Had to be an Annapolis Grad USN officer. I worked for one. They hate Marines. Marines are alway tracking blood and mud onto their clean ships.

Just to horrify you beyond the telling Tom, I almost did ROTC in your beloved Corps. The only thing that stopped me and caused me to go Army, (I had scholarships from both in my hands and was leaning Marine), was that the Marines, for reasons known but to God, had a pretty inflexible set of math/science requirements that the Army didn't. It would have stopped me from graduating a year early with a double major. Otherwise Tom, I wouldn't have gotten my "peace dividend buy out" and been an Officer of Marines. Yes me, at Basic School at Quantico, bad hair cut and dress Blues. You may scoff, but Marine ROTC had the same rep as Harvard. Damn hard to get into, but once you were in, it was hard to wash out. The Army was the opposite. They'd give anyone a shot, but kick you to the curb in a heart beat.

That's because the Marines are looking for GOOD MEN, not any chump that can score a scholarship.
Bear in mind FQ, it's hard to get washed out, but they make it easy for you to quit.

As it should be. Robert Heinlien had it right in "Starship Troopers". You don't serve, you don't vote. More than that, there's no draft, and you can quit any time you want up until deployment. Beyond that, you're in. That's what made me lean Marine more than Army. Hell, I never wanted to be Rambo, my MOS peference for both was the same, intel, ordinance and transport in that order. I just wanted to serve, get my scholarship, and get out. But, the tail is as important as the teeth, . I liked the ethos of the Marines, particularly on the enlisted side, but not enough to spend an extra year in school taking math classes I'd never use. Army it was, but we were, in all honesty, a flabby bunch, at least among the lower classmen who hadn't been given the two year "get the f@ck off my obstacle Pyle" eval. Upper classman to upper classman, we were fine, but feshman to freshman, the Marines kicked our ass.

Perhaps it was an honest error. Perhaps the writer got the service branch wrong. Perhaps he meant to say an Air Force Officer. I'n not sayin'... I'm just sayin' :-*

I never had the experience of any Annapolis grads. All of the officers I served with were either NROTC, OCS or just college grads with no purpose in life. Most weren't much older than I was when I seperated. Had things been different, I may have made the Navy a career.
According to statistics on colleges and universities, the most difficult colleges nationally for academics are West Point, Annapolis, the Air Force Academy and the Coast Guard Academy......

I don't disagree and don't take it that I don't like Academy grads in general. It's that there are "ring knockers" who could not lead hungry wolves to meat. The clique keeps them in their branch of service way too long. The old USNA grad I worked with, (I was not in his chain of command) was getting by on the fact he played football at the school, I think without a helmet. When it was obvious he was over his head he went to the US Secret Service. Good choice because he was large enough to stop lots of bullets and too stupid to get out of the way.
I hear the same stories from the folks in the branches of the service so I guess you just learn to accept it if you want to make that a career.
My current boss is a O-6 USNR. A good guy, smart and worked for me when he was an O-1 and O-3. He has a sense of humor and would write that letter to piss off Marines.

NO Marine I ever knew would bitch about scantily clad women. At least not until after he had left what little they were wearing laying in a pile on the floor and left the wearer in a puddle of her own sweat.

My rate wasn't prestigeous enough for Academy types. No shipboard service to speak of. Our officers in the 70's were mostly adminstrative types with degrees in Poly Sci, Accounting, who knows but they were not techincal wizards and when you're working 80-90 hours a week working with sound physics, have a few technical skills would be a plus.
About the time I seperated, the Navy finally figured it out and started promoting from within and taking E-6, E-7's and E-8's and making them LDO's. A bunch of my old buddies mustanged into the leadership rolls that made things much easier to deal with. No longer did you have to take some 23 year old girl with an accounting degree and try and get them to understand what the deep sound channel axis was or identify an Alpha running at 30 knots under the ice cap. You had seasoned analysts running the operations and commands.
One friend of mine started E-1, did 34 years and retired in '07 as an O-6.

Not neccesarily for "quality" of academics, there you want to look at MIT and the like. In terms of selectivity, how hard it is to get in, the Coast Guard Academy has long been tops. Its something like one out of 100 make it. It makes Harvard look like a safety school. ;D

Didn't mean to sound so harsh....everyone is welcome here. My point, though poorly verbalized, was that the job I was doing would have been better suited to officers with engineering degrees with heavy physics backgrounds. There are fine officers that come out of the ROTC programs. Nearly 50% of commisioned active duty officers today come from ROTC. Non of my officers were bad administrators. Once we E-5's taught them HOW to do the job, they would eventually catch up!

No problem with AF ROTC, No problem with Political Science majors as long as you don't believe the crap the socialist professors are feeding you. If you take their propaganda as gospel you will get kicked around like a Fighting Quaker ;D

see. there you guys go sticking your heads in the gutter. who ever said anything about doing anything 'wrong'? remember, sailors are well known for their drinking abilities as well. ;D .I go ashore for a few ice cold beverages whenever I get the chance. when in Guam we have access to the ship 24 hours a day (no curfew or launch to catch) and so sometimes show up just in time to start work. ;D :o :P ;D depends on the port as to how stupid we get. going to Singapore in a few days! :D
