That was from WW I, judging by the way the are dressed I would guess Gallipoli, or the Middle east, the war in East Africa was more mobile and did not involve much trench warfare. what the guy in the background is holding up is a "Trench Periscope".

Read " A Rifleman went to war " Mc Bride go's into great detail about counter sniping from the trench. Great book anyway.
Was one of Uncle Jeff's must reads.

I like the open periscope attached to the rifle, and string on the trigger. ;D How many buddy's bit the dust before they came up with that getup? MIGHT even work with some practice.
