Been working my ass off.    Just spent 80k on a used cnc router, been putting that too work.  Building my new home, when I can find a few hours.  Then there is the government contract( that I bought the cnc for)   which is great $$$$, but the paper work is a full time job.   I need to higher 7 people like last month, can't find any one that wants too work and can pass a background/drug test.  I kid you not all of the skilled labor I have I imported from ca.  Its like no one understands that time is money here.   I qm sorry, but a crew of 4needs to be able to frame a 1400 sq home in 3 days max.  The guys up here it was tqking 2 weeks.  Hell me and my formen did it in 2 days and all we had was 1 labor punking wood for us.    I have 19 homes too build. All of them are the same floor plan(some are reversed).  Only reason I am here now is I am waiting on home depot too load my drywall onto my trailer.  Guess who is hanging that this weekend?  Yep, should have been already tapped, but so far behind in just farming its not even funny.

Any skilled tradesmen want too come up here and work, shoot me a pm.   $35/hour+    this will be the last track I build for awhile, the lack of skilled labor is a real issue.

I'm here at least once or twice a day except when I'm out of town, which is mostly holiday weekends when I ride my ATV. In the parts of the forum that I read I don't think there were any posts at all for 2 days or maybe 3. I know a lot of people are on face***k and don't come here anymore, and some people are just too busy working. This place has always been more of a community than many other sites but it seems to be dying off. Tell the last one to leave to turn the lights off. Now someone please do something to get sent to the corner. It will help liven things up.   ;)

PS: After taking another look it seems like no one has been on here (in the sections I read) for 5 days. That's just sad.

We sold off our company's assets and we're in transition helping the new owners.  Whilst doing that I'm trying to catch up on 5 years of neglect at the house and trying to find a new vocation that is not as brutal as the oilfield.  However, I'm off to Dallas next week to setup the new oilfield company with my partners as a primary gig.

Doing the groundwork to build a storage building business and RV storage business.  I can't believe the margins on that....they pay for themselves in 3-4 years.  Sounds like retirement to me.

So...Tab, I'll soon be pouring concrete and putting together metal buildings.  If you have built storage units to you have a favorite metal supplier?  I'm building these for myself and I want them to last without having to spend a lot of maintenance $$$$'s in the future.

I check in daily, just don't always have anything to blather about.

I'd suggest moving the group to FB, but it would come with restrictions.  Free speech isn't, over there.  We'd have to be careful about offending people.   Even in a closed group, anti's will join so that they can then report us to FB and shut us down.  Also, even in a closed group, any talk about selling firearms is forbidden.

I too have been very busy at work.  Yesterday was one of my few days that I didn't go in.  And with the upcoming cataract surgeries I may be very scarce the rest of this month.

I had a Facebook account for little while and it was just a big waste of time. People I haven't seen in years or even decades buying me virtual drinks but not communicating with me, and inviting me to time killers like FarmVille. It didn't take me long to close my account but someone hacked it and re-opened my account and then I closed it again. I've never  regretted not being on there anymore.

And I forgot to mention the time wasted sorting through friend requests that were mostly from people I don't even know. This place is a community of like-minded individuals but Facebook is open to every idiot in the whole world.

I still check in mostly every day, sometimes several times. I prefer this to FB, but admittedly FB is instant, and closer to real-time communication.....which can be helpful at times but a nuisance when everyone around you has their phones reacting every time someone else comments. I refuse to use my phone for FB.

I do miss our (often long) open discussions on here.

Same with Gabe Suarez, Ed Head, M'ette, etc.

BINGO!

Here we can discuss and cuss.  We can hash things out, and we can drift for fun.  On FaceBook there are always others ripping things apart, or not understanding the game being played when they interfere.  That is the joy of being here:  It is like a table of friends in the corner of the bar.  The rest of the bar (internet) is out there, but our table (DownRangeTV) is having its own party.

The only real reason I haven't ditched FB is because of the easier access to some family and close friends that live away from me. It's just easier than emails, and I don't do skype or facetime etc.

I am in one cast iron cooking/coffee chat group that has a low number of members who genuinely seem to be a good group of folks who get along without the usual BS found in FB groups (one of the admins is friends with Marshal and M'ette and doesn't put up with crap). They remind me of the core group on here.

I have been out for over a week with a series of nasty colds that I still cannot seem to kill. Been over 20 years since I went to the Dr. for a cold. The g/f went into ICU and emergency surgery last Tuesday with cold/infection.  While out of ICU now, still in isolation as they cannot figure out what the infection IS. So, I will probably still be sparse for a while.

There is nothing I cannot cook with cast iron!

I let my ex have the smallest, least useful cast iron skillet of a 3 skillet set when we got divorced. The biggest one I have is so well seasoned it's almost non-stick. It's solid black and when I'm done frying a steak or pork chop I put some water in it and let it set. When I'm done eating I wash it with a dish cloth and warm water with no soap or cleaner of any kind. I rinse with hot water and wipe it down good with a paper towel and it's all set for the next time. Frying meat is about all I ever use it for.

Serious drift on this thread...

But, I do believe cast iron is quite possibly the best surface for cooking almost anything--especially items that require frying.

I have three cast iron pans:  a large skillet; a medium sized skillet; and a grill pan (one with the raised ridges that leaves grill marks on the beast or fowl being cooked).  The skillets have been with me for years and are as black as a IRS agent's heart.  The grill pan is getting there.  You just can't beat them for making bacon, searing a steak, frying spuds or making cornbread.

One of the skillets gets used almost every Sunday for making a breakfast fritatta (spuds, red/yellow bell pepper, some form of sausage or meat, eggs and cheese).  Gets started on the stove top and stuck into the oven to finish.  And nothing sticks to the pan that can't be removed with a quick swipe of a paper towel.  If something does happen to stick, a quick wipe with water and kosher salt then a rinse cleans it up nicely.  A final wipe with peanut oil and it goes back into the cupboard for next week.

I call it frontier Teflon.

Indeed it is, and yes he is very knowledgeable about a variety of subjects. He and I agree on a great many things, especially the over abundance of cast iron myths (mainly seasoning techniques) being propagated by mainstream cooking icons like Martha Stewart.

I worked in a big box store (Lowe's) during a career change a few years back.  I stumbled on how to successfully get a job there.  I've counselled a number of people on how to do this and it's worked every time.

Fill out the manual application form, not the on-line thing.   Ask for the store manager.  Not the acting or assistant SM, but the actual SM.  You may have to come back later it he's not on-duty.   Give him the application, look him in the eye and say,  "I'm willing to work, whatever shift, whatever department and  whatever job you assign me.  I'll show up eager, on-time and sober every day."

Alf... for many years the Women's Junior Service League in our area put on a "reality store" at each of the local high schools for seniors...it was directed primarily to those students planning on direct entry into the work place... they could choose their hourly pay rate, and then move from table to table that had direct challenges for them to decide... pick their car...pick their apartment... select insurance.. stop by the "wheel of fortune" and spin it, and it had titles like... you are going to have a baby... I need new tires... they shut off my electricity... and finally stop by the tally table, where all the monthly premiums, taxes and other charges were deducted... I was walking through the media center during one of these programs, and a couple of former students called me over with a question... "who is this FICA and why is it taking my money?"

another incident was once when the question of income taxes was raised by my 9th graders... I commented that I had just paid x thousand dollars in taxes... and their comment was "but you get it all back" and my answer was "NO, I just paid x thousand dollars in taxes... and their comment was "YES, but you get it all back, don't you?"

I don't "modernize" very easily. I have zero use for any social media. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. I've heard too much negativity about all of them. I really wouldn't know what to say or do if I did. And I never have, and never will set foot in a Starbucks. Somehow spending $5 bucks for a cup of "coffee" that tastes like a milk shake just doesn't appeal to me. Or does wasting a 1/4 tankful of gas, waiting for the 23 cars ahead of me to get to the "drive thru". Hell, I can't even pronounce half the crap they advertise on their menu.

Every morning I make a pot of Folgers for a few cents, have a couple of big cupfull's while I come here, wake up, and check out what's happening news wise, then start my day. I'm really adapting well to the retired, laid back lifestyle. I can't believe it's been 2-1/2 years already. It seems like as many months. I really admire guys like TAB. I get tired just reading about his day!

Today I'll hit the treadmill, shower, and head out to Sportsman's Warehouse to see if they have anything I can't live without. On Monday mornings except for the help, I'm about the only guy in the joint. Then I've got a bucket full of .223 brass that needs attention. Now that it's getting a bit too hot to go to the range, (it hit 101 yesterday), I'll most likely get it prepped and reloaded. I bought a new orbital sander to sand and re stain my picnic table. But I'm not past the, "thinking about it" stage yet. Maybe next month.

I might be able to see using it to contact people you've been out of touch with for decades. But even then I can't really think of anyone I miss that much.

Facebook is worthless...  I love you guys and gals but Facebook can be addictive in all the wrong ways.  It's a marketing tool in the guise of a social network!

It's sucked me in three times!  Never again...

I can't argue that. It can turn into a real time-burglar.

I might be able to see using it to contact people you've been out of touch with for decades. But even then I can't really think of anyone I miss that much.

That was the main reason I joined, contacting family and close friends that lived out of state (it was easier and more instant than emails, and I hate talking on the phone).
Later it was handy to keep folks updated when my wife was sick.

That reminds me of this REO tune from 30 years ago.

FB is just like any other tool.
If you can't use it responsibly it isn't the inanamate objects fault.

Except FB is not just like other tools.  My hammer, drill, refrigerator, pistols, rifles, car, etc. do not track my actions, give my information to companies that want to divest me of my money, or allow nefarious individuals to steal my identity.  FB is simply not worth either the aggravation or the risk.

Sorry, Tom.  I've gotta call BS on that one.

The fact is the more you stay off of these huge social media websites, the less of a risk you run becoming a victim of identity theft. Simply because you are not providing as much exposure. Compare how many hits this forum gets to Facebook. We're a drop in the bucket in comparison. And banks and financial institutions that handle your money have a much higher grade of identity protection than places like Facebook do. Even places like Amazon have very high grades of identity theft protection in place. If they didn't no one would risk shopping there.

I use FB for "promotion" of my music events. I have a personal page and a band page.
Anything the band puts out we all push on our personal pages and it gets the word out.
It's really the most effective thing out there at the moment. AND it sucks.
It is what it is but if you're promoting something it's pretty much essential right now.

I spend time on FB most every day.  Mostly checking in on Family, Friends, Brothers from the Army and People I am interested in.  Doesn't take much time if you know what the BS looks like and how to find the good stuff (funny they took away the 'Friends' filter but I use the Most Recent the same way).

I have been bouncing jobs since last summer, spent 5 months with an hour drive to and from work (better that the 1 1/4 hour minimum commute but I sat at a computer all day so it was easy to jump on DRTV).  Now I am 5 minutes from the house and have my own desk out in the Shop where I get to build cool automation like the paint robots for CeraKote  8)

If you want to use FaceBook without all the junk they add, do a search for F.B. Purity in the "Add-Ons" of your browser,You can customize FB to only show what you want without all the extraneous BS
