Title: 2010 NRA Convention in Charlotte, NC
Post by: bryand71 on December 30, 2009, 10:56:20 PM
Ok, DRTV members. Who is going this year? I am taking time off for this one, it happens to be in my state this year and I don't want to miss out on all the fun. Is anyone planning a DRTV meet & greet?

Sound off on whether you plan on going and what day, maybe we can even get our picture taken with the DRTV Stars!

My wife and I will probably be there all three days.  I live less than 50 miles away from the convention center (and when I'm not working from home I actually work next door to it).  I'd love a DRTV meet & greet if we can work it out.

If I can get the war dept. good with a visa in time (and if I don't get stuck on the ship without a relief) it would make for a great motorcycle ride... destination/goal. you know... I sure do hope to get out there.

I am looking forward to this event, I have wanted to go to one of the yearly conventions for a long time, I just could never take time off or had enough money for the trip. I am trying to get my Father and Uncle to come down and go with me.

I'll probably swing it this year.   Saturday only though.

It's too bad so many things are stacked up in May with Binachi Cup just a week later.

I've made it to two and enjoyed them.  Once in Orlando to hear Chuck Yeager speak and once in Nashville to hear Limbaugh.  Who's the banquet speaker this year?

My old stomping grounds, with the family farm in Mooresville, 25 miles up I-77 North of Charlotte,.  I'm going, and I think m25 is going also.

Used to work Boat Shows at the CC, it's a nice one, right in the heart of "Uptown" Charlotte, locals don't call it "Downtown", kinda hokey, but looking forward to it.

It's in the works, just working out the logistics.  I have two Navy buddies I haven't seen in thirty years, one from MO and another who lives in the Charlotte area.  Hoping to catch up with one and drive down from New England and meet up with the other, should be a hoot as we were three rather mischievious sailors back in the day...

What we need is a distinctive badge so we recognize each other.   We do this in another group where someone designed a unique logo, then we each printed and laminated our own badge.

It would be good "advertising" for DRTV.

What about the Shooting Gallery duck?
Or maybe just "DRTV"

MICHAEL/MARSHAL Any objections to co-opting your logos?

Give me this holiday and I'll come up with an idea.

Badges, DRTV T-Shirts?  all DRTV members go in wearing sunglasses? Track down the little announcer guy at the intercom and make a DRTV Roll Call announcement?

Just tossing em' out there...

Rendezvous at the Outdoor Channel Booth at "x" hour???

If deepwater can make it, he's our designated spotter, as he's about 7 feet tall..... :-*

Well, if I can't make it this year, there's a pretty good change I'll make it next year, when it's 30 miles away from my home (in Pittsburgh).   :)

Do you need to sign up in advance to attend, or can you just show up at the convention?  Also, do you have to be an NRA member to get into the show?  Can an NRA member bring a guest?

The last time I was at the web site for the convention it didn't really have any specifics.

Even though it's in Pittsburgh next year, I'd still like to try to attend this year.   :)

We need to really put our heads together on this.. We 3 are hugely hammered on time at these events..and our "plans" can be there one minute and gone in the blink of an eye".. . but. Marshal and I will be shooting a competition cowboy match in a couple weeks in Arizona. I will definitely pin these 2 down on what we can do as far as getting together ect.. and I will have information when I get back..

Just as a side note guys, and I don't know if it even matters to you ,but the covention is being held in a no guns allowed facility. Kinda ironic for a gun rights convention to be held where no guns are allowed.

Standard security procedure for the VIP's, celeb's etc,.... No big deal, as I don't know of any stats that exist regarding any crimes committed at an NRA convention. ;D

Kinda like robberies at a gun show.

I don't like stats when it comes to my 2A rights and my right to self defense. What would the stats have told you about being in class at Virgina Tech a few years ago, or at Fort Hood? But this to me is not even about being fearful of something happening at the event, but more to  do with principal. I just see it as a poor choice that an organization advocating for gun rights to hold it's conventon in a GUN FREE ZONE . You say it's for security purposes ,but I think I would feel more secure surrounded by a group of armed law abiding citizens and one armed bad guy, than being surrounded by a group of un-armed law abiding citizens and one armed bad guy.

Last year in Phoenix, there was quite a bit of open carry as it is allowed in that state, inside the building, not just on the street.

Do you think they will have metal detectors?

Can't carry loaded firearms at a gun show either. However, NC has an open carry statute on the books but Char-Meck is a "blue" county, the main reason is Charlotte Convention Center is owned by the city, thus it makes it gov't property, and restricted to carry open or otherwise.

I think that a better location, based on principles, could have been chosen than in Charlotte. Charlotte has shown that it is not very 2A friendly .
From the Charlotte Convention Center Rules and Regulations Brochure:

7.30   DANGEROUS WEAPONS

A “dangerous weapon” is any object or device  designed or intended to be used to inflict serious  injury upon persons or property.

1. The possession of a dangerous weapon is prohibited in the Convention Center, except as  provided below. Concealed weapons are strictly prohibited in the Convention Center.

2. If firearms are an integral part of an event, an exhibitor may display a firearm as part of its exhibit during an event subject to the following:

a. The exhibitor must comply with all federal, state, and local laws governing the possession and/or sale of firearms.

b. Firearms may not be loaded or fired in the Convention Center.

c. Firearms must be deactivated by removal of the firing pin, the bolt, or otherwise altered so that they are incapable of being fired (e.g., by a metal lock through the trigger mechanism, a plastic strap securing the trigger or hammer mechanism, a plastic strap securing the firearm’s “action” mechanism in an “open” state, or otherwise).

Exceptions may be granted, at the CRVA’s sole discretion, for particularly rare antique firearms displayed in a locked case or otherwise made inaccessible.

d. Powder or primers are prohibited in the Convention Center. Sample live ammunition may be displayed in exhibits, which are kept separate from firearm exhibits or by exhibitors who do not also display firearms.

e. Firearms and ammunition will be inspected by an authorized safety inspector approved by the CRVA during event move-in and/or at such other times as determined by the CRVA. Violations of this policy will be reported to show management and the CRVA. All violations must be corrected before an exhibit will be allowed to open.

f. The sale of firearms and ammunition is prohibited in the Center, although exhibitors may take orders for future delivery subject to applicable law.
7.31   RESIDUAL MATTERS
All matters, rules, regulations or deviations there- from, not expressly provided for herein, shall be decided upon by the General Manager.

There are plenty of other cities in NC that are far more 2A friendly than Charlotte, that this event could be held at. Feeding money to a city that chooses to stand on the other side of the fence of where you do , in my opinion, dosen't make alot of sense.

So blindhog, are you going to go?

The choice of "where" has more factors;  geography, facilities, hotels, amenities, size, number of attendees, exhibitors, VIP's, location, location, location, etc,...

Other cities in NC, don't have a Convention Center, large enough, or nice enough, for an NRA Convention. It's proximity to other cities in several other states, with Interstate and airport access also play a role.

While 99.9% of carrying, openly or concealed attendees would be perfectly fine, that .1 % that gets in wanting to go down in hail of gun-fire to make the news, is too much of a security risk.

They very well may have metal detectors, I don't know, but I'm sure they will have lots of armed security. In and out of uniform.

I'll even bet the show next year in Pittsburgh, won't allow carry either.

I'm still looking forward to it.
, and meeting as many DRTV members that can get there. Heard a rumor Sarah Palin and Tom Selleck may be there,,, anyone else heard that?

TW I think that Greensboro could do it ,and I know that it's not as nice as Charlotte but at least they are more 2A friendly.  As far as carrying into the convention , state law would forbid it anyway, as it is illegal to carry a firearm into any place that charges an admission. The point is Charlotte is among one of the most anti gun cities in NC right there with Durham, Chaple Hill and Cary. I would just like to see city officials have to  see the consiquenses of thier actions.
" To suppose arms in the hands of citizens ,to be used at individual discretion, except in private self defense or by partial orders of towns, countries or districts of a state, is to demolish every constitution, and lay the laws prostrate, so that liberty can be enjoyed by no man,; it is a dissolution of the goverment" John Adams 1788.

I don't know why they don't have it in the convention center here in Raleigh. The only reason I can think of is that it was still under construction when they were booking the site. It is now open and is very nice from what I hear, I haven't been inside yet, but the outside looks very nice. Maybe next time around when they come back to this state.

Having it in the "Enemy Camp", rubs the Anti's noses in the fact that we are better behaved . None of their "Dire Predictions" ever happen . Then middle of the road voters compare their personal experiences with what the leftist media are saying.
When the media says, "Gun Nut's", what the voter saw was well behaved, well mannered people who brought them business.
This is a very good propaganda tool to spread our message among other groups of voters

You know, I'm generally not a boycott person, or someone who gets their panties in a twist if the guy I'm doing business with disagrees with me politically, but this is too much. An NRA convention in a venue where I can't carry, buy or sell a gun? That's like having a liquor convention in Salt Lake City or a tent revival in Riyadh. What's the point and why? Aren't there plenty of other states/venues the NRA could have chosen? Hell, why not Boston? Same rules, only you'd be making a point. The freaking Palm Beach County Convention Center (brand new, centrally located and desperate for money) would be glad to accomodate. They might draw the line at NBC weapons, but otherwise party on, as long as you pay cash in advance. ::) Who ever booked this should be slapped.
