is being observed in a cooling cycle and we may see that weather pattern here in the not too distant future before we check out....it would be nice to see that again.  By the mid-90's it was hard to find a cold spell long enough to cold smoke sausage.

This past "winter" was the warmest I can remember. I don't think it got below freezing a dozen times, and we only had two 'hard freezes' where temps dipped below twenty (and one of those was on the last day of winter). That has made it hard this summer insect-wise. The gnats and skeeters are out in record numbers. It also made it rough on the peach farmers since we didn't have many chill hours. We were borderline on chill hours for our pecan trees as well.

Funny thing is, just a few years back we had the highest number of days in a row below freezing for the last fifty years.

Western Oregon, Oregon in general actually, may have it's political issues but climate is one of the things that keeps a lot of us here, rarely get snow and a days below freezing a year and summers stay in the low 90's with evening in the low 60's-USUALLY.  Given the laws that passed I am thankful I moved out of the Portland Metro area about a dozen years ago and quit working up there a few months back but the pathouli  ooze is creeping...  Idaho or Montana are on the list for relocation.

Did they even try?  The batteries (three) went south on my Kenworth a couple months ago.  Following my reset (I usually get 40 to 46 hours off Saturday afternoon till I head out Monday) they wouldn't even make the engine grunt.  I always got it started with either my charger set on boost, or with a jump from the car or pick up.  Those little batteries would spin it right over.

tried jumping it for about 20 mins, his little gas truck just did not have it.   one battery would not hold over 6 volts when we were at the part store.  the dates on them were from july 2012, so it was time.   had a slow start this morning, and has been starting slower then normal for the past couple weeks.  just not had the time to change them out.  I have my best friend and her 4 kids staying with me on their epic road trip from ohio to so cal.  she moved out of sac about 8 years ago. I have only seen her once in that time and only get to talk to her once a year if I am lucky(she is one of those never picks up her phone or calls you back)  she is my sister, no relation.   got to teach all but the youngest( 3 ) too water ski last week.  it has been great.

I really need to clone myself. 7 projects running, now 23 employees and I still have the wood sitting covered in my barn waiting to build my house... I need to find the days in my hours.

magoo I really hope you are east of the cascades... we need the state  Jefferson too happen.

it would fix nor cal and OR... let the liberal pos take Portland and the coast.

How and why did they settle on the name "Jefferson" ?  All he did was buy it.
Why not something with deeper local connections like , say, Astoria ?

That sucks. The original battery in my full size (gas) pickup lasted 10-11 years. One winter day it just didn't have enough juice. The replacement battery has been in there 6-7 years and hopefully will last a few more years.

Nope, over the hill from you in Albany.  IF the state of Jefferson were a possibility, or if it starts looking that way,  we have some property on the Deschutes  ;)

Yesterday I added another line too my cell service... this morning all 19 of them are not working... since use them for both time clocks and work, its been a real big head ache.    Been waiting out side of the att. Corpate store this morning waiting for it too open.  Too say I am a little hot is an understatement.   Today was the last straw, I am going with a different carrier.  Which sucks becuase up here if you want decent data you have too go with them.   I am taking my 1100 a month some place else.

TAB, Pay attention to how the truck starts over the coming year as the temperatures are high now and it gets colder.  The fact that they could not jump it still sticks in my mind.  That just isn't right.  My years as a mechanic and looking beyond the simple leads me to suspect the starter is in the early stages of failure.  Many batteries are either wrongly labeled bad, or killed early and need replacement, by a starter motor that is bad and drawing too much.

With the average life expectancy of a vehicle battery being between three and five years, any battery failure within the next two years is a red flag you have other electrical issues.  And, I would start with the starter and cables leading to it.

HInspecting all the cables and both alternators is already happening this weekend.  When we  disconnected the bad battery, it started right up on one.   I am hoping its just a case of one battery going bad.  I have had very good luck with interstate comm'l. Batteries over the years.

I always plug my block and oil pan heater at night.   I have them both on a remote timer.  I push one button about 10 mins before I leave in the morning, makes starting super easy even bellow zero.   I have been looking at getting one of the diesel fired burner recirculating systems for the coolent system, just can't justify the 2k in my climate.

Went into the corporate store,  they offered too pay next month free,  I tool them up on it.  Which will give me time too shop for new comm'l cell serive provider.

During the tests on cables and alternators, have them check amp draw on the starter as well - both from a cold start condition and with a hot engine (the starter is a big heat sink and will hold high temps from a running engine - heat is the enemy of both batteries and starters).

yep, the good news is my starter is not gear reduction( it just weights about 50# loll)   so I can pull it, turn down the comutator, put new brushes in it and good for the next 200k miles.  I am doing the testing at home.   I don't trust shops to work on my truck.  the only time I let any one else touch my vehicles is when I don't have the tools to make the repair.  ( so mainly electronics or highly spealized tools like hub mounted brake lathes for older 4wd pick ups with lockers.)  it is very hard to find a good mechanic.   the ones that are good are always very, very busy. they are just like virgins on prom night, we know they are out there some where, you just can't find them.
