Title: Black Friday Sales.
Post by: alfsauve on November 22, 2017, 05:18:26 PM
Local gun store (and pawn shop) who does a big business at gun shows, is having a blowout Black Friday sale.   To me the most notable item is the basic 10/22 for $159.   YES!  I'll finally get to start my custom build.   This beats the $169 I was going to pay for a used one at Shoot Straight (Tampa).

I'm wondering does Ruger have a MAP agreement?   Is Ruger under-righting such a discount?  Or is Cherokee Gun Store (Canton, GA) just using this as a loss leader to get people to the store.  Not a great store. More of a greasy pawn shop specializing in contractor tools.   Most of their gun business is at gun shows.

Anybody else got really good deals?

This is why I avoid "Black Friday". People are nuts. I think I can live with waiting, and paying a few bucks more. Or else buy after the holidays.

not necessarily a "deal" but I ordered one of the Colt M4 lowers from Brownells for $250.... I had a 16" Colt HBAR upper that had been sitting in the safe since it's retirement in 2005, but instead re barreled a real 14.5" Colt M4 barrel on,  pinned and welded the long flash hider to make it 16"... don't know why, but having a fixed sight, plastic hand guard, all Colt was the objective... regards

I'm not in the market for any more guns, ammo, or accessories so no good deals for me. From Black Friday until New Year's day one road near me has a crazy amount of traffic. They're Christmas shopping for a month and returning things for a week. I've seen it backed up for 2.5 miles on the way to one of the local shopping malls. Friday I don't plan on going any farther than my sidewalk when I check my mail.

No plans at all for Small Business Saturday, and no big plans for Cyber Monday either, when Americans are expected to spend 4 billion dollars in 1 day.

Saved by the ad

Adventure Outdoors (Smyrna, GA, 15,000+ guns in stock) has run an ad that next week they'll meet and knock 5% off any advertised Good Friday PRINT ad.

Guess what? I saved the Print edition of the paper with the ad from Cherokee Gun.

Here's the two ads.

So I can stroll down to Adv Out any time next week and save an additional $8.  No crowds to fight.

I noticed that too.  I have no doubt they are hard working taxpayers...

Heck, that one red-headed "lady" looks like she's trying to take a bite of that other poor lady in the midst of the struggle.  :o :o ;D

Got it today.   List price was $239.   I paid $151.

Went to the gun counter.  Actually, Adv Out is so big they have around 75yds of "counter"   It's divided by manufacturer, so I went to the Ruger section.  Not busy this morning, and the sales rep ask what I'm looking for.  I explain and show him the ads.  He pulls out their cheapest, black, plastic stock 10/22.  I said fine.  And we started the paperwork.  He did have to call a manager to get discount approval which was agreed to with no hassle.    While doing the paperwork I ask how many people had taken advantage of this offer.  The rep said I was the first one asking for the 10/22.  I said I was surprised and he said most people don't read and don't pay attention.   Or, he said, if I were a tactical sort, most people have low situational awareness.

I'll do pictures tomorrow.  Other than the receipt, nothing special about this gun... YET.

Oh and the $80+ savings only cost me another $350 by the time I got out of there.  2 Carhart long sleeve shirts, 100rds of 9mm, 200rds of .22lr, a P320 mag and a few other things.

Attached.  Nothing special just a plain old plastic stock 10/22 with a barrel band.

I've stripped it already and am attaching a Tactical Solutions barrel, which I've had stored up for this occasion,  as we speak.

Anybody need a plain, black, plastic stock?

They had those for $189 at a local "Bi-mart," that just opened in my neck of the woods. They also had great deals on ammo and reloading stuff. I got a few of those Federal XM855 cans of 420 rounds for $108 ea. Works out to 28 cents a round, which is the cheapest I've seen it in a long time. Thank god for Trump!

Alf, Let me check with my Son. I gave him one of my 10-22's and He might like that stock better.

Let me know.  It's yours for shipping.

I ordered the Hogue tactical stock for it.  Unfortunately,  the wife wants to hold it as a Chrisrmas present.

I've had a Tactical Solutions fluted barrel for this project for several years waiting on the receiver.

Let me know how you like the Hogue stock.  Especially the heft of it...I have a Fajen adjustable that I may replace with something.

Alf...if your intent is to make a competition gun of the 10/22 (50yd or so), I might be able to offer a couple of tricks... I shot the Chevy Truck Sportsman's Team Challenge 5 years, and during that time my 10/22 slowly evolved... for Steel Challenge, the accuracy is probably not really necessary

Thanks, Les,

I guess mainly I'm now thinking about optics.    Having it set for various competitions would be great, though we don't see a lot of formal stuff around here.

Send any hint/tips you can think of.  If I do shooting steel it'll be revolver, but I'm not near good enough to be "competitive".   We did one steel stage at IRC, only took 6 shots and 8 seconds ;)

My other 10/22 is my accuracy gun.  50yds, 1 hole with CCI Std velocity.

just a couple of random things...
I had a .930" after market barrel...the first year all three team guns had loosened the receiver mounted sight base... after cantilevering the mounts off the barrel, no further problems

if you start to get a single flyer after dropping the bolt, limit the vertical play of your firing pin (I welded a steel wedge in the firing pin slot)

I added a second mounting lug on the barrel, and bedded the barrel and not the action...stock was a Fajen thumb hole that I whittled a chunk out of so I could hold my head more vertical

a harmonic tuner was added the 5th year and allowed me to "tune" the barrel for the ammo... a 1 1/4" piece of aluminum round stock was bored with a .930 hole... a saw slit lengthwise was cross threaded for a pinch bolt... clamped to the muzzle...shoot 5 shots, move the tuner slightly, and watch the groups change size... off a bench in early no wind morning would put 10 shots on a USPSA paster at 100yd with Win SuperX high velocity

scope was a Tasco World Class AO 6-24x44 with 1/8min clicks and 1/8min dot...anything above 12x you could watch your pulse in

built a fixture to change the depth and angle of the hammer sear notch, and changed the reset plunger to push directly forward on the trigger and not diagonally across... 20oz trigger

I use my CMMG dedicated .22lr upper in an AR for most of my .22 rifle shooting now, so the STC rifle is a safe queen, waiting for the STC to come back to Florida.... :)

edit... I reduced the head space after a long conversation with Mr. David Tubb...

I don't know if anyone here posted it already but there were 203,086 NICS checks on Black Friday, the highest ever for a single day. Second and third place were Black Friday 2016 (185,713) and 2015 (185,345). If the trend continues it could be over 220,000 next year.

Well, Ruger must be providing some incentives.   BassPro/Cabelas just sent an flyer with the basic entry 10/22 for $169.99.

WoW!   I was thinking more on the line of which scope and which trigger group.   Far beyond me.

This one is more of a tactical type setup.  If it does 1" at 50yds that'll be fine.    I was thinking of a rapid zoom 1-4X tactical scope similar to the Bushnell BTR

My other one, a target model straight out of the box does one hole at 50yd so I'm not touching that one.  It has a Bushnell 2-7X P-Rimfire and I'm happy with that.

Interesting at what lengths you've gone through on you guns.

Didn't know if I ever got around to posting the finished build.  (Another thread?  I don't remember.)

5 lbs according to the bathroom scale.  I'd take it to the UPS store but they' probably freak out.
Looks good, feels good, & shoots good.  I'd recommend the Hogue stock for any build or purpose.

The TacSol barrel is really light and not bad accuracy wise.  This group was shot first thing in the morning and represents shots 35-40, so the barrel wasn't cold not very hot either.  This is from a bean bag with a red dot, and while not the pinnacle of accuracy is more than sufficient for tactical competition.

The Burris Fast Fire is a 4MOA and works fine in this application.  One of it's features as well as it's draw back is the automated brightness and lack of on/off switch.  The drawback is that as it gets dimmer the dot will eventually shut itself off.   In a scenario where you have a dark room, but a dimly lit distant target, you won't have a dot to work with.  No problem for Rimfire Challenge.

Alf... looks good... I'm not familiar with the Steel Challenge rules ( we shot some in the late 80's locally, but with pistol and not with rim fire) so I suppose you don't need to reload under time... if you do , modifying the bolt hold open lever to allow the bolt to drop by working the charging handle is an asset, as is adding an extended "bumper" pad by epoxying a piece of hardwood in the recess at the bottom of the magazine... good shooting

I bought a replacement bolt release for my 10/22 a long, long time ago and years later found out you can modify the stock part by grinding some metal out of the hole. It was probably about 10 bucks and I can put the original one back in if I want to.
