Subject: Tactical Pants?

I have noticed several people on Michael's program wearing what I'd describe as light tan, cargo pocketed, "tactical pants".  Could you please share where such pants can be obtained?

I have worn 5/11 Pants for the last 2 1/2 years, every day pretty much, and now they are thread bare, starting to come apart, at the knee's and at the rear pockets where I keep large folding knives,, They are very comfortable, and loose fitting, I really like the knee  pad inserts, in my business it really helps. I carry a J frame smith in the right pocket, and this pant, let's this carry type work. My regrets are my black  pants turned to gray quickly.. but after that they stayed that way, My worn pants will pass muster anywhere, SORRY TAB, you won't pick me out of  a crowd.  It just looks right...............

I have worn 5.11 pants before they were "Tactical". They are comfortable and allow me to carry stuff conveniently and have access when I need it. Carry my wallet in the lower left pocket so that I do not have to sit on it, can get to it while driving while wearing seat belts.

I wear them all the time, even with a jacket and tie. They just make sense. Don't care about frivilous fashion and whatever is "in" at the moment

Some of mine are approaching ten years of service. Good value for the money!

I think I need to start a thread on my tactical shoelaces. We have discussed tactical rifles and carbines, tactical knives, tactical vests, and now tactical pants. My really cool 6.12 tactical shoelaces integrate well with my tactical socks, which in turn are made by the same folks - years of experience in the LEO business BTW, so they know what they're doing - who make my tactical shorts.

To bring this one back on topic:
Wearing "tactical" pants is not only about looking cool. It´s about having the ability to carry items you should have in your "first line". I borrowed this from the outstanding LMS Defense Blog:

Quote
What's in your pockets?
If you're like most of us, you have some sort of emergency trauma kit somewhere in your shooting gear. It makes the trip to all your range sessions, competitions, and any classes you take to become a more skilled shooter.

You probably also have a small pile of gear you stuff in your pockets each day as you go out into the world and conduct your day to day business....Pistol, holster, spare magazine or 2, small flashlight, cell phone, pager, wallet, car keys. Notice something missing here?
That life saving equipment you make sure to always have around firearms is no where to be found. You may have a first aid kit in your vehicle, but that does you about as much good as leaving it at home should you be out in public and away from your rig (anyone remember the Tacoma Mall shooting?)

The missing item here is a compact kit containing the means to stop severe bleeding. An adult can die in 2-3 minutes from an uncontrolled femoral artery bleed. By carrying a few low cost items, you can greatly increase your chances of surviving a traumatic injury.

I used to wear these pants when I was in high school back in the 70's.  They were in style and called cargo pants.  Now that I have a "professional" job I really miss them ... anyone know of a suit maker that would put cargo pockets on their suit pants?

In reference to the fading, my mom was an Extension Educator and Home Ec teacher, and she taught me many years ago to re-dye my faded pants (most common in black).  A box of RIT dye and an afternoon of a little attention will have them looking brand new.

Sarcasm is only one of the fine services we offer here.  ;D ;D

I have worn cargo pants for years (before they were tacti-cool). I just really don't consider them to be tactical so much as utilitarian. I've found the older I get...the more crap I carry around with me.

Most of the clothing you see on The Best Defense is BLACKHAWK Warrior Wear. BLACKHAWK is the official apparel sponsor for the show and was kind enough to kit everyone out in pants, shirts, boots, jackets, and shells.

The tan pants that Rob wears in many of the episodes are actually BLACKHAWK's I.T.S. pants--integrated tourniquet system. They actually feature tourniquets pre-positioned both above and below the knees on both legs. Designed by a trauma surgeon with extensive experience in Afghanistan, they are a lifesaving tool that is rapidly gaining popularity among our troops and other armed professionals.

I have routinely worn for the past three years Woolrich Elite Series cargo pants and could care less about the look, tactical or otherwise.  They are the most practical and comfortable pants I have ever owned and perfect for CCW, especially if you like to carry two guns.  I carry my 1911 on my right hip in an IWB Summer Special holster and my J frame in my right pocket in a Mika pocket holster...the draw out of a pocket with these pants is perfect.  I also carry a speedloader in my left pocket and a Wilson ETM spare magazine in the left thigh pocket.  My cell phone in the right thigh pocket and wallet in the roomy rear right pocket.  There are more pockets that I have never needed but its nice to know you have additional alternatives.   Whenever I switch to jeans I always feel uncomfortable trying to duplicate the same set up, so I always resort back to the Woolrich pants.

My wife absolutely hates the cargo pants look but I disregard the comments as nothing comes close for comfort and peace of mind for CCW.  The version I have is the heavier weight cotton fabric and I have alternated between two pairs for the past three years and the pants look like they are a day old.  These pants will outlive me.

Here's where I got mine....they are a steal for the quality you get.  Wonderful folks to deal with as well.

JOKING...JOKING!!!

I've worn cargo pants since college, especially when I started traveling obsessively. My Sweetie (and apparently all women) absolutely despises them. When I started SHOOTING GALLERY, I decided to wear the old line of Sig tactical clothing, for which I took a certain ration of dookey from other gunwriters, hosts, etc. One went as far as to say on one of his shows, "Who would wear that silly crap in the Real World?" Now he does, every week, on his show and in every public appearance...everyone wears the stuff and now I pretty much don't.

While I don't think it's as huge an issue as I've seen on some other forums, the essence of concealed carry remains blending in. If you dress all 5.11 drag complete with rigger belt, a set of black Oakley jump boots, Ray-Ban mirror shades and a black baseball cap, might it be possible that rather than hiding in plain site you're telegraphing a lot of things about yourself that you don't, or shouldn't, want to telegraph?

A few months back a big gun trainer noted in his newsletter that at his first "tactical" conference, everyone looked like they'd come to sit around the big fireplace at Blackwater HQ...by his third conference, it looked like a small convention of building contractors. "Better," he said. Carhardt and Duluth Trading had replaced heavy duty contractor casual.

As it happens, I was at a party last night with several law enforcement types. They were dressed all Carhart, and looked exactly like most of the other men at the party.

Here's a thought...there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying your clothes from Blackhawk, EOTAC or 5.11...I've found them to be better made and far more durable than consumer copies from Columbia or even REI, where I do most of my shopping. IMHO, what you do want to avoid is a costume or uniform, anything that makes you stand out in a crowd or would cause someone's eyes to pause on you. Costumes and/or uniforms (although in the context we're using here, they are the same thing) stand out, that's why people like cops wear uniforms. Check it out next time you're in a crowd...your eyes will linger on people in even a faux or defacto uniform.

OK. This discussion made me reminisce about that long forgotten period in men's fashion- parachute pants!

Check this out:

Would these be "tacti-cool" or what!  I think that is where the tactical pants came from, really.....  ;)  ;D

Michael hit on something I've noticed over the past few years. When I see someone in tac-pants and vest, I start suspecting. If I see the Wilderness tactical belt, I know for sure......

Back before "Parachute pants" I wore The Camo utility Trousers I had been issued in the Marines,They were comfortable, Had lots of pockets, and the adjustable waist band allowed for long underwear during winter. When they wore out I quit wearing that type of Clothing because all I could find were Camo or Black that looked like exactly what they were, bits of uniform. Might have to revisit the design with more casual type designs and colors being offered.

I've worn my "concealment" vest to work after having shot a match. Most people commented that they thought I'd just been fishing. When you live on Lake Michigan, this kind of dress in pretty much the "norm". I think that we, as defense enthusiast, read more into this wardrobe than the general public does.

Probably get surplus Camo  and some of that RIT dye for a total of $21.50.

Get mine from Cabela's. Very durable pants...heavy, but pliable and comfortable. They have had them on sale at times for as little as $15. No cargo pockets on this model but they do have the same type with extra pockets. I use a 1 3/4" heavy leather belt (like a Galco Fancy Stitch) from Classic Old West Styles. I can hide my Glock 27 in a SERPA well and two spare mags in mt offside pocket.
As others have mentioned, my appearance would probably say 'contractor' or in some areas 'farmer', depending on whether I have on a cap or a Resistol.

I wear a variety of "fishing" pantss from Bass Pro Shops. They LOOK like sportsman's pants with out the tacticool look. Lots of usefull pockets, loops, and various flaps and zippers. Never had a problem carrying CCW with a Glock 33, Waltjher PPK,. and two spare magazines each. (The Glock has full sized model 31 mags for spare in a left front deep pocket.) Being a land surveyor allows me to look "outdoorsish" without standing out.

Along that line, I just received 2 pair of EOTAC "discreet" tactictal pants, one in denim and one in khaki.  So far I like them a lot.

Please, please stop buying that stuff... You guys have raised the prices and made it harder to find.( atleast the "real" stuff, the knock offs are easy to find)

Some of us have to live in that stuff... beleave me, as soon as I'm done working it comes off.

Guide Gear 8-pocket Carpenter Jeans

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=358088

The pocket on the left holds my cellphone. The two pockets on the right hold my knife and keys. This leaves the front pockets to hold my money and my gun. I cut the hammer loop off. Hard to beat at $13-16 dollars. Not very tactical however. Or are they?

Et te, Don?  I was hoping this thread would just unravel quietly.   :P

Actually, if you had left the hammer loop on, they would provide even nicer camo - blends in almost anywhere these days.

Cargo pants are fine if you're into that kind of thing. It's when they are emblazoned with the 5.11 or Blackhawk logos/tags, then it comes across as posing. I sure don't consider anyone wearing 5.11 at the mall a real operator. Maybe a mall ninja, but not a real operator.

Did I already tell this story? Female friend went on a date with a USAF Col. He told her - first date mind you - that he was a covert operator and that there were 2 other operatives watching his back (I think he actually said watching his "6"). She never understood why it took me so long to stop laughing when she told me this.

Posers!   >:(

I don't know about this cargo stuff. Here in sunny south Florida, my neighboring burg of Riviera Bch (it aint' either) decided to go on an anti-gang binge. One of the items on the agenda was cracking down on the sagging, baggy pants thing. If your underwear shows, its a $100 ticket for a first offence, 30 days for a second, All you middle aged guys with 1911s, extra mags, first aid kits etc. are bound to be in trouble I think here's a loophole for a plumbers union card. ;D

I wore them back before they were tactical, back when they were for hiking and rockclimbing.  They are too darn practical not to wear.

There is a fine line between not looking like an easy target and looking like the FIRST target to take out.

I have a serious suggestion on this, Sams Club Makers Mark Jeans (their house brand). The fit a little baggier than I like, but not so bulky as cargo. They also go about $15 dollars and are just good as any other jean.

I actually recommend buying them raw... no "customization" and breaking then in yourself.... I used to buy 4-6 pairs of jeans a year, now I buy one for under $250. Its the best denim you can get in the US and I wear them 6 or 7 days a week...

I'm more comfortable in a pair of jeans most of the time. When I actually want the functionality of the Blackhawk pants, I wear them and I do notice a difference when certain demographics see them. There are times when the pockets come in handy and they are somewhat more comfortable when driving or flying for 8 hours straight. I know a lot of guys who switched to Carhart type jeans because they blend in better, but have more room and extra pockets. Eotac now offers denim as well, though I haven't worn them. I was turned onto J-shop a few years ago and haven't looked back.

A lot has been made about outfitting with the vest, the pants, the boots, the whole image package, and I don't deny looking at these things as well, as a uniform of sorts. I would like to add some thoughts about using camouflage
but not the earthy woodies type. Neighborhood camo, a man I used to shoot with, was a professional photographer, He wore a vest everyday and at the range for our tactical S/D shoots, the vest had a big KODAK,  patch on the back, like 12''x4'', and a smaller one on the front breast, matching Kodak or Cannon hat, and you looked at these things not him 1st, I do wear a uniform, the aforementioned 511 pants, but an automotive 2 pocket button up shirt with my name and company name on it, the pants are well worn, and I wear a flashlight holster, with a well worn streamlight stinger, I use it everyday and it looks like it. It does not look like a shooter/LE, armchair commando uniform.

I need to take a picture of a IWB holster I made, the innovation I had for it, above being a holster for a 5" N frame, was I glued and stitched a Levi badge, on the portion of the holster that went over the belt, so it looked like I slid my belt through that leather badge that comes on the jeans.

Point is, remove the things that draw attention, add things that take the attention somewhere else, or explain to the casual observer, "oh", that's what he or she does, and that's ok. My fanny pack is a Bianchi and it is screaming yellow and red, looks yuppie as hell, and that's the point.
