Title: Movie thread
Post by: Big Frank on September 13, 2018, 04:16:09 PM
I can't recall there being a movie thread on the forum so I thought I'd start one. Have you seen anything good lately? Have you seen anything that should be avoided by the plague.

I saw a few minutes of The First Purge online. Believe it or not the NRA is mostly responsible for there being a purge. I didn't watch the rest of it.

The Predator is supposed to be opening tomorrow but I'll be watching it at 7:00 this evening. I only watched a couple of the trailers. That was enough to know there's a bigger badder predator and he brought his hunting dogs with him. Only 1 hour and 45 minutes to go.

The Predator was well worth the price of admission, which in my case that was nothing. But it would be worth paying to see too. I'm looking forward to a sequel or three.

I'll tell you how to get a free ticket to whatever movie you want to see, provided you're near the right kind of theater. I joined Coke Rewards a few years ago and save bottle caps from Coke products for the codes inside. I entered the the code from a Powerade cap and got one free month of Cinemark Movie Club. You get a free movie pass for every month you're a member, but I didn't want to see anything that was showing at the time. Instead, I ordered an advance ticket for The Predator, then quit the club last week before my free month was up. I printed my pass for the first show and waited until today. The cashier scanned the pass I printed and gave me my ticket. Since I've actually picked up a couple of bottle caps I found, I didn't even have to buy a drink to get my free movie pass.

Cinemark Cinemas include Century Theaters, CineArts, Tinseltown, and Rave Cinemas. They don't have the giant screen XD auditorium with a projector capable of 35 trillion colors, and custom 12 channel surround sound here. They just have plain old digital cinema and regular surround sound, which is still good. If you're interested, you have until the 24th to get a free month of membership in the club.

I forgot to mention that when I ordered my movie pass they waived the online fee of $1.50 because I was a member of the club. I thought about seeing a different movie that was in 3D. I could have used my free movie pass and paid an up-charge. I think would have cost me $3.00 to see a 3D movie. That's a whole lot better than full price.

If I wanted to see The Predator in IMAX 2D at the next town over I could get a ticket for an NGC Cinema on Fandango for $13.50. I'm sure it would be great but I'm not paying that much to see it.

I guess the last movie I saw in a theater was STAR WARS: The Last Jedi which was last December.

We don't go to the movies much. The last movie we went to see outside of a STAR WARS movie was the remake of True Grit.

SOLO came out in the spring which was a bad time to try and get to the theater for us so I missed it. I might buy the DVD.

Until yesterday I don't think I've been to the movies since Ant-Man in 2015. I can't believe I haven't been to a movie theater in 3 years. Maybe I'm forgetting something. We have one drive-in theater 6 miles away that's still open but I haven't been to a drive-in in ages. They have 3 screens instead of 2 like the place I used to go, and all the movies are still double features. The Meg with The Nun might be worth $9.00. I remember going to a drive-in with my brothers and maybe my brother's friend a long time ago and we had a pony keg of beer in the back of the van. I don't remember anything else about that night, but we may have been playing Frisbee before the movies started.

The director and co-writer of The Predator was Shane Black, who played Hawkins and was the first one killed in the first Predator movie. He was the radio operator and carried an MP5. While the second showing of The Predator was still in progress, someone already uploaded it online last night. It was a low quality video shot with a camera. It didn't have the credits at the end which is what I wanted to see. I couldn't sit through them.

I like superhero movies, but haven't seen Avengers Infinity Wars yet. I just found out that when Venom comes out October 4th, I can see it in 3D for just a dollar more than the 2D version, because it's at the matinee price instead of the weekend price.

There's a movie that came out before The Predator, on 9/11, called Alien Predator. It's by Uncork’d Entertainment, and Internet Movie Database, IMDb.com, rates it as 2.3/10. I've gotten emails from Redbox that when I checked to see what the new movies were about, their other movies have gotten really bad ratings too. They made a movie called The 13th Friday instead of Friday The 13th, and some other awfully bad sounding movies.

It sounds like they got their inspiration from The Asylum who made Atlantic Rim instead of Pacific Rim, and way too many other ripoffs to mention. They like to put out DVDs that people get suckered into buying right before the real thing comes out at the theater. If a movie says made by Uncork'd Entertainment or The Asylum, just assume it's a great big steaming pile of $#!^ until proven otherwise.

Another sign of getting old is remakes of movies that you saw in a theater in it's original version.  ;D

Well, as the youngsters around here might say, "Damn, Peg! You old!"

I think my whole family saw The French Connection in 1971, The Godfather in 1972, and The Cowboys with John Wayne, also in 1972. It was sad when The Duke died. I can think of any others right now that I think we all saw together.

I was only six when the original Death Wish came out, but IIRC we saw it at the local drive-in theater.

But heck, they're redoing movies now that were out in my adult years....like Point Break.

Johnny English Strikes Again has been online for a few days and it won't even be in theaters until the Friday before Halloween. That's 5 1/2 weeks later. That's crazy. I'm glad I don't make my living on movie sales. It was so blurry I couldn't see much at first but skipped back and forth until I saw the title. I think I can wait until October to see it.

I've never been much for science fiction. With that said I liked the original "Predator", and watched it until after the now famous jungle shootout scene.

I remember my thoughts after watching "Predator" and I suspect that if this were really happening...an alien came to earth periodically to hunt humans...that someone could sell it as an adventure.  Provide transportation, equipment, training and any other support for individuals or small teams who wished to go up against the best.

There is a segment of Humans who would respond to this as a challenge...an opportunity to prove one self...rather than a murderous invader.

Venom is starting tomorrow. It would be a nice change of pace to see an anti-hero as the main character, but I seriously doubt I'll go see it. If I do go I'll spend the extra 3 bucks to see it in 3D. I could check to see if there's a 3D weekday matinee next week. To me that's the only way movies are worth paying to see.

Some Cinemark cinemas are showing the 40th anniversary of John Carpenter's Halloween Wednesday and Thursday, but not the one I go to. It would be nice to see it before the new one comes out on the 18th and 19th.

I saw an ad for the new Keanu Reeves movie, Replicas. It's coming to theaters on January 11, about 3 weeks after I saw that it was posted online for free. It's rated 5.6/10 at IMDb so it may be worth seeing but not paying to see. Wikipedia says it was sold after a private screening at the Toronto International Film Festival to Entertainment Studios for $4 million. It must have been made on a shoestring budget if they sold it for $4 million. Here are 2 previews at IMDb. It sounds interesting but I'm still too far behind on my TV to watch it.

Christian Bale stars as Dick Chaney in the movie VICE.  The role recently won him a Golden Globe Award.  In his acceptance speech he made it a point to thank Satan for providing his role model for the part.

I'm thinking it's time to stop paying for movies when the proceeds support this kind of evil idiocy.

Dick Cheney wasn't perfect in every way, but he wasn't Satan either.

In 1977 the movie The Car came out and became a cult classic. Now, 42 years later there's a sequel, but it's not really a sequel according to some of the people who saw it. Most of them say it's not very good and some said the car isn't as scary either. And some said it's more like Christine than The Car. It sounds like a waste of time.

Saw an entertaining movie for a change.  Came out of the theater thinking I got a decent return on the ticket price.  What could this possibly be, you may ask.  The film is titled Stan and Ollie, and is the story of Laurel and Hardy, a comedic couple a few of you oldsters out there may remember.

John C. Riley plays Oliver Hardy (while wearing a fat suit) and someone whose name I did not recognize plays Stanley Laurel and both are superb.  The have even managed to mimic the voices and comedic timing to near perfection.  And a couple of the dance scenes are just as I remember from Saturday afternoons in my youth.

The film showcases several of the original skits, but then goes behind the scenes to look at the personal aspect of the comedic duo.  Let me just say it was not all as it appeared on screen.

Anyway, it's an excellent flick that you wouldn't be embarrassed taking your wife to see.

Wow....sounds great, CR...   I enjoyed them often.

I saw a show about them years ago and one of the topics was Stan's "Slow Take".  They described it as it seemed like you saw him realize whatever it was one brain cell at a time.

I've searched for a video of it online  but have never found one

Stan Laurel was played by Steve Coogan. He's been in a lot of TV shows and movies I haven't seen but his face looks familiar. He played Octavius in Night at the Museum, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. He's a voice artist, actor, stand up comedian, impressionist, producer, writer, composer, etc.

Principal photography is finished for Avatar 2 and Avatar 3. If they do well there will also be an Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. Avatar 2 is scheduled to be in theaters December 18, 2020, 6 years after it was supposed to be out. This time we'll get to see what's in the oceans of Pandora.

There's a movie called Brightburn coming to theaters Memorial Day weekend that was already online Friday or Saturday. I watched enough to see if that was really it and it was, but a crappy "camera in the theater" version. It's about an alien baby who crashes to Earth in a spaceship like Superman and a couple adopts him, and he has some or all of Superman's powers, plus more. But he's evil instead of good like Superman. It's an interesting concept. If someone was like a god compared to all humans how would he act? And if you didn't like it, what could you do about it?

Me too. I thought the first Avatar was kind of political. Everything was a perfect paradise until the white man met the natives. That sounds familiar. Like when the Europeans met literally anyone, but I still enjoyed it.

I see that there's a s**tty camera copy of Dark Phoenix online 2 days before I could see it at the theater. People that saw it are rating it anywhere from 1-10. It's a great ending to the X-Men series, or it totally sucks, or it's good, or it's boring. I'll find out someday but with reviews like that I won't be paying to see it.

Stephen King's guide to movie snacks

Entertainment Weekly, July 27, 2008 at 04:00 AM EDT

For a magazine that prides itself on the many aspects of the movie business it covers, EW hasn?t had much to say over the years concerning the important subject of snacks. Oh, an occasional piece about how much they cost, but few words on their culinary wonderfulness. This needs correcting, because, while some people eat snacks while they are at the movies, there are some who go to the movies so they can eat snacks. That would be me. So let me impart a few lessons years of snacking have taught me.

First, support your theater. Buy at the snack bar and damn the expense. You could probably sneak your own food in, but if you?re caught, you?ll be thrown out. As for bringing healthier snacks from home: Did you really hire a babysitter and drive six miles so you could snark cucumber slices half-drowned in buttermilk ranch out of a slimy plastic bag? Is that what you call living it up?

If you want to get healthy, there are places for that: They?re called ?health clubs.? And I find there?s something giddy about tossing down $4.50 for a box of Gummi Bears or a bag of chocolate raisins. It makes me feel like a high roller, especially when the matinee ticket itself only costs 50 cents more.

I always start my order with the ritual drink ? Diet Pepsi if possible, Coke Zero as a fallback, Diet Coke the court of last resort. A big diet cola sops up the calories and cholesterol contained in movie snack food just like a big old sponge soaks up water. This is a proven fact. One expert (me) believes a medium diet cola drink can lower your cholesterol by 20 points and absorb as much as one thousand empty calories. And if you say that?s total crap, I would just point out I don?t call it a ritual drink for nothing. Sometimes I add a strawberry smoothie with lots of whipped cream, but I?m always sure to take enough sips of my ritual drink to absolve me of those calories, too.

With my calorie-absorbent drink in hand, I can then safely order a large popcorn with extra butter. Of course it isn?t really butter, it?s some sort of mystery substance squeezed from the sweat glands of small animals, but I have developed such a taste for it over my years of filmgoing that the real stuff tastes wrong, somehow.

If the counter guy puts on the glandular butter substitute himself, I watch carefully to make sure he greases the middle of the bag as well as the top layer. If it?s self-serve (at the beginning I didn?t like this option, but now I do), I proceed to hammer on that red button until I have what I call a ?heavy bag.? You know you have a heavy bag when the bottom starts to sag and ooze large drops of a yellow puslike substance before you even get into the theater. And don?t forget the salt. Popcorn salt is a little strong for my taste (and it looks like powdered urine); I prefer plain table salt. Half a shaker is about right.

With a ?heavy bag,? caution is a must. Don?t put it on your lap; when the movie?s over and the lights come up, people will think you wet your pants. Courtesy is also a must. Don?t put it on the seat beside you, or the next person is going to sit on a seat that oozes. Not cool, bro.

My candy of choice is Junior Mints. And while I don?t bring bootleg food into the movies, I do bring bootleg toothpicks. Then, as I relax in my seat, I take a toothpick and poke five or six Junior Mints onto it. It ends the dreaded Chocolate Hand, and it?s also kind of fun to eat candy off a stick. I call them Mint-Kebabs.

And although it?s a matter of personal choice, I myself don?t eat movie meat (go on, snicker, I can take it). My motto is ?Never buy a hot dog that?s been waiting in a foil Baggie under a heat lamp.? For all you know, that stray dog could have been there since Revenge of the Sith. Nachos are good, but only if you get the reserve swimming pool of cheese sauce, because one is never enough.

Now that I think of it, the same could be said of snacks. But remember: Start with the ritual drink. After that, you?re on your own.

Agree on King.... great writer (I'll add that many of his books don't translate as well on screen as they are in print).....really crappy citizen.

We average going to the theater once a year. We went a couple weeks ago and saw the latest STAR WARS episode. Tickets were $9.50 each and we passed on the concessions since we had just came from eating supper. That is our normal M.O. We go to our favorite eating joint and have a good meal and skip the high-priced crapola at the concession stand. It still cost $45 total, but I had a belly full of good grub versus crap.

I was stationed outside of Ferndale, CA in the late '70's when hollyweird made a horrible TV miniseries from "Salem's Lot" in Ferndale.

While not a great rendition of the book, it was amazing to watch the set creators make a creepy vampire lair from an old barn up on the hill above the cemetery.

James Mason, not a good move for the old chap...  David Soul, "Hutch" was seen drunk a few times in town and Bonnie Bedelia were the talent...they were combing the local taverns for extras!

Cinemark Movie Club gave me a free 1 month membership again. I wanted to see the new Star Wars movie in 3D and would have paid the upcharge from my 2D movie pass. But it said no passes when I looked at the movie theater's site. When I checked on tickets to see it in 2D it also said no passes. Now they'll take passes but aren't showing it in 3D. I have to cancel my membership by Sunday night so I don't get billed for another month on Monday. Who knows, I just may see a Star Wars movie at the theater for once in my life, instead of on VHS or my computer.

My nearest movie theater could show more movies in 3D or a larger variety of movies if they weren't showing some unheard of Indian movies in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. There must be more Indian doctors and convenience store clerks in Flint than I thought. I wonder if there are enough Indians here to open up a U.S. based customer support center? It sure looks that way. Wikipedia says Hindi, Telugu and Tamil are the 1st, 4th and 5th most spoken first languages in India. Why not show movies in Bengali and Marathi too? The most spoken first languages here are Ebonics, English, and Spanish. Thankfully the movies aren't in Ebonics. I go to the movies to get away from it.

I went to see Ford vs. Ferrari last month - first time I'd been in a theater for a while. Had to see it first in the theater, listening to the roar of the cars (dubbed apparently as the cars they were using were 6-cylinder repros) and watching the cars go zoom around the tracks. Nicely interspersed with real footage from the 60" impressively cleaned up for modern HD.

Tickets were less than $7 each and no, we didn't buy any of the theater's food, so we got out for way less than $20!

Actually, that almost killed it for me too, having watched Ol' Shel in action. BUT, Damon actually did a credible job portraying him - toned down of course! He also was too pretty, and a cowboy hat didn't look good on him. But still . . .

As for Christian Bale as Ken Miles, I was totally blown away by his portrayal. Only thing the movie people did not do was (1) put a nose prosthesis on him (for the uninitiated, Ken had a real honker of a nose), and (2) didn't even attempt to recreate the J-car that killed him. Mind you, Ken, along with Scotsman Jimmy Clark, were my early teen heroes in GT and F1 racing.

1966 and 1968 were really tough years for me. In less than 2 years, the racing world had lost 2 of the best drivers ever, and I lost my 2 heroes.

Same here.

I give the guy credit for being a fairly good actor....but like many others of his ilk, that is ALL he is, someone who gets paid to play make-believe......but that smugness he projects just makes me turn the channel when his movies come on the TV (except the True Grit re-make, I tolerate that one).

If America went back to treating actors like they did before the late 19th century Hollywood would be tolerable.

Have any of you seen 1917 yet? I am interested but haven't gone. I am not sure it is worth getting in the crowds of idiots around a movie theater.

No, but I read that the way it was filmed makes it look like they got it all in one take. I found that interesting.

I didn't know that. To me, that would make it more realistic. I guess I am going to have to "Brave" the crowds and go see it. Thanks.

I went to see 1917 and I'm glad I did.

First, the crowd was mostly senior.  There was no talking/texting going on, and everyone sat quietly enjoying the movie.  That's a real bonus these days.  I don't think the theme appeals to the younger set.

Second, the experience was nicely summed up by another theater-goer on the way out who said:  That's the best WWI movie I've ever seen.  That was true for me, too.

The cinematography was well done and certainly enhanced the experience.  At one point I was so wrapped up in the movie I actually jumped when an explosion occurred on screen.

This is one of the very few flicks I've seen of late where I felt the ticket price was more than worth the experience (and Bunny and I see several movies a month on our weekly date night).

All in all, it's got my recommendation.  I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Maybe I'll go see 1917 too. My movie pass is actually good for 6 months after I cancelled my movie club membership. I didn't word it right before, but someone said 1917 was made to look like it was filmed in one continuous shot.  Like the camera moves but doesn't cut from scene to scene the way most movies do, and it's in real time. I don't know, but if the wabbit says it's good I believe him.

The theater's closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so it will be awhile longer until I use my free movie pass. I was thinking about seeing the Vin Diesel movie Bloodshot. The special effects look... special. :)

Thanks a lot for so many ideas. In general, it's hard for me to be amazed at this chapter because I've watched a lot of movies and series since I was little, so I know about all the really good movies so far. For this reason, I often go to various forums and discussions to be up to date with what is new and to see something new. By the way, I've always gotten used to watch full movies online on FMovies (https://fmovies.show/) because I love this site. Do you know about it?

If you want to watch a movie about two guys going insane with paranoia, The Lighthouse is where it's at. A little artsy at times, but brilliantly agonizing.

Sounds like the left and the Capital incursion.

Recently I watched the movie Avengers: Endgame. After watching Infinity War, I was looking forward to the release of the Endgame. The film is filled with funny moments, irony in relation to oneself. And I just love it. In general, the creators of the Final do not let us relax, they prepare us for the denouement. So inevitable, so logical and at the same moment so terrible! Two and a half hours in front of us is just an unrealistically cool and positive picture, and then thirty minutes of pain and fear. A film with a logical but unpleasant ending.

Sites like that are why I have over 900 movies on my computer. I actually watched one within the last month or so. ::) My friend I ride ATVs with has a small TV with a built in DVD player, and some nights he sets it on the picnic table and we watch movies around the campfire. A few drinks, a good fire, and a movie or 2 is a great way to end the day. The guy who used to burn a lot of movies for them quit a few years ago, and I haven't burned very many. But last summer I bought an HDMI cable to plug my laptop into the TV, so I don't even have to burn DVDs anymore. I just transferred 2 or 3 dozen movies to my laptop via USB 3.0 SuperSpeed flash drive, and I have lots of choices for the year. I doubt we'll even watch half of them. But I have to spend more time trying to figure out which ones don't suck. I only have 5% free space on my desktop so I need to delete a lot of movies without watching them. I check the ratings at IMDb most of the time, but the ratings are badly skewed by people lying. There will be a lot of 10/10 ratings by the family of people involved with making the movie, or people they pay to give good reviews, I'm not sure which. And if you don't take the time to look at the negative reviews saying things like, what movie did you just see that I didn't, or, how could anyone rate this higher than a 3, and that high only because of the scenery, etc., you get suckered. There are certain movie companies that I see their name on and know not to waste my time on it. Asylum is a prime example.

The only thing stopping me from using my free movie pass to watch it was lack of transportation. My birthday gift "so large it would choke a horse" free bucket of popcorn expired Friday. I would have brought it home and ate it, and watched the movie with less distraction (and potential virus exposure). I was lucky enough to get my idiot brother to take me to the store on the way home from getting my stuff out of my truck. He was in such a big hurry I didn't buy much more than bread and cheese for the hamburgers in my freezer.

I watched Without Remorse this weekend. Amazon's production of the Clancy novel.

I don't think they did the novel justice but it wasn't a total waste. I would rate it about a 6 or 7 on a 10 scale. Action was good, plot fair. I would watch it again but would not "pay" to see it.

Here is a link to the IMDB preview.

Normally I would never watch a movie like this, but the misses wanted too.   It was very good.  We then watched the French original  version  the intouchables.  Whcih was actually better  despite thebsub titles.

This type of movie is not my cup of t but I did enjoy  it.

That's the kind of movie that I would be interested in, but I would see Metascore 42 from Metacritic.com and skip it, if I hadn't read this. Anything less than 50/100 automatically gets cut from the list, but now it's on the want to see list of movies. Annnd, I just looked at the user reviews at IMDb and it's off the list again. The first ten ratings are 2, 2, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 2, and 2 out of 10, and it continues like that. It sounds like it's really a 1.5/10 movie according to the users at IMDb, and a 4.2/10 by the critics. Either score is too low for me to watch it.

Watched 'Parasite' recently, and although I haven't actually seen any of the films it beat out for best picture I think it's probably deserved. I've loved all of Bong Joon-Ho's prior films for their uniqueness and absurdism and this was no exception. The best I've heard it described is as a more perfect version of Snowpiercer. Highly recommended.

Not a movie but a Seriers,  BOSCH.

SPOILER ALERT

Wrapped up watching the show's final season.   So good.  And Titus Welliver left it open for a new Series, possibly  Bosch, PI.  Or maybe center it around Maddie and how she progresses through LAPD while helping her daddy.

My only nit was when Maddie told Bosch she was joining the LAPD.  That could have been left unsaid, verbally.  He's a detective after all.

That's what makes online communities like this so interesting – the mix of genuine movie enthusiasts, seasoned contributors, and, yes, even a few newcomers.

And speaking of movies, it's always refreshing to hear recommendations from fellow film lovers. What's been catching your eye among the flicks playing in theaters (https://wealthofgeeks.com/movies-out-now/) lately? Personally, I'm on the lookout for some hidden gems or under-the-radar titles, so if you've got any suggestions, I'm all ears!
