Carefully scroll about 4/5ths of the way down, and they mention Hussein & Co. is talking of banning the sale of surplus G.I. ammo cans for civilian sales. Has anyone heard anything about this? They even admit "rumors are swirling". This is the first I've heard of it. With all of the problems they have now, it's a bit hard to believe they would even mess with something like this. But you never know. Bill T.

I lved in Tx. and taught Texas politics twice a year at UT. The only thng that I deemed worthwhile about any of the Tx. politics books I either chose or was was asigned was this. They all stated that "No man's life, liberty or property" was safe while the Legislature was in session (truer words never spoken about any governing body). I will not deny a heathy degree of paranoia is just flat out realism. HOWEVER.......If I had a thing to sell and could convince folks that they better buy it now, whatever the cost, before it was banned....well, I won't be held responsible. This is particularly true as numerous whitewater and other outfitters are offering plastic versions of the GI can (if you doubt me check out an REI or Cabelas catalogue) Personally, I would take a pass on this one.

Marketing is my guess, but then it is bho we're dealing with, so most likely some truth to the matter. Remember the recycled brass debacle?
Although the last batch that showed up in the store was very rusty - and I mean VERY rusty, not just rust wash from some other can. Bottoms and hinge areas especially, rust bad enough to peel the paint off. And list price was more expensive than previously. Since they were marked down on sale, I spent the time picking through the really crappy ones until I found a few I could live with. It took a while.

I have several dozen of these things, .30 cal., .50 cal., and several 20 MM that I really like because of the room, and the lid that is completely removable. All of mine are as close to brand spankin' new as you can get. There is an older couple that attend the Small Arms Review Show every year here at the Phoenix Fairgrounds, and they have literally hundreds of these things in new condition at really good prices. They also have a ton of camo G.I. clothing, canteens, MRE's, name it. It just seems if they really were going to "ban" these things, there would be more about it. Bill T.

It is my understanding from some folks in the Navy that all ammo cans will now be demilled. That is scrapped and shredded.
They gave me two empty 5.56 ammo cans as long as I promised to spray paint over the lot code numbers. We were off base at a training course and they figured somebody would have some use for them. This was under Bush so it predates the Omama
I would say it is propably some green inititive by DOD. Truly stupid!

This makes even less sense than "cash for clunkers". Lately the government seems hell bent on destroying anything that has a useful purpose. Although if that were entirely true they would have "shredded" Hussein a long time ago. ;D Bill T.

Remember they were going to stop selling spent ammo brass till people started screaming?

To me it's like burning money. It is with absolute certainty they can get more for them as working units then they can scrapping them out. It's like the all the P-51's and P-47 Thunderbolts they scrapped out after the war. A restored P-51 or P-47 today can fetch well over $1 MILLION DOLLARS! The restored P-51 air racer "Dego Red" went on the block recently for $1,500,000.00. Bill T.

Again, just buy the plastic ones. They are lighter, seal better and don't rust. Hell, Gander throws them in free if you buy a thousand rounds or better. Granted, it is stupidly wasteful of the military to not resell them. But then again, when was this ever a factor? The closest thing the army did to getting it right was when they gave away all those Garands and M1 carbines in the sixties via the NRA. Beyod this, waste and the military seem to go hand in hand. We, on the ther hand lose twice. Once in wasted tax dollars, the second time in not being able to buy useful surplus.
