Title: 475 ODIN
Post by: DianneB on July 17, 2018, 07:22:11 PM
Here is a first look at our new 475 ODIN, still in development. Designed to feed through an AR-10.  There is no parent case.

Barrels are being made, so we’ll be able to have some real numbers soon.

ODIN is the top case. 458 SOCOM is in the middle, and 308 below that.

Here it is next to a 6.5 Creedmore case

Nice.  How many fps will you pick up over the SOCOM with your 475?

They are meant for two different rifles. 458 SOCOM is for the AR 15, 475 ODIN is for the AR 10.
It’s going to be a lot.

Well, just when I was thinking being impressed with women who SHOOT firearms was becoming commonplace, along comes DianneB.    :D

There's nothing commonplace about DB.  She worked on C5s in the USAF.  BIG is in her DNA.

And a bit cagey as well.  I'm going to be hanging on a thread until I found out how much "a lot" means.

ODIN....I can see a tough looking Viking warrior emblazoned on an AR-10 receiver now.

Speed, actually lack thereof, was always something with the 458 SOCOM that made me less interested in it.  So, I pursued other things of shooting interest.  My perception was, and perhaps incorrectly, that the 458 was a competitor to the 44 mag I already had.  Now yes, I could run it in an AR body, et. al. with a new upper I got that.  But in my mind if I really wanted to step up to a slugger I'd go with the 45-70 or my 450 Marlin.

So, something in between that in performance...more than the 458 and equal to or less than a full power 45-70 in a semi-auto AR-10 pattern is interesting.

I’m being a bit vague about the answer until we get it to the desert and test it and validate our calculations about how fast it should be.  At 800 yards, the calculations say it should still be going 1,017 FPS, for example.

If you guys can pull that off it may be the pre-eminent running hog stopper.

We are thinking about changing the name to avoid a copyright issue with another company who registered ODIN for ammunition even though they don’t currently make any...

Maybe  Mjolnir  if that is available...

It's a mouthful, but powerful

How about .475 Gungnir, the name Odin's spear?

Personally I never liked the looks of severely rebated rims, even if people say they function well. The .284 Winchester looks good with the rim only 0.028" smaller than the head, and the .450 Bushmaster based on it seems to work well enough. The .458 SOCOM with it's rim rebated 0.068" apparently works too, but there must be a limit where it's just too much of a difference in diameter. Or is it just a case of me judging a book by its cover?

Does it have to be a Norse name?

Hog Hammer would be a great name if Remington wasn't already using it.

OK, you guys make my shoulder hurt just reading about these cannons... I've been working the last two years to reduce the recoil of an AR9mm carbine with a 145 power factor  :)

an older friend that just passed away built dangerous game rifles for taking the big 5 in Africa.... 375/404 Jeffrey improved... he got 70 loaded rounds per pound of powder (100 grain charge)... I shot one... it laid the grass down in front of me for about 10yds... I'm sure I flinched it a little, but the cinder block exploded with the Barnes solid

Ranger Dave... pretty cool... an other friend had a Hamilton Bowen 500 Linebaugh on a Ruger Bisley frame... same results with a cinder block   ;D

Any progess?

I saw this online and it reminded me of this thread. ODIN - Organization of Democratic Intelligence Networks. It's a spy agency from the Archer TV series.

Awesome. I keep staring at the pics. What's the magazine capacity? If it's over 5 rounds it would need to be blocked at 5 for hunting here in Michigan, and some other places too I believe.

8 rounds in the magazine

Could a block be placed between the spring and the follower, similar to a plug in a shotgun?

We can make you a 5 round magazine, no problem

8 rounds is pretty good. I didn't think it would hold that last one. I started thinking, what could someone use a .475 for here? It would be overkill for black bears, especially since on average they weigh about as much as I do. The best thing I can think of would be to find an area with a piggy problem. I know we have them somewhere in the state.

I do have a hog problem.  And...I keep a watchful eye for black bear when I'm back in the country.  One of the guys killed one that weighed in at 650 lbs just two miles from the place....

Post by: Big Frank on January 14, 2019, 11:04:30 PM
:o  That's a BIG bear. The average is only about half of that.

Yeah, it was huge.  An electrician buddy zeroed it out a bit ago.  He's taken 15 bears from the same tree and another dozen plus within a 1/2 mile or so of there.  He guided an Outdoor Channel host...to be unnamed...who got one around 850 lbs about 12 miles from the new place.  There's a myth Arkansas has only little black bears no larger than 200 lbs.....it's a myth.
