Title: Things you can't buy anymore but may find on eBay......
Post by: Rastus on January 08, 2017, 07:24:06 PM
eBay is a source of old products no longer on the shelf for whatever reasons.

Here are things I bid or bought from eBay that you can't find in the store any longer:

Octagon soap

6-12 Insect repellant....a really, really good thing to have.  Pretty fair amount of that out there you may want to check it out.  It's in my bugout kits.

Insect spray with DDT

A pound of powdered DDT to mix with water for garden spray use (I really wish I had gotten this to save some time in the future).  This stuff just works...I know it hurts the birds but I'm assuming new old stock is grandfathered in???  I wish I had some...my dad was powdered with it nearly his entire stint in the Pacific in WWII and lived into his 80's.

I remember seeing 6-12 insect repellent at home when I was a kid. I don't know if I ever used it. Wikipedia says this about it - "Ethylhexanediol, also known as Rutgers 612 or "6-12 repellent," discontinued in the US in 1991 due to evidence of causing developmental defects in animals." I'll stick with DEET.

Yeah...yeah....yeah...I know.  Everyone I know heavily used it when I grew up.  That DEET crap is next to worthless....I'll take my chances...   :o

Chlordane.    I bought 20# of it before it left the shelves ~'75.   Finally used it all up.

How 'bout Mercurochrome and Merthiolate..... I thought they were gone from the market, but you can get it also.....from ebay to Amazon and even CVS on one of them.

I wonder if it's the 'original' formulation?

Pathetic! Who would buy a stupid box?

Shoot, collectors of "things" will sometimes pay big money for original packaging of things long out of production. I saw where one idiot paid hundreds of dollars for an original box that a Superman doll came in.

Price Smith & Wesson or Colt boxes sometime.
Paper products gain value because they only print just so many and they start perishing from the day they leave the shop.

Merthiolate.....
I wonder if it's the 'original' formulation?

It is not the original formula.  Originally, Merthiolate contained mercuric oxide in an alcohol solution.  This stuff has Benzylkonium chloride as the active ingredient.  No where near as effective as a bactericide.

For many years, the U.S. has had a ban on any medicine with mercury in it--especially if it happened to work exceptionally well.  The ban included mercuric oxide ophthalmic ointment which was one of the only things that cured styes in kids and, of course, Merthiolate and Mercurochrome.

Merthiolate had an alcohol base  that burned on scratches and scrapes.  Kids hated it.  Mercurochrome had a distilled water base and caused no pain upon application.  Of course, it didn't work nearly as well as Merthiolate.

The really painful old school bactericide is still available.  Tincture of Iodine is strong enough to actually chemically burn the skin if too much is applied.  It's also good for darkening the etching in silver jewelry to make it stand out better.  It also works on aluminum as I recall.

I offer the above for nothing more than as interesting side notes and because I'm POd I can't get mercuric oxide ophthalmic ointment.  I hate intrusive government.

My fourth and fifth summers my great-grandma painted my skint-up appendages with so much Merthiolate that I looked like a carrot.

I still have some Sierra Bullets in the original green paper boxes with the metal reinforced corners. This was back when they were in Santa Fe Springs, California. Now everything comes in plastic.
