I sold off my .357Max and all the brass. Now I miss it. I want something, uh, big. Yeah, yeah. Something that really let you know you're holding power in your hand. I was sorting out some of my videos and I watch the one of me shooting the Max. It wasn't a big deal. I went through 50+ rounds that day in probably less than an hour. Also that was through a 10" T/C which is pretty light weight.
The .44Mag is nice, but compared to the .357Max it really is somewhat tame. I know I could load up some super hot stuff with H-100. Or I could get a 4" 629 if I want that mini-cannon experience. But..
So I started looking at the 460V. A nice 5" .460SW that shoots, of course, 45LC and 454Casul. If I do a sinking fund I can probably have it by Christmas. It's all one would need for NA game. And of course for the burgler behind the fridge at the neighbor's house.
BUT.t.t.t.t.t
Then I got thinking, why not go all the way. Why stop at a .460. Why not a .500. I mean if you're going to stand on your hind legs with a hand cannon, it might as well be a .50. Right? I've seen the videos of the people about killing themselves shooting these monsters. (I'm only loading one round for the first time.) I got to believe there's a technique, that I somehow know but that others haven't a clue. 70/30 support/strong hand grip ratio, maybe?
There's got to be a lot of them out there, used. Fired once and put back in the box.

Mr Bane likes the boomers! He may chime in..

the SW460 is more versatile for hand load... and IIRC has more velocity... all my big bore shooting was years ago, though a friend had a .500 Linebaugh (by Hamilton Bowen).... heavy linotype bullet at 1400fps would pulverize cement blocks
-
the only advantage of the 460 over the 500 is being able to shoot 45c 454c and 460
the 500 has much heavier bullet options and can be loaded a lot hotter.

I'd been mulling that thought for a couple of weeks now. I decided that since I have the .44mag covered I really wouldn't shoot 45LC anyway. So really it's 460SW vs 500.
I'm thinking the 500 is winning. If i'm going big, I might as well go all the way. This is more of a "fun" to have or "do I have the moxie?" "Can I handle this?" Machismo type of thing anyway.
See lots of the shorties, survival packs, for sale, but I want the ~6" comp. One guy has a matching set of survival packs, .44, .460 & .500 NIB collector editions and wants $7,500 for the set. No thanks.
I'll be haunting the auctions for the next couple of months. And looking for brass.

Go with the .500. It's the biggest and the baddest. And when you get right down to it, that's why you buy a big bore handgun in the first place. POWER!

They come in a smaller .444 Marlin as well.

I've got both of them. One in .45-70 and the other in .500 S&W Magnum. Of the 2 with factory loads, the .500 is substantially more punishing to shoot. It has far higher pressure over the .45-70. The .45-70 loads shown with the revolver are handloads. A Lyman 552 Gr. Gas Check bullet over a healthy charge of IMR 3031. They are a handful. But loaded with factory .45-70, 405 Gr. soft points, it's quite mild to shoot.

They aren't historically or mechanically interesting, and they're no good for EDC so I'm not interested.
I would trade for something in those 3 categories.

How is your will power? Do I need to give a sales pitch, or is this enough?

If you're going to get a long cylinder BFR why not get a .450 Marlin? http://www.magnumresearch.com/Firearms/Magnum-Research-450-Marlin-Revolver-10-inch-Barrel.asp

I don't know. Just not a fan of those long barrels anymore.
While I'm waiting for just the right .500 to come available, I did manage to pick up a 5" .44 Mag last night. $695.

I sold my 6" one a while back and have been hankering for a more manageable 5". If I could find speed loaders for it, I'd take it and some .44spl to the next ICORE match.

Very nice!

Nice wheel-gun Alf. The 5" barrel looks like a great compromise and .44 Magnum is plenty for any critters that are likely to cross my path.
I also like the look of Ruger Redhawks but don't know if I'd get the 5.5" or 4.2" barrel. There's only a 2 ounce difference in weight between the two.
