Last night I won an auction for a Carcano carbine. My WWII collection continues to grow. What I have so far:

Top to bottom:
Garand
Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I
Mauser k98k
Arisaka Type 99
Mosin Nagant 91/30
The Arisaka is the only one I haven't fired. I don't trust it to be safe. All the others are for shootin' instead of lookin' at.
If a French MAS 36 finds its way home, that's OK, too. Updated photo when the new one arrives.

Unless there is something obviously wrong the Arisaka should be just as safe as any other WW II rifle.

7.7. I found it at a little gun shop for under $200. It was missing the spring and follower from the magazine, and the barrel looks like it has been repaired at some point. I'm okay with it being a wallhanger since ammo for it costs upwards of $3/round and pretty hard to find.

No mum. Monopod missing as well. It does still have the cool anti-aircraft rear sight.
The one that impressed me most to shoot was the Enfield. Maybe I like it better than the Garand (gulp). Can't believe I just wrote that.

I have noticed the price of Lee- Enfield has been going up over the past couple of years, now may be the time to get one. It is about the only other WWII rifle that interests me other than the Garand.

They are all going up in price rather rapidly. The most expensive was the Garand, which I bought from the Ohio CMP store for around $600, and the cheapest was the Mosin ($75 including tax).

That's a nice looking carbine. It looks so short compared to the full size rifles. It would be handy for hunting.

I was surprised by how small it is. My 10/22s are longer than it is.

Over on Youtube, and Full 30 CandRsenal have excellent video's on WWI era Carcano's and "Arisaka's".
They have your Carcano, but if it had a monopod and AA sights your Japanese rifle is probably a type 99 .
The videos are on the type 30 , 38 , and 38 and 44 carbines.
All of them seem to be vastly under rated, although the 6.5 cartridges were kind of anemic.

the Arisaka's have the type year (of Meijii's reign) marked on the top of the receiver... 38 should look like three stacked horizontal lines and something like this ) ( .... Japanese numerals are on the net....it's been 40 years since I was there

Then they throw in a curve by changing the system about the beginning of WWII.
Because the Meijii restoration was in 1868 But the Type 99 rifles had long come and gone by 1967 .
We're no better, -03 Springfield, Colt 1911, then M-1 Rifle, M1 Carbine.
The Russians seem to be the least confusing.

I don't know if the word "cute" applies to military rifles or not but if it does the carbine is cute. ;) The rifle looks unwieldy.

Really, check out CandRsenal.
Since all the bolt actions of WWII originated in the late 1800's and were left overs from WWI.
WARNING they haven't gotten to the 03 or Mosin Nagant, but they have about 3 hours each on the Enfields and Mausers broken up by model, same with the Carcano and Mannlicher/Steyr.
