Title: If you could only choose one...
Post by: garand4life on January 03, 2010, 07:36:35 PM
I am going to be picking a second handgun this month. I have decided on .357SIG so attempts to sell me on a different caliber (.45ACP) are not necessary. Keep in mind that my budget and circumstances are such that I have my M&P40 full size and at this point I want something a bit smaller but not necessarily a compact frame like a G33.

As good as my M+P .40 works, I'll run with the same in 357Sig. Hell, I'm going to get 357 Sig barrel for mine as soon as I can..

For compact? Heck yeah!

If you already have a M&P and like it, why not stick with a sure thing?

That was my first inclination. I guess I like re-enforcing my decisions. But, I have always been one to look narrowly through a wide window so getting outside opinion helps.

Would mags interchange if you stick with a M&P?

The dimensions on the compacts and fullsize for the mag catch are identical. The guns are exactly the same size with the exception of the grip & barrel length.

Familiarity makes it a no brainer....stick with the M&P.

M&P definitely.  No learning curve.

Can anyone give me good reason to avoid .357sig?

Can anyone give me good reason to avoid .357sig?

Even with headphones, they are VERY LOUD !!! Louder to me than full house .357 mag out of a 3" revolver. Other than that, good cartridge.

Can anyone give me good reason to avoid .357sig?

The ONLY reason, is ammo availability. 5/10/15/20 years from now, your kids/grandkids, etc,....whoever the gun goes too,...will the caliber phase out and be a cult favorite like the 10mm or 41 magnum? (I don't know just askin'),...

Or is another caliber going to "always" be around.  I know we like to think we can get bullets "anytime", but what will be around if some political agenda makes it tough?

I have concerns with the .45ACP, also, as it's an "American" round, what happens than if it's prohibited? (I know reloaders will be the black market)....

but,....

357Sig is and always will be a great round, M+P is a familiar platform to you, and it's a damn good one.

My .02 cents....

if .357sig goes out of availability I can always buy a .40c barrel and put it in the 357c slide

I'll echo m25, louder than HELL.  I shot my step son's this past week.

Also, if you stray from the M&P, take a look at a refurb Sig 229.

Isn't .357 sig a necked down .40?

Heck, if the ammo becomes unavailable, just have the chamber reamed to .40.

Necked down to a 9mm bullet size...ballistics are quite a bit more substantial....With the availability of drop in barrels, I sure would consider a drop in .40 barrel for sure.

Dumb statement. I need to remove that.  :-[

I guess it doesn't do any good to ream the chamber if the bullet won't fit down the barrel. Duh!

Ballistics for the .357 Sig are damn close to .357 Mag numbers.  Great cartridge and might be my next aquisition so let me know how that M&P shoots with it......and of all the shortages, I would always see some on the shelves.

I know are local shops have .357 sig in gold dots and such. plus I just had 100 rounds of winchester whitebox dropped in my lap so no worries there for the first trip out.

I'll give you two. Price and easy availabilty if you're in east nowhere on a road trip or SHTF at home. But you knew that when you bought the first one. Personally, I view it like 10 mm. Ballistically it's a great catridge, but it didn't catch on enough to be affordable and common. BUT, if mags are interchangeable with your M@P, and you like the gun, that's a huge plus.

PS I guess it boils down to this for me. I am not as paranoid, err, I mean mentally prepared, as some members of this board. ;D But I am a child of the '80s who grew up in the Cold War with Red Dawn, The Day After etc. I base my defensive (hell, all my firearms) choices based not on what is ballistically the best round, but on what is good enough to do the job and widely available. The"default calibers" are classics for a reason and I know I can find ammo in any Wally World (or self respecting Tx. convience store ;)). This does mean I sacrifice some oomph and accuracy, but I know that odds are good that no matter where I am, or how bad things get, I can probably find .556, 12 gauge and 9mm. Just my .02 YMMV

+1 Since you already have the M&P why not keep it consistent? I mean unless you just absolutely want something else.

I picked the Sig only because that is the gun I would get for myself. You might be better off with the S&W because that is what your primary gun is.

I voted for the xd but I would choose neither as a backup. I would choose a revolver, I want a gun thats fool proof and will go bang. One that wont foul, drop a mag or break . 8)

Only one for me would be the Glock, just plain versatility out ways the Pro/Con area. 357sig change barrel to 40s&w change barrel and magazine to 9mm. Just my 2cents.

Really, for me, the backup would be the same type of gun as the full size gun and carried off body or be a Jframe in the offside front pocket.

After reading this thread yesterday and today and after thinking it over...............I voted for the SIG..................... SHOCKER, I know.

I already have 2 Glocks, and they each serve their roles. One as a nightstand gun and the other as a carry gun. So, if I personally were to make a choice it would be for the SIG just to have as a range/fondle gun. I personally dont care for the XDs, and I have no interest in M&P since I am a "Glock fan boy" (Shout out - Michael Bane) and can not wrap my tiny little brain around ever buyer any polymer service pistol other then Glock.

*M&P would be my choice for a polymer pistol if those Glocks didnt just oozing "Perfection" ;)

I will say this...If you are wanting to go compact, the M&P is the way to go.  I held and fired a lot of popular .40 compacts on the market (Glock 23&27, M&P Compact, XD Compact, Walther PPS, and even the new Springfield EMP in 40).  and for my hand at least, the M&P was the most comfortable and usable.  The finger grip extension is a must, but once in hand you really dont even notice that it is a compact.  It feels like a full size gun.

Is this an MP owner forum or what?

I think there should be a forum just for M&Ps here just to balance out all of the "Free Love" for Glock. Just kidding yall know I don't hate Glocks... I just think the M&P is the future that Glock is just now coming to align in their own products. And you have to give S&W credit for operating in enemy territory... I mean MA.

I think that S&W beat a dead horse (Sigma) for a long time trying to compete with Glock and finally came out with a real competitor. Glock isn't necessarily following Smith here. Many other makers have ben offering pistols with interchangeable grip panels. Police departments want that interchangeability now and Glock is giving it to them. I'm sure some civilian and military users are going to benefit from them as well. I do like Glocks, but I think that M&Ps and XD's are finally getting there as well. At our range, nothing holds up like Glocks still. M&Ps and XD's are always needing broken parts repaired. Strangely, in the XDs that is sen more in the 9's and 40's, rather than the 45. Maybe because of higher pressures in the smaller calibers.

In reference to the comment about Glock not following the M&P all I have to say is that on the whole more law enforcement departments are switching from Glocks to M&Ps not the other way around. And these are not small departments. It's a developing trend that there is a strong demand for AMERICAN made and owned product that PERFORMS as promised. And I haven't seen M&Ps breaking in any quantity. The only mechanical problems I've seen reported online or from S&W is the mag catch which was only on first release compacts and fullsize. I sent mine because I could have something changed to more of my suiting for free, not because it failed. And from the real world torture tests that have been provided from firearm trainers in regards to round count it's performing above expectation. 63,000 rounds before a "crack developed in the slide" that the engineers at S&W declared safe to fire. Pretty impressive for the new kid on the block.
