Title: Name your top 5 handguns and why...
Post by: kilopaparomeo on December 27, 2009, 04:25:42 PM
I had fun with this thread in the rifles section so let's try it here.

Even though I'm mostly a rifle guy, I'd like to know your top 5 handguns and why.  Same rules as before...not an objective "Glock vs 1911" type thread but rather what you like and why.  Extra points for sentimental and or experienced-based choices.

I'll start:

1.  Les Baer 1911 -- I like most handguns but the 1911 is by far my favorite.  Maybe I'm in the minority, but I haven't found them to be finicky or anachronisms, and I've been shooting them for 25+ years.  The current crop are reliable, handsome, accurate and affordable.  This Les Baer is by far the most accurate, tight and nicely made one I own.  It is a pleasure to hold and shoot.  Beautifully made, its action and trigger are like they were made by Swiss clockmakers.  JMB really was a genius.

2.  Browning HiPower/P35 -- The first centerfire handgun I owned was a Belgian-made HiPower.  I learned to shoot automatics with that gun.  After 1000's of rounds, I could shoot it pretty well.  In a fit of idiocy, I sold it to a airline pilot I knew and regretted it ever since.  This is one of the FN HiPowers that were out a few years back and I bought it as a replacement.  It is nice and shiny but not quite the quality of my first...you never forget your first.

3. Ruger Mk II -- This is the first handgun I bought.  I've had it for over 25 years.  I shot NRA Bullseye with it, have run 10,000's of rounds through it plinking and it is still accurate and reliable.  Now my 12 year old son has adopted it.  When we go shooting, this is the one he wants.  I suppose I'll have to go buy one of the new Mk III Hunters as a replacement for me.

4. Ruger Blackhawk, .45 Colt -- I had a great friend that I grew up with...from Cub Scouts and on.  John and I took different paths in life...me corporate and he went the "good ol' boy" route.  We never let a week go by though, that we didn't talk.  When we were in high school and college, John and I would spend all day Saturday at my family's farm shooting.  More often than not, I was shooting this Blackhawk and John was shooting his .41 Mag Blackhawk.  We'd spend the week working up handloads and take them out on Saturday to shoot.  We'd spend a lot of the time just talking and spending time together.  We both shot our first wild boars these pistols.  John fought in Gulf War I and never was quite right after that.  He died of a brain anuerism in August 2006.  I miss him.

5.  S&W 1917, .45 ACP -- This one was made in 1918.  I love the story of these pistols...speaks to American innocence as well as its ingenuity of getting materiel in the hands of its troops.    The single action pull is crisp and light and the double action is like butter.  This is a beautifully made pistol with commercial style finish.  Its finish and lockwork are 98%  It is a joy to hold and shoot.

And again, because I'm a chick$#!*, I'll put in the honorable mentions...

1. CZ-52 -- big, ugly, overly complex but I like that it represents Czechs thumbing their nose at Mother Russia and keeping their arms industry alive.  What can I say?  I grew up during the cold War.

2. SA XD45 -- again, big and ugly, I appreciate it because it always goes bang, feeds anything, is very comfortable and...it isn't a Glock.

3. HK P7 -- mechanically interesting...I appreciate the low bore axis and lack of recoil as well as the accuracy.  The retarded gas blowback and squeeze cocker shows the Germans sure can do some complex mechanical things

4.  Finnish M28 Luger -- surprising ergonomic and very accurate, this DWM  is the pistol I bought with the small bit of money my Mom left me when she died.  Better to put it into a pistol that I will have forever then see the money disappear.

5.  Ruger Vaquero, .45 Colt -- these are my Cowboy Action match guns.  The SAA is incredibly ergonomic and a mechanical wonder.  I really enjoy handling and shooting these guns.  They just feel right and anytime I missed in CAS, I knew it was me and not the pistols.

3. Ruger Blackhawk .357.......First "big" pistol I ever shot.

4. S&W M&P 9........the only "plastic" pistol I ever liked.

5. S&W 625..........Takes the same ammo as my 1911.  :)

1. Smith and Wesson model 66 it was one of my first duty hand gun that I love  because there are only the three in my department that were issued and I got the last one. The last of the old guys in the department. The others have retired or past away. Man cannon .357
2. Glock 26 she is dependable.
3. Taurus 92 AF. Was the last hand gun that my dad shot with me.
4. Beretta M9 she is a very reliable hand gun and I have big hands, so it fits my hams well.
5. Springfield 1911 nuf said.

Top Left: My go to 1911. Colt 1991A1 Commander. The guts are slick, it is reliable and I have bet my life on it more than any other gun I own.

Top Right: Springfield Loaded 1911. Christmas present from my wife. Will put 7 shots in a silver dollar if you can do your part.

Middle: Colt .380 Gov't Model. People always assume it's a Mustang instead of the Gov't Model. Very accurate even with the factory sights at 15 yards and under.

Bottom Left: My #1 gun. My first 1911. Colt Ser. 70 Gov't Model .45 ACP. It is ugly and scarily accurate.

Bottom Right: Colt Ser. 80 Gov't Model .45 ACP. My second 1911 and in excellent condition even though it has probably been shot more than ay of the others over a 20 year period (anal retentive when it comes to maintenance and such).

No particular order,
1) Rock Island Armory 1911 45 acp, Over the years I have owned and shot a number of 1911's and this is the first one that has been both accurate and 100% reliable
2) Browning BuckMark .22, will shoot as accurate as you can aim, while being simpler to reassemble than the Ruger.
3) Norinco model 213, This is a Chinese copy of the Tokarev chambered in 9mm, crude, inexpensive, and another 100% reliable gun, very slim for CCW, I used one to out shoot a guy with a S&W mod 39 (He was so PO'd he sold it to me for $150 ;D  )
4) S&W model 17 .22 the first hand gun I learned to shoot with
5) S&W .357 Magnum, The first centerfire pistol I shot was a model 27 Highway Patrolman with a 4" barrel, I find the smaller K frame more comfortable and currently have a model 13 that I am well pleased with.

Honorable mention
Ruger Blackhawk .357, the first pistol I bought for myself when I got out of The Marines, accurate and reliable.

This is easier than the rifle portion.

1) S&W 686 6", this is my 2nd, I absolutely wore the 1st one out at 50,000 rds, the 2nd has 60,000 + on it. DAO the barrel is ringed from a squib, but does not shoot any different. Accurate to 100 yards every day.

2) Glock 21, home done grip reduction, Meprolight tritium sights, 3 1/2lb connector, titanium firing pin, accurate reliable, with me everyday. Thousands of LEAD rounds through it. It just fits and works and of course is ugly. ;)

3)  Model 29 5" classic hunter with 2x scope, this dude will shoot 4" at 100 yards with 300 grain XTP bullets.

4) Caspian frame, Springfield upper in 9mm, pure fun to shoot, 20 rd mags a lot like shooting a 22. my 1st Bomar melt sight installation.

5) NO picture, model 41 S&W with 2 skinny 5" barrels, one factory and the other one I cut from a 7" barrel, Accuracy unbelievable from both barrels.

Honorable mentions.

6) 4" model 57 S&W great packing revolver.

7) 5" S&W 625, we have a long history, and she shoots great, I also shoot .45 Super mag in her, 185 grn pills at damn near 1300 fps.

No pictures, and no particular order except No. 1, my first gun.

1.  Ruger Security Six.  .357  Stainless Steel.  4 inch barrel.

2.  Ruger Speed Six  .357  Stainless Steel.   2 1/2 inch barrel round butt.

3.  Ruger SP101.  Stainless Steel.  .22  4inch barrel with short shroud.

4.  Ruger Blackhawk  .45 Colt/.45 Auto convertible  4 5/8 barrel.  Custom scrimshaw grips and .44 Bisley cylinder turned down smooth and reamed to .45 Colt by John Gallagher.  Closest thing I have to a custom gun.

5. 1911  Take your pick.  Colt Government model, lightweight Combat Commander, or a Rock Island Government model.

6.  Browning High Power .40 cal  or an old FN High Power in 9mm.

7.  High Standard Supermatic Citation.

9.  Ruger Redhawks in .44 or .45 Colt

10.  Smith & Wesson Model 17-4  ,22 cal, 6 inch barrel.

I guess that's my 5 and the honorable mentions wrapped up in one.

In no particular order:
Glock 26 ....Perfect for what it is for. I trust my life to this gun everyday, and it goes bang every time.
Ruger Blackhawk .357....A classic for a reason.
Browning Challenger....One of the prettiest and most accurate .22 pistols ever made. I sold mine but wish I hadn't.
Browning Hi-power... The finest S/A combat pistol made, all due respect to 1911s. This gun has clocked more holster time in more wars than I can count and is a pleasure to shoot.
Webley .177 caliber spring piston airgun.....450 FPS, single hole groups at 10 meters and enough oomph to take out a squirrel at that range. Again, I traded mine in and regret it, but I plan to fix that soon.

"Holster Time" ain't necessarily how I'd judge a 'combat' pistol.

Goof all you want, but just like the AK and the FN, just because the US never adopted it doesn't mean we shouldn't have. It is a sweet, sweet gun and history backs me up here.

In all seriousness, if I ever own a 9mm handgun, it WILL be a Hi-Power. They are very comfortable guns and fit my hand well.

Being  Vet could be the reason of my love for the 1911, I can honestly say I have truly handled just about every other pistol, there are some really great handguns out there, and to each there own. Each of us has our own ways and different tactics/grips/sizes etc. But to me there just isn't a tactical platform that comes close to John Browns 1911!!
You have heard it all before,no pistol has the trigger of a 1911,it fits ones hands so naturally,The natural controlled swipe of the safety as you come down on your intended target with the excellent SA trigger that gives you the accuracy along with the balance of it's steel frame and very limited and controlled recoil, not to mention it's reliability,What more could you ask for in a tactical pistol? Why do you think it's been around selling like crazy for over 75 years at an optimal price!

1) Government Model SA Mil-Spec,completely customized
2) SA 4 Operator with rail
3) S&W M40  Excellent BUG
buck for buck, you can't argue the point although there raising there prize now CZ is one hell of an accurate pistol right out of the box and pretty darn reliable for what you pay, they keep right up with any other manufacturer!Alot of our Spec op boys were trying to get there hands on CZ's in Irag due to there accuracy and reliability
I know I only really picked 3 but I believe the 1911 platform to be the best for a tactical sidearm  and a snub revolver to be the best for a bug. That's my decision and I stick by it!

Well, this takes some serious thinking, and I may have to change my mind and repost different list later.... These are in no particular order, BTW.

1- The 1911 {I Also can't pick any particular one of the 4 in my house}. Does it need an explanation? Accurate, Fit the hand well, and it's a .45 ACP which I'm a huge fan of. Pick a handgun accessory, and you can put it or get it on a 1911. Also, it's always been a favorite of my dads. He first taught me to shoot with one of those Marksman BB/dart/pellet guns which is styled closely after a 1911.
2- My Sorely missed, Swear up and down my new year's resolution is to buy it back from the friend I sold it to, Ruger Redhawk .44 Mag. I've been known to shoot it better than most rifles, They're BEAUTIFUL to look at (NOBODY I know of would EVER dare to call a Stainless Ruger Redhawk Ugly.), and with the .44 Mag cartridge and its 7 &1/2 in Barrel, it's legal to hunt big game in any state that will allow handgun hunting. Also, you can kill any game on the North American Continent with it if you got the right load.
3- My New S&W 649. I've wanted one since I was 16; It has a shrouded hammer, which won't snag on the draw, yet unlike the hammerless revolvers, I can still cock to fire it Single action. It hides like a dream in the front pocket of my jeans, and no one knows I have it unless I show them {Or unless they already know me well}, and it's a .357 Magnum. I can use magnum loads OR .38 Special loads in it. One thing it's missing is Crimson Trace Lasergrips, Which I'm saving for.
4- My Glock 30. Lightweight, accurate, and holds 10+1 rounds of .45 ACP, which I'm a huge fan of. Also it's another gun that's easy to find accessories for. I chose it over the G21 because it can use G21 mags as well; also it's more concealable. I also like my G30, because it has a rail, so even though It's a compact pistol, I still can put a TLR-1 on it for Nightstand duty.
5- Choosing a 5th is hard......... BUT, I think I gotta go with my Magnum Research BFR in .45-70. The first reason is It is ALWAYS a crowd pleaser.  or letting a friend shWhether you're showing it to family at Thanksgiving or Christmas parties, oot it on your range trip, or just rattling the benches at the local Gun range, People's jaws drop when they see it, and the ground shakes when it goes off. Even though I can't hit all that well with it, I LOVE shooting it.* I also like he fact that you can take out any animal in the world with the cartridge it fires, given the right load, of course.

(*Remember to keep your arms fully extended when firing one.)

YEAH, I have honorable mentions too.......
My Ruger Mark II light target is just so accurate, that You can't hate it {Mine also has lasergrips.}; Untill the first 12 times you have to take it apart and put it back together of course. But once you've learned that you can't hate it.
A Glock 21 is a wonderful thing. the 23 was awesome to shoot. Pretty well any Glock, although I never did like the 36.
Ruger P-series are awesome, however bulky. First gun I ever concealed Carried was a Ruger P90. It wasn't till Is stopped carrying it and tried to carry it again later that I realized how bulky it was. It's Another astoundingly accurate gun. The P85MKII was no different either. Both Tack Drivers.
Any Single Action Revolver.
Walther P38/P1.
One I've never shot, but really want, is a Mare's Leg. Ya know, the Lever action pistols. I want one.
Always wanted a Colt 1917, and have kicked myself for not buying one of the last ones I saw for $450 at the Gun Show. {Shut Up... I was Broke...}
 I'll stop here for now........

#1 The 1911
#2 Colt Single Action Army (The Peacemaker) -- God created man, Samuel Colt made them equal.
#3 The Glock -- It started the modern polymer service pistol revolution (Who didnt think Glock was going to be on my list?)
#4 Smith & Wesson J-Frame -- IMO the #1 concealed carry revolver ever made
#5 The gun you have on you right now -- A gun in the hand is worth two in the safe!

After my #1 the order can vary.

#1  Ruger Security-Six .357 Magnum. My first handgun and still going strong.
#2  1911 45 .acp. An American classic. Pick your personal favorite. The 1911 rocks!!!
#3  Ruger Red Hawk .44 Magnum. My first .44 Mag and they are built like a tank.
#4  1st Generation Glock 17. My first tupperware. Like a Timex, she has taken a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.
#5  Walther PPS, because it's small, reliable and accurate and because I carry it every day that I'm upright and out of the house............ I hope for more upright and out of the house days in the future. ;D

CD, Have you SHOT the Coonan, I've always been interested in them because I like the 1911, and I like the .357 cartridge.
Getting them in the same package would be great .

Wise choice IMO.  I just expected to see it on nearly everyone's list though.

Why go with the SP101 when you can get the Security Six, Speed Six or Service Six.  I know theyare not made anymore, but they are six shot and built like a tank.
Having said that, I did post the SP101 in .22 and would love one in .327mag.  Those calibers are 6 shot.  I believe there are at least 2 factory SP101s in .22mag.  I know there is at least one.  Like a dummy I didn't buy it when I first saw it and a few minutes later it was gone.

Wolfe,

Ruger dropped the .22 mag for the SP101, smallest bore is now .327 Federal.

1. Dan Wesson .357 magnum. I loved that gun and wish I still had it.
2. Para P-14. 15 rounds of .45 acp.
3. Ruger mark II .22. I have two of them. One was my dad's. The first shot I fired from his was a kill shot on a red squirrel I could barely see up in a tree.
4. and 5. Ruger GP-100 and blackhawk. I've been thinking about them a lot and may get one of each.

1. Springfield 1911a1 loaded never fails and it brings the pain.
2. Glock 20 10mm great for defense and putting food on the table.
3. Ruger GP100  its a hand held tank what more can i say.
4. Beretta 92fs   Hi mag capacity
5. Ruger Blackhawk 44mag puts food on the table and makes big holes in shit.

I think I can give you 5 but I'll be honest I don't spend a lot of time shooting or training on side arms I don't own and can't carry so YMMV.

5. I have yet to get one in my safe but its coming. The Sig Sauer P226 Blackwater Tactical. When I finally procure this pistol it will be in a .357 Sig flavor. I love how this pistol shoots, the sights, the position of the decocker just make sense for some reason. They run like Swiss watches and are made by some of the smartest people in the biz.

4. Of all the polymer pistols I have fired or carried I think one rises up above the rest. The S&W M&P is my favorite! Great ergonomics, excellent fit and finish, best trigger I have felt on a plastic platform, I really have nothing but good things to say. My fiancée’s M&P 9c amazes me every time we take it to the range. I can admit I expect my big guns to shoot well and they do, but I don’t expect to replicate my shots with her little mousey polymer pistol, but I do. Makes me really question my choices for daily carry.

3. Third only because of my connection with Beretta is the S&W 327 M&P R8. I have only owned this revolver for a short time but I have had the luck of shooting it a few times in the past hence my current possession. In a world of polymer pistols this double action revolver rises above and captures the imaginations of even the youth of this nation. 8 shots of the proven 357 magnum is enough to get the job  done, if not carry two extra moon clips and you have 24 rounds that can be reloaded just as fast as any magazine. The hexagonal barrel provides sub moa accuracy and the lightweight Scandium alloy frame makes this just a pleasant firearm to haul around. I would go as far as to say that this revolver is gaining ground on my 1911. Just a well made, beautiful looking revolver.

2. My uncle spent 10 years with the company and helped design some of the small parts. For my family the go to high capacity 9mm semi auto is the Beretta 92FS. I don’t think there is much to be said that is not known. It is an extremely accurate, extremely reliable sidearm and has earned its place in the hands of our US military. I know everyone thinks that Glock writes the book when it comes to solid pistol platform but I think its just because people find them easier to carry. The 92FS is a solid sidearm and due to my connection it will always have a place in my safe.

1. My absolute favorite sidearm and my all time and favorite carry sidearm is my SW1911PD. Pandora is a 5 inch 1911 variant. The frame is made out of a Scandium alloy with a picatinny rail molded into the dust shield. The slide is a high carbon stainless steel and the entire gun is coated in a melonite finish. I have had some trigger work done and replaced the factory three dot with a set of XS express standard dot size sights. This gun is on my belt as we speak and as with most days ending in y she is with me everywhere else. I do compete on a limited bases with the sidearm and she is never the reason I fall short. Total package is 32oz unloaded.

1. Ruger Redhawk .44 Mag 7.5" stainles, what is shot, stays shot, what is aimed at is hit and if it gets too close you can club em with it as they are tougher than a sherman tank. Oh and they be fun.

2. Ruger Charger, once you modify the trigger and replace the placcy housing, change the stock over etc etc they undoubtly the funnest, most accurate .22 pistol about for the money, cheap as chops to buy and run.

3. CZ85 Combat 9mm, has never jammed despite the abuse and the number of rounds I have put through it, its getting long in the tooth but if Sh#t happened it would be the one I grabbed first.

4. Ruger Mark iii 6" 7/8th barrell modified trigger, compensated and changed grips is fun to use and despite what the naysayers do say runs just fine and is relatively accurate.

5 Taurus 608 SS 8.75" 8 shot in .357 just for when the knobs count six and think theyre safe. Again the naysayers can get well and trullied, has never given an ounce of trouble, is fun and bloody accurate.

Funny how many of our lists contain that .44 Mag Redhawk. ;D

A couple friends worked at a pawn shop a couple years ago, and they had at one time a 6" barreled Taurus 608. If they had wanted less than $600 for it, my dad or I would have bought it. I still want one.

If it were just about SD, I'd agree with you, but for target, you want a good .22  or air pstol.I'm surprised I'm the only one that mentioned one as they are basically free to run, almost silent, safe to shoot in the garage or yard, capable of one hole groups if you buy a good one, and squirrell worthy at reasonable ranges. Then of course there's the BFG in everything from .357 and up. Need it, no. Cool, heck yeah. ;D

Out of the many handguns I own.

1. S&W Performance Center Gold Match 1911 .45 (I invested way too much in making this pistol a super duper .45, and it absolutely is)
2. S&W Full Size M+P .40 (The best grip, no muss, no fuss, .40 out there, with zero issues, with any ammo, accurate)
3. FN9 (It's a 9 that just works, high capacity, grip, accuracy, out of the box reliability)
4. Glock 21 (It's a big honkin' chunk o' Glock, it's like an AK, you can't get it NOT to fire, just one that will work, even on Zombies)
5. Rossi Interarms .357 Magnum SS. (Nightstand, bump in the night pistol, it just can be counted on by me or the wife, without issue)

Pistols of note:
Kel-Tec P3AT .380, carried 98% of the time, no issues,
Uberti .45Colt SAA, with 225gr Winchester Silver Tips, for werewolves. Great gun for the trail.
EAA Witness Compact .40, except for the ported barrel, would be in the top 5.
S&W Walther PPK/S, heavier than the Kel-Tec, rapid firing, reloading, all solid, very accurate.
M85 Taurus .38 snub... Comfortable carry, no frills, +P rated.

2. Colt 1911(Battlefield experience.)
3. Glock 21(13 + 1 .45acp with exhaustive durability & reliability)
4. Colt 1851 Navy(Wild Bill Hickok, John Henry "Doc" Holliday, Richard Francis Burton, Ned Kelly, & Robert E. Lee.)

My top five are easy for me:
1. Kimber 1911 (any model) Kimber almost single handedly blew the 1911 market up and forced everyone to get with the affordable custom .45 market!

2. Sig 220: I have a definite weakness for the single stack .45, and few are more reliable and accurate out of the box than sig.

3. Browning (FN) hi-power: the P35 has to be one of the most underated guns of all time...single action trigger, one of the first high cap pistols, and the grandaddy wonder nine.

4. Ruger 22/45 I had one of the earlier model 22/45's and it was the easiest shooting, most accurate, comfortable .22 pistol I have ever shot. Good sights, nice trigger, optimal grip angle (1911 anyone??) And it would feed friggin anything.

5. Desert Eagle: one of the most iconic pistols of the late 20th century. Also one of the few pistols that fed magnum cartridges reliably. Plus you could get it in .50?? The trigger could use some help...but jeez the muzzle blast and the ogling at the gunclub made it worth the effort to get good with the gun....

Could'a sworn I answered this one, oh well;

1911 (Just about any good one) - accurate, reliable, fixable (with parts you can get dang near anywhere)

Ruger Security-Six - Boat anchor, damn near unbreakable

EZ-40 (aka CZ-99, CZ-999, CZ-07) - The longer I own this Yugoslavian pistol the more I like it, accurate, reliable, fully ambidextrous, it is a modified SIG P-226 clone and works every bit as well as my SIG did, but I like the metal back-strap better than the SIG plastic wrap-around grip panels. I especially like the ambidextrous thing (though the mag release could be a bit smoother) since I injured my right arm a while back, it is real good for shooting left handed.

SIG P-220 - This is really my second favorite pistol but I don't have one anymore and with the finances I likely won't anytime soon.

CZ-75 - I have never owned one but I have had several clones (TZ-75 and Witness) and I love the way it fits my hand. It is probably next on my wish-list, maybe a compact CZ-06 in .40 S&W.

In no order...

 1. Kimber Warrior: The first 1911 I have ever owned set up exactly the way I like it.
 2. Ruger Bisley in .22LR: It is my go to range gun. It always seem to end up in the case when I go there.
 3. S&W Model 15: It is boring but it always go bang and is more accurate than I am.
 4. Colt Offical Police w 5" barrel: It was Grandads and it is everything the above mentioned Model 15 is but with a better trigger pull.
 5. Uberti 1875 repilca in .45LC: It is the most comfortable shooting SA out there and is fun to shoot CAS with.

XDm-40, carry piece
XD-45, because they don't have an XDm-45 yet
XD-40, my first XD, bought when it was first introduced
XD-9, paid for itself in ammo cost savings within a few months of purchasing
Ruger 22/45, because it's the only one I can afford ammo for now
