Amazing Podcast. Definitely my favorite thus far. Theatre of the mind. I could almost feel the heat, smell the sand and bacon. So looking forward to seeing it on Shooting Gallery. Excellent work Michael, you lucky SOB!

Great podcast, MB. I really enjoyed hearing how much fun you had as it makes me think back to my first time to Africa (to RSA, not Namibia like you). But the excitement and awe of being in Africa was the same. And it was great to hear you suggest to others to go investigate a hunt into Africa as it really is quite affordable. You can spend more on a guided moose or brown bear hunt, or a trophy deer hunt down here in TX. Sorry, I'll take an exotic trip to the Dark Continent where there are more varied critters plus the ability to take more animals and *still* be cheaper than a domestic hunt. The only issue is that your taxidermy bill will be higher. ;D

The food is great (but I drank beer, not gin and tonics in camp), the PHs are friendly and are very much like us as far as joking around and having fun once they know you're not going to be butthead just because you're a paid client who thinks that they deserve to be waited on. Our PH gave elaborate info on the local flora and fauna which added to the trip. It's hard to describe to someone who's not been how much fun it is but those who have gone almost never go only once!

My wife and I went to South Africa in May and had an absolutely great time! Everyone we talked to after we got back was so surprised at how little the trip actually cost us. One of my co-workers had received an email quote for a guided elk hunt in Idaho while we were in Africa. Without airfare the elk hunt would cost him $9500 per person, if we had paid full price (I got a screaming deal at a Whitetails Unlimited banquet) our two person hunt would have cost about the same after the airfare! South Africa is such a beautiful country and the variety of animals completely surprised my wife, she had as much fun photographing my hunt and the animals as I had hunting. We had such an amazing time that my wife , a non-hunter, wants to go back in a few years and try for a Kudu! Listing to the podcast and someone else's take on the experience only made the desire to return that much stronger.

Sure thing, I'll post a few after work tonight.
Do they need to be hosted on another site or can the be posted directly here?

This could just be user error, but when I tried to post pictures directly to here using the controls on the "new post" page (click "additional options" at the bottom,) I kept violating the image size limit (300KB), which most modern digital cameras will do.  You would have to modify the resolution and shrink the picture or host it somewhere else.  There is also a 6 picture limit when using the built in controls. If I am doing it wrong, anyone else can step in and set him straight.

I definitely want to see your Africa pictures too, so I hope this doesn't discourage you!

All said and done I can't recommend http://www.wildgamesafaris.com/ (http://www.wildgamesafaris.com/) in South Africa highly enough, they really went out of their way to make sure our hunt was the best it could be.

@Sean:

Is that a suppressor on your rifle in the first of the "after" pictures? If so, did you have trouble taking that to S. Africa with you?

Thanks

It is a suppressor but I rented the gun from the PH and that's his suppressor. I figured for the cost it made more sense for me to rent a gun than to bother with all the paperwork. We were talking about gun laws when they found out I worked at a gun store, it turns out that even though it takes them over a year to get a gun they can just walk in and buy a suppressor just like they were buying a scope or a sling, no problem, just pay and go. Just goes to show that even though we get gun laws mostly right, there is a lot that America gets wrong.

Truly one of my all time favorite podcasts, and it came to me at the perfect time.

I have wanted to go to Africa since I can remember.  I just like the idea of being out there, getting African dirt on my boots.  I want to see it all...experience it all.  I want to hunt the same ground where the very first people hunted.  But I always relegated the idea to the realm of fantasy...I never believed I could afford to go.

But just a couple of weeks before the podcast, I had been talking to a buddy of mine who said he wanted to hunt Africa, and I shared with him my lifelong dream, and that I had always considered it just that...a dream.

My friend challenged me to come with him, and start saving now...even just a little bit every month...and we'll see where we're at in 5 years.  So I started a special Africa savings account, and I'm working on it.  I don't know how realistic my chances are of pulling it off, but I have decided to try.

Then along came Michael's podcast...right when I needed it.  It brought Africa to life in my mind, and re-ignited the desire to go.  I listen to Michael's Africa stories over and over to remind myself why I want to do this...I want some Africa stories of my own.

When you hunt in Africa, do you get to keep any of the meat? Or is it all heads and horns?

You can't take it back home with you, we did eat some of it and it was actually pretty good. Most of it goes to local tribe/villages. The only stuff that can be imported are the hides and skulls.

That sucks... Is it African law or US law that gets in the way?

Didn't ask, but I assume it has to do with US importation laws.
