Title: Traveling, hotels, and safe firearm storage.
Post by: PEOM on February 28, 2008, 08:41:02 AM
What do most of you think is the proper way of storing a rifle when one travels and has to stay a a hotel in a city for a few days.
I would think the options are:

                 1. Leave in the car trunk. (risk of theft?)
                 2. Store in non-descript  bag in hotel room. (Is there a risk of theft or questions from housekeeping?

What are your guys opinions?

First get a good, lockable carrier.

Couple of questions.

What class hotel?  Higher end would probably have some safe storage for it.

If a "motel 6" type I would keep it in the room with me at night and transfer to car trunk during day, especially if you will be using the car for trans during the day.

Pretty much what I do.  Plus, if I need to attend meetings in the hotel after checking out I take the locked case to the front desk and have them hold in a secure area.  I have them sign a receipt when I give to them and counter sign when I take back.

If you are leaving it in the room locked up, I would recommend putting the "Do Not Disturb" signs on the door. At least house keeping won't come in while you are away. I can live with reusing a towel, for a little more piece of mind.

Just a thought,
Michael

Like Hazcat says, this is the way I sometimes do it, plus putting the "Do Not Disturb" sign out like mbrun recommends....as well as leaving the TV turned up.  Sometimes I ask if they will watch some sporting equipment for me ....then I give them the case and leave before telling them what it is....then I tell 'em when I check out.
