Title: One of my biggest pet pives
Post by: TAB on July 12, 2020, 09:17:05 PM
If you sold a car/ truck several days ago, for the love of god, take down the damn ad.

I am looking for a beater ranger.  Something  i can drive back and forth to the porperty when i dont need my diesel.   You would think they are made of gold. I am sorry, your early 2000s 4 banger 5 speed with 250k miles is not worth 6k...

The Ford Ranger should never have been discontinued. There was, and still is a very large market for it. The "new" Ranger is overpriced for what it is. You might just as well get a F-150. And the prices of those are getting insane as well. They put a big engine with a supercharger in this one, and it stickers for over $93,300.00!...... (1:40 in the video). And you still have a 1/2 ton truck, nothing more. Insane.

Sold my Edge last year for $1200.  16 years in New England takes its toll but I did 90% of the work myself.  Lady got a steal...took less than a day to sell it!

If your heart is set on dumping $80K to $90K into a new truck. For that kind of money you can get a 4 WD 3500 Series Ram, Ford, or Chevy Crew Cab, long bed, Turbo Diesel Dually in the highest trim package offered. And you'll at least have a truck that will pull 30,000 pounds all day long. These things are nothing but high powered grocery getters.

And a substantial amount of them will be wrecked in short order. That's what happened to a lot of the SRT-10 pickups, with the 10 cylinder Viper engine in them. Kids would get them sideways, and over they would go, because of the high center of gravity. The whole damn concept is wrong.

The carmakers dropped all of the mid-sized trucks (except the Tacomas), and the market has always been hot for used ones, except maybe the S-10, it's a Chevy, so . . . .

I looked at used Dakotas a while back and was appalled at the asking prices for a 10-year old truck. The new ones are also huge compared to the older ones, and that includes the Tacomas. They are damn near full-sized now.

PS: my pickup was an 2002 F350 XLT Lariat bought used in '03 with 72k miles on it. But with the 7.3 Powerstroke, that kind of mileage is little more than a break-in mileage. I paid $28k plus my S-10 quad cab.

The new ranger  is very nice, but not 23k nice.  Its only a few thousand more and you get an f150.

They should have never dropped the ranger.

RANGER:  Plus it comes now with a 2.3 Liter (that's about 140 cubic inches) engine that works like a golf cart with auto stop-start technology.  And I thought my 4.0L was a small engine.

And $23K is probably the 2WD version!

If the 2L turbo is an option, it’s very, quick!  Zero to sixty in 6 seconds...

The smallest motor I own is in my excuvator  at 5.9 L. Only 205 hp, but 550 ftlbs of torque.

I do need  to buy a generator as they all went away when i sold the biz.   Not needed one yet as my truck has a under hood unit.  That works just fine for what i need at the moment.

TAB's comment reminded me of a question I recently had.
Why , when they are looking for a murder victim do they always bring in an excavator ?
They got planted by a guy with a shovel, how deep do they think he went ?      ;D

Speed would be one reason.  But also if they're not 100% sure "where" they might have to more digging than just straight down.

Plus if I were digging up something I wasn't sure about the condition of, I'd dig around to isolate it then slowly remove the dirt directly on top of it. Sort of archaeology style.  Might be evidence on top.

But, hey, all I know about it is what I see on TV shows.

Regulations.....

At a place I worked I  noticed that in the plant, they had 2  mounting brackets  for each  fire extinguisher.

I ask why and was  told that the bottom one was for the OSHA inspection that required a low mounting so the extinguisher would not be a hazard at head  level.

The high one was for the Fire  Marshal who required they be mounted high so that they would be easy to spot and access if needed  for a fire.

Switched which one  was used depending upon who was coming to inspect.

i have installed 2 sets of hinges on restaurants, so they could swap the doors from in swing to out swing or vv.   Department of health said one way, the fire marshal said the other way.

Edit, dual swing doors were not allowed

At my old venue there's a 100# chandelier hanging in the lobby by its zip cord electrical wire.  I asked and the fire marshal AND the building inspector both said that was acceptable for an architectural fixture. But in the theatre I had a 4oz controller box  next to a smart light.  I couldn't just leave it setting on the I beam with both its electrical cable and control cables as a safety.  No.o.o.o.o.  I had to clamp it to the beam and add a safety cable.  The building will collapse but that 4oz box isn't moving.  Meanwhile, after 20yrs of hanging by a thread, the chandelier fell while maint was changing lamps.  Fortunately no one was hurt.

Speaking of peeves.

The gas company replaced all gas lines a while back, and before they turned the gas back on they inspected my furnace and water heater.  I was gigged for not have a water sump, a tee, in the gas line going to the WH.  I promised I'd fix it and they turned the gas on anyway.

So I thought to myself, why is that a problem? Obviously at one time it must have been, hence the code.  But why don't WH manufacturers make gas burners and pilot lights that can get digest any water in the line and continue to operate?

Turns out they have solved the problem. I looked up my WH model installation instructions and they neither specify nor recommend a tee.  There is one line in the instructions that says if code requires it then you should put one in.  I was all set to add the fittings this summer but have decided to shelf them until the next WH replacement.

The instructor that taught all of the business law and other legal courses when I was at the University of Minnesota explained grades to us:

A Students - They become professors and never practice law
B Students - They become judges after a mediocre practice
C Students - Party ... A LOT, run successful practices, and make large sums of money doing what we don't want to do for ourselves

He was a C student, a JAG officer for eight years, was a major partner in a large law firm, and made millions helping families with probate.  As the former legal counsel for the Minnesota Funeral Directors Association he would help funeral homes collect payment for funerals.  There is nothing that can be attached when a funeral goes unpaid.  Families would claim that everything was tied up in the estate, and that it would not be available until the surviving spouse died, or the family could come to an agreement.  He would then go to the public record, check on probate, and if probate hadn't been filed, he would file it.  Six weeks later the Court would rule, and 95% of the time he, or his firm, would be appointed Personal Representative.

I was the c and d student until college, where i got straight  a's

I litterely  did not care. I would do the work not turn it in.  Aced the tests.  At one point they bumped me up 4 grades, then after much instance  from my parents back down 3.  School was never a challenge.  It was 100% time management.  No bs, out side of a hand full of classes, my honors/ ap hs classes were harder then the same college classes.

I turned out ok i think...i currently have $25 in my savings.  Now my checking... well thats another matter.  ;D.

Yes I am.  Waited until I was in my 30's and had a family to get going, but completed my BS in 36 months.  Until I went through it I made fun of some of the courses, but before I even finished I realized the value of going through the steps and how they eventually tied together ... All except my one semester of golf to cover the one PE credit that was required.  Had I gone ROTC I could have been on the shooting team, but since I was too old for the military ...

C and D student through high school. I drove a laundry truck for my last year of hign school and a year after that. I went into the Navy and had a "Found Jesus" moment. Trained in communication electronics than on to Nuclear power. I really enjoyed it and was getting positive feedback for the first time.

I quit nuclear power after the Navy and got into computer hardware and software. Now a network engineer. At least for the next 2 years before I retire. I still love radio comm though. I just haven't had time and engery yo set up my station since moving into our new house.

Worse yet, some folks out there take that as a challenge! Remember the whole "eating Tide Pods" trend??

And, since we're apparently providing our transcripts . . . .

A-/B+ student in HS, finished in the top 10 though (144 kids in the class), almost flunked out of college after 2 years of pre-med, moved into archeology and aced everything. Spent 2 years in grad school which is one of the major reasons I dislike academia so much.

For our college reunion this year - virtual, kind of, they did a memory book where members of the graduating class could post about themselves and memories of their time on campus. Most of them related the protests, marches, activist, anti-war crap of the time. I posted about the memorable faculty who actually taught me something, usually something other than the curriculum.

Went 250 miles on the rear tank, got 15.08 mpg and i had 2000# in the bed for 78 of those miles.   Mostly back country  roads at 45-55 mph but thats not bad for an old truck with a .410 rear end.

I have no complaints.  I offically  added it to my insurance policy.  It costs me $78.14.  a year.  2 mil 5 mil un insurred at the same and comp at $250 deductible( $1000 only saved me $.18 a month)

Tires will be here next week.  Rack is 5 weeks out, but thats ok.
