He is safe, still in Japan. Doesn't know when he'll be back as Mearsk has changed the rules for 3rd engineers (now you need a PIC certification) and though he is fully qualified they cannot find a relief that is because of the rule change!
Of course they are watching the news on the pirates. If his ship goes through that area they get armed military on board as they ship military cargo (fuel). Said the BIG reason that most ships are unarmed is due to insurance regs! If you have guns on board it is VERY difficult and MUCH more expensive.
I didn't realize insurance companies were run by dumbocrats! But they must be. How else can you come up with logic that says "I will insure your ship and cargo unless you try to protect it." ???

Lloyd's of London suits. Making more sense now? I had some contact with those guys in a past job insuring offshore platforms...bunch of suits that act bad ass who are really childish, selfish kids living on an established business. They revel in silly pursuits off the clock. The English lost their empire when they lost their will...they were overrun with competing ideas from the new citizens who flooded in from their empire....and by their own version of gynocentric ideals which we have begun to embrace.
Dang Haz....you really know how to keep a guy stirred up.
Good thing he's on duty for defense fuels.

Tell Him we said Hi !

Thanks for the info on Deepwater. Glad he's safe and hope he get's to head home soon!!
-
Thanks for the update! I think it would be safe to say next time you talk to him you can let him know we all wish him the best.
On the insurance thing, a friend of mine that owns several banks explained to me that the ONLY reason his banks were posted "No Guns" was because if he didn't they would pull his insurance. And in his own words - "A banker can't operate without insurance."
-
Glad to hear that Deepwater is safe and sound. Maybe not sober but safe and sound ! :)
In case you get to speak to him again you might want to relay this important message from the President on the piracy issue !!!

Who's Deepwater?
Like blackwater only deeper . . . . .
He's a DRTV buddy who shipped out in the merchant marine (do they still call it that?) some months ago - seems like forever. Nice guy apparently, good poster when he gets to an internet port.

Once again I have a question. I was watching Anderson Cooper the other night on CNN. He seems as perplexed as I am as to why the companies don't just put trained security on board. He was saying to some insurance guy about the no guns thing, that he bought the argument against personal weapons because of fear of someone going postal or just a yahoo making things worse. But why no trained pro's who could even be left in life boat before the ship hit port? The insurance answer was that a lot of these ships (tankers) emited fumes that could go up if there were sparks. Now this seems sketchy because if the fumes were that bad you'd think the crew would all be dead or blown up by propane burners. I'm not going to argue though, because I know nothing about tankers and am damn sure not volunteering to go on deck and pop a few off to see whether I'm right. Your statement about military support on a fuel tanker, though seems to bear this out. Any thoughts?

Pegleg Pirates.

I saw a report the other night, can't quote the source but, they said that armed crew's are not allowed because some countries that these Maritime ships visit, ports of call and such, don't allow it. International law or some such dumba$$ thing...
Can't verify...
I recall DW saying that for one cruise last year, they did have some armed fellas aboard and he mentioned getting a chance to shoot a .50 cal...

I"M FINE, QUIT WORRYING!!!!
as you can see these retards can't hang with good ole trashy US merchant mariners. HA!!!! anyway, same company, same color vessel, etc... and we were very recently poised to go that route ourselves recently. as for carrying, it's all insurance reasons. I'm on a tanker, and yes there are times when any spark could be dangerous, but we have safeguards against vapors etc. so.... yes we can carry security personnel and have. but I agree that we need at least two officers onboard trained in handling weapons etc. to take care of these situations before they ever get aboard the ships. (or hire someone not afraid to shoot, you know...)
well, I believe this is the frst time they tried to take an American vessel, and boy did they screw it up! and the military, well, this ship is sailing under the flag of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA, any attack on her is an attack on our country and considered an act of war. why are we not going harder after these guys? Somalia gave permision to other countries to come ashore and chase these bastards down. are we going that route? anyway, I recently sent a video about piracy in the straits of Malacca, Indonesia, to Haz, hope he's watched it. you would be surprised at how many pirate attack occur every year. not all of them are reported either. just this last year there were 299 'reported' attacks. wow. I vote for firearms!!!!!!! it's cheper to hire someone to protect your vessel than to pay millions in ransom or losses due to lack of give a $#!^. ok, I'm done putting my two cents in.
DEEPWATER, Sasebo, Japan.

oh yeah... about not being aloud to have guns in certain countries. tough crap.. the guns do not leave the ship and while in port they are sealed with the country's official custom seals in either a secure room or a safe. we CAN carry. but as mentioned before, the insurance companies are run by lawyers and dumbocrats. when I say tough s#)^, it's for the host country. they have no say about how a ship sailing under the U.S. flag operates or protects itself. if they want the business (a ship this size is a LOT of business) they won't say anything anyway. screw the dirty rat bas.... well, you know what I mean.
-
Glad to have you back posting deepwater, you can be our "expert" as this pirate/hostage situation keeps going.
And the reg's that allow these thug/pirates to just exploit the opportunity.
Hell, even the French are getting tough.....

Arrrrrrghhh! You don't watch that crap regularly, do you?
Deepwater---If they ever board one of your ships you might want to think about starting an ear collection. Don't forget, if they are Muslim...to stick a piece of pork sausage in them before you ship them home. If I ever have the misfortune of having a mosque move in next to me or a bunch of muslims I'm going to have pot belly pigs as pets....there is power in pig s***.

Getting even further off track....you know people just don't get the power of pig s***. They stubbornly cling to the paradign that these people think just like the good old boys you grew up next to and want to "honor" their "quirks". Well, it isn't a quirk, it's a pathological way of life as in a lie is not a lie to an infidel or to meet their god's (little 'g' for old smuttyface) purposes. Sheeple are idiots....they just can't comprehend that someone can be genuine and lie at the same time...which is a big part of why we have lost our country to those lying dogs in political power right now.
Wanna have some fun...drop a role of Jimmy Dean's best surreptitiously in their food basket some time....oh lighten up...I would never do that and you should not either because that's a hate crime! I really don't want anyone dwelling on anything like that, it would make people feel isolated and unwelcomed.

LOL! Nice 'disclaimer', Ras. ;D

Glad to hear your doing well Deepwater. Hold fast and keep an eye on the horizon...

Power in pigs indeed. One of my bosses (at a good Quaker college no less) sugested that the best way to avoid a repeat of 9/11 was to put a pig on every airliner and require each passenger to down a pork rind whiskey shooter before boarding. ;D But on with the story. In Texas (and again I am amazed that this wasn't Florida) outside of Austin a small rancher had a mosque open up next door to him. Due to the the absurd lack of zoning laws in the state he had to put up with it. He wasn't bothered by the religion, just the increased traffic, bright lights for security and, oh yeah, the 5 am call to prayer. Being Texas, where armadillo races would draw a crowd (and no I'm not making that up) he decided to hold pig races. These are also a going concern in the Lone Star State, that I deeply miss. He was, according to the Drudge Report, where I got the story (caveat emptor, but in this case who cares, because its too funny) holding these every Friday night on the edge of his property closest to the mosque. The imam complained, but hey, no zoning for unincorpoated areas in Tx. ;D

Grappling hooks. There is a very cool article on slate.com about the pirates in the Malaca straits in Indonesia, which, until a couple of years ago was the hot bed of piracy. Basically the same MO but with a lot more subtlety. The idea was to pull along side a freighter quietly at night and run a hook equipped (dare I say tactical?) bamboo pole over the rail. Then the piraes would over power the crew, open the safe and any easy containers (amateurs!) and DiDi out of there. The reason it wasn't more serious was because they didn't have safe havens to hold ships hostage. Reason number 368 why a measured military response is necessary in Somalia.

We either need to change international maritime law to allow firearms on ships, or just inform these countries that enjoy our money that the money stops unless they allow our people to be armed aboard ship.

we often have muslims on board during discharges, and they get fed by our cook. we never tell them when they get pork from the food line.
anyway, I'm back! I'm at Haz's place now.
