Title: Told ya so!

Now, here it is.... your moment of Duh!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1240279/Children-smacked-young-likely-successful-study-finds.html

Quote
Young children who are smacked 'go on to be more successful'

Young children who are smacked by their parents grow up to be happier and more successful than those who have never been hit, research claims.

It found that children who are smacked before the age of six perform better at school when they are teenagers.

They are also more likely to do voluntary work and to want to go to university than those who have never been physically disciplined.

But the study also revealed that children who are smacked after the age of six were more likely to exhibit behavioural problems, such as being involved in fights.

Smacking is currently banned in 20 European countries, including Germany, Spain and the Netherlands.

In Britain 'reasonable chastisement' in the home is allowed unless it leaves a mark.

But the study, by Marjorie Gunnoe, professor of Psychology at Calvin College in the U.S. state of Michigan, found there was not enough evidence to prove that smacking harmed most children.

She said: 'The claims that are made for not spanking children fail to hold up.

'I think of spanking as a dangerous-tool, but then there are times when there is a job big enough for a dangerous tool. You don't use it for all your jobs.'

Professor Gunnoe questioned 2,600 people about being smacked, of whom a quarter had never been physically chastised.

The participants' answers then were compared with their behaviour, such as academic success, optimism about the future, antisocial behaviour, violence and bouts of depression.

Teenagers in the survey who had been smacked only between the ages of two and six performed best on all the positive measures.

Those who had been smacked between seven and 11 fared worse on negative behaviour but were more likely to be academically successful. Teenagers who were still smacked fared worst on all counts.

Parenting guru Penelope Leach disagreed with the findings.

'No good can come from hitting a child,' she said. 'I do not buy this idea that children will learn positive behaviour from being smacked.

'The law says adults hitting adults is wrong and children should be protected in the same way. Children are people too.'

But psychologist Aric Sigman said: 'The idea smacking and violence are on a continuum is a bizarre and fetished view of what punishment is for most parents.

'If it's done judiciously by a parent who is normally affectionate and sensitive to their child, our society should not be up in arms about that. Parents should be taught to distinguish this from a punch in the face.'

Two years ago, Britain was criticised by the UN for failing to ban smacking in the home, after experts said it was a form of abuse.

And growing numbers of the public seem to agree: A recent poll found 71 per cent of parents would support a ban on smacking.

Smack 'em if ya got 'em!

For once a shrink got it right. You can't lecture a two year old, just a couple of quick swats on the butt will get his attention though. There are plenty of other ways o punish a ten year old. What in THE HELL is going on in Europe? When did the whole continent seemingly get turned into pansies?

Think younger then that.... we started doing little spanks on the hand with our kids at around 1 year old (When they started crawling)... for the simple reason that its really the only way to teach them the meaning of the word "NO" and successfully establish boundaries. You can't explain to a one year old the importance of not touching something because it might break or they might get hurt, but they very quickly learn the concept that they will get a spanking if they still do something after being told "NO".

As they have gotten older, spanking has been best used as an empty threat more then when used for punishment. When you are out in public and they are showing out, there is no better way to get them back in line then to tell them they are about to get a spanking.

All kids are different, and some will respond best to other forms of punishment but those people who blindly rule out spanking as a structured form of punishment are delusional at best.

When I went thru the foster care stuff for my cousin we got all these pamplets on how hitting and even yelling at a child is mean...  the best was this q.

You find alcohol in your 16 teen year old duagthers room, what do you do?

then they had a bunch of crappy answers... blah blah blah.

the answer they wanted you to pick is:

you respect her privacy, talking to her about the dangers of alcohol and put her on restriction for two weeks.

yeah, thats what is going to happen.   ::)

I'm not sure what I would do, but I know that room is going to be searched and she is going to be on "restriction" for alot longer then 2 weeks.

Over the years of my youth, I became an expert in leather belt aerodynamics, my Dad was a suit and tie guy, and those executive belts were thinner yet the pain was short lived.

On days he wore the larger "western" style belt, they were like a 45ACP, big and slow, but hit like a mule.

Than my mother would hurt her hand, so she not only became an expert marksman with her shoes, but large wooden cooking spoons (made of birch, or ashe), really got my attention as well....

Than I had an epiphany!!!! DON'T "F" UP ANYMORE!!!!!!!

I took the "hard" path for a few years, but, looking back, I deserved every "whoopin I got"....

Hell I even got "whacked at school" those paddles with the tassled leather grips were kinda tough,.... :P

My cousin Jennifer, (same age as me), stole her mother's car at 16. She got her "whoopin" when she got home, and than thought calling 911 was a good idea. The cops showed up, hysterical teenage girl with an open handprint on her face.

Cops inquire what caused all this, Aunt Becky replied, "Daughter stole my car, told me to "F" off, and I smacked her, next question...."

Cops left...

Different days back than I suppose,...

My dad paddled me one day and I laughed. I was 12 and I never ever ever ever did that again.  I can still see the plywood paddle shattering. After that my dad would say "you think you are man enough to out box the old man" that was his way of saying you better stop what you are doing. My dumb a@@ brothers tried a couple of times not me. They were older and not as smart as I. Watched both of them get to see the tweety birds and take a nap in the yard.

They say nothing hurts worse then a wooden spoon.... those people never met my mother, or she would have informed them that the plastic spatula is far superior on a kids bare ass.......... OUCH! My dad used to also give it to us with sticks of bamboo........... no matter how many times "spare the rod" was lectured about, it never made it any easier.

Exit Question: Did your dad know how to "make the belt talk"?

I wasn't just punished, I was beaten, and I've been screwed up ever since.  :(  People who don't know when to stop shouldn't beat their kids.

My parents' favorite tool o'punishment was a yardstick. When the yardstick was not immediately available, it was a wooden hairbrush. Once (thank God!) it was a piece of lath.

When the yardstick broke on me and I laughed, Mom decided that that was enough.

when I was 6 or 7 I said a "bad word" in front of my mother.  she grabed me, opend my mouth and put tabsico on the back of my tongue.  todate I've only said one or 2 bad words infront of her.

Great point TAB, I, as all kids, disagree, got mad, and even argued with my folks, BUT (back than) there was a line in the sand that was never crossed, due to fundamental RESPECT. (and consequences were rendered if you crossed it).
Those times have long gone due to culture and parenting. (Not in all cases, but), parenting has let kids get away with almost anything these days.

Now parents call 911 when their teenage son won't get off the Play Station. (Are you kidding me?) Not in my day, but evident in ours.

I wasn't just punished, I was beaten, and I've been screwed up ever since.  :(  People who don't know when to stop shouldn't beat their kids.

jumbo, I'm sorry, I am not making any mockery or light of a "whoopin" and flat out abuse. Beatings are never a corrective form of discipline, and not what I think this OP's about, or what was previously posted.

Parents, can and sometimes still, go too far, and I've known friends that were subject to that kind of abuse, and it is wrong.

Spankings and beatings are two totally different things. One is parenting, one is criminal.

Oh, man!  I was unfortunate enough to experience one of those at a Chinese restaurant in Columbus, OH, when I was a teenager.  I think I suffered nerve damage, as I haven't found ANYTHING too hot for me since.  I was in agony for probably a half hour and the staff was bringing me everything they could think of to extinguish the flames.  The manager or owner, not sure which, also apologized profusely... probably afraid I would sue, since I was informed, mistakenly I'm sure, that the peppers were supposed to be removed before serving.

They are hot SOBs, but you can't make good kung pao pork without them. Just treat them like bay leaves and don't eat them.

Having experienced spankings to and old fashioned ass whoopin' I agree with spanking. I remember the old wooden paddles from school days...........Yikes. The coach could hit my ass and it would lift my feet off of the ground. I'm not sure if my Dad beat some sense into me or knocked it out of me. I was cursed with a smart mouth and a bad temper as a teenager. I also knew everything or at least I thought I did. I was 25 or 26 before I realized how dumb I really was.

On the hot sauce. The hottest stuff I have ever tried is "Dave's Gourmet Insanity Sauce". It will kill you. That's coming from this good ole Texas boy who loves jalapenos and eats them with most meals. The lable states and I quote " A great cooking ingredient for sauces, soups and stews. Also, strips waxed floors and removes driveway grease ". It goes on to warn you "not to try it if you have any heart or respritory problems". It burns for about a half hour no matter what you do. I guess thats the insanity part? I've used it a couple of times in two gallons of chilli and all it took was about 6 or 8 drops. Try it if you dare.

My mom broke many a yardsticks on me.
The worst day in the history of childhood punishment came when my dad brought home a couple of aluminum yardsticks from the extrusion company he worked for.....

Yeah.......they hurt........of course I did get the satisfaction of knowing that they couldn't be used for measuring anymore though.

Thankfully, I wasn't raised around Hickory Trees. According to my NC local fellows, the "Rule Of Thumb" pertained to whoopin your wife/and/or children with a Hickory switch, as long as it did not exceed the diameter of your thumb,....

Times were a lot tougher way back than,.... I got whooped, but compared to the "old" days, I had it easy...
