Bangladesh ferry capsizes at dock; 37 dead

DHAKA, Bangladesh – A triple-deck ferry packed with hundreds of travelers heading home for an Islamic festival capsized as they disembarked in southern Bangladesh, leaving at least 37 dead and scores missing, authorities said Saturday.
M.V. Coco, traveling from the capital Dhaka, went down late Friday as it arrived at Nazirhat town in the coastal district of Bhola, 64 miles (104 kilometers) to the south. Some survivors said the boat hit a river shoal as it approached the terminal, breaking the hull and allowing water in. As passengers scrambled to disembark, the vessel then tipped and partially sank in the Tetulia River.

You know, when I graduated college, my grandad offered me a trip. He didn't have the money to pay for expenses, but gave me my choice of a plane ticket to anywhere or $1k worth of gas money. I chose the gas money, and went out west to Yellowstone for backpacking and flyfishing, rather than listen to my friends who were talking about how cool and cheap it was to backpack in the 3rd World. I now (for about the 5,000th time) know I made the right call.

it must have been time to pray... when they all bowed towards meca...
The only way stuff like this happens is if they are overloaded, they hit something or the ballest system is out of wack.

Third World countries, with ferries, have always taken for granted maint. capacity, and fundamental navigation.
As long as there are people paying to get onboard, they'll put 500 people on a ferry "technically" rated for 175. Packed like sardines, life jackets (if there are any), are hidden away in the bilge to absorb the leaking oil from the engine(s).
An all to familiar completely avoidable loss of life.
But the famous line from the movie "Airplane" comes to mind:
"They bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into, I say, Let em' crash"

You are talking about a country that most of the population has either leprosy or aids. They do not care.

Absolutely right. The ferry was rated for many less than they had aboard. But it was after the Feast of Eid and everybody wanted to get home. Then they hit a sandbar. Sad thing is the boat's draft was about 4' and they hit a sandbar. Everybody could have just stood around on the sandbar and waited to get rescued but panic ensued.

This reminds me of how 30,000,000,000,000 people die every time a train derails in India. Did you ever see how they are hanging by the dozen off the sides and riding on the roof. A bit like the Jap subways that employ "rammers" to help shove the people in so they can shut the doors. Remember this is what Hussein wants for us along with his "one world government". It's a holiday weekend so I'm not going to cuss. Bill T.
