not because any one here thought it was racist but some one in the US saw it and had a hissy fit applying their steretypes on to us.
Firstly let me explain we have a little game we play over here called cricket, now some of you may have heard of it, some may not however the closest comparison I can think of is your sport baseball.
Cricket is fiercely competitive amongst its fans and there is always a lot of banter between the different countries that compete (in a good way I might add). The very worst situation you could find yourself in is sitting fully dressed up in your countries colours in the wrong crowd, you would be jeered and teased all day long, doesnt matter if your an aussie in a west indian crowd or a indian in a pommy crowd its just the way it is.
That said KFC brought out an advert this season exploiting this very thing with a aussie in amongst a bunch of jamaicans who as a peace offering lets them all have a peice of his kfc and settled them all down. We here didnt think any thing of this, until some doo gooder some how in america labled it as racist.
any way have a look at the offending advert.

Bear in mind this add would never had been shown in the states and the sterotype of black american and fried chicken is/was unknown to us. We simply dont view things that way.
So keeping all that in mind do any of you think that this add is racist for its intended audience? Should it have been pulled in Aus because some US liberal got their knickers in a knot, isnt there things a lot more racist happening every day that should be addressed ranther than this?
-
No self respecting Jamaican would eat KFC....they like their chicken "jerked"....as to the racist side, I can see it for what it is but not everyone will and you can't please everyone all the time!
Seems rather petty but an American audience might find it racist. Aussies might not equate chicken to black folks but KFC certainly should know this stereotype and they're an American company.

KFC was not showing the ad in the USA. The company should be aware of the attitudes in the target environment and not assume what is good/bad at home will be the same there. I would not expect a company to be considerate of stereotypes held in Australia when making ads for the USA or any other market
BTW, is there a stereotype that offends anyone as an American? Not subculture stereotypes...but those an Americans in general. I don't like the "Ugly American" stereotype, but am not offended by it. What name are Americans called that offends? Yankee? I can think of none?

Some people wake up in the morning and it becomes their quest to try to find things that offends them.
I did not see anything racist in the clip. However, I am a white-Christian-American-male-gun owner. That alone makes my evaluation suspect.

Rule of thumb for future reference, Blacks can not be used in commercials for Fried chicken, watermelons, crime or welfare.
-
Or birth control!
;)
Tim, the truth is that, like KFC, the majority of planned parenthood clinics are in black neighborhoods.

I grew up in the deep south and never quite figured where the stereotype comes from with the fried chicken and watermelon. They are two of my favorite things..... and are to almost any other white southerner.
Hell, now I feel discriminated against for the lack of recognition.
;D

That's something, coming from our resident "progressive".
You might want to bear in mind FQ, the people who give you the most crap for being a college brainwashed liberal mostly live in the North, and the socialist "educators" who warped your thinking were all in the South or West.

Only if you mean it in a TR sort of way, and even then, I have issues with the man. ;D

No I mean "communist", just like you thought. ;D
Progressive has been used interchangeably with communist since the days of Marx, another one you want to watch out for is "Democratic". Take note of the countries that use "Democratic" in their proper names, none of them are places I'd want to live.

Sledgemeister,
Depending who you voted for, everything you say will be said to be racist or fascist. They are quickly becoming meaningless terms here in the USA. I hope the Aussies don't follow this direction. IMHO both racisim and fascism are very deplorable beliefs and to bandy around the term when there is no intent numbs folks to when they do occur.
I thought it was KFE over there? Kentucky Fried Emu ;)
-
Ratcatcher, there is plenty of "intent" and a perfectly obvious motive.
They are intended to demonize any one who disagrees with the "communist in chief" because that socialist menace happens to be half African/Arab.
They would have been up sh!t creek if if a white communist got elected ;D
And do not buy into the PC BS about "Fascism" the primary belief held in common by ALL the "Fascist states" was hatred of communism, only 2 (Germany and Japan ) believed that "master Race " crap.

Tom,
1) Sorry I was not clear. The intent of the ad was not rascist.
2) Fascism puts the state over the individual. Thats wrong in my mind. Italy had the Romans ruled the world mixed in their version as well.

Don't forget the Collard Greens, Country Style Steak, and okra..
Seems the "PC" crowd got to somebody.... Where's that Mr T ad for Snickers with him on the cannon shooting the "walker"....
I think that one was pulled too.
-
Maybe I should have said that only in Germany and Japan did any one take the :master Race" crap SERIOUSLY.
There's a big difference between "Carthago Delenda est" and "The pasta must be Al Dante"
Actually Quinticillus Varus, and WWII's Gen. Graziani had a lot in common ;D
