Spoke with my sister tonight in MN. She's retired (early, no fault of her own) and without health insurance because she's not eligible for Medicare/Medicaid yet and currently has some health issues. Nothing serious but she could use some good thoughts and prayers.
I was so proud when I mentioned how much SHE could benefit from some form of universal coverage and she replied; "I could sure use some healthcare, but not at the expense and damage it could do to my country!"......
If you could take a moment and say a blessing for my big Sis, Jamie Lee, I would appreciate it..
Thanks,

Thoughts are with your sis and family from IA! Get better soon T-Sis

Can she try to get SSDI? (Social Security Disability Ins.), usually it takes a lawyer, but I pray for her health and hope she stays well.

Can she try to get SSDI?
I asked her the same question. She will be 65 in September so her benefits kick in, but she hasn't gotten a firm diagnosis yet. She's trying to get into a specialist.
When I fought to get SSI for my wife, it took me two years to get it approved and it wasn't easy. I know an attorney would have been easier but at the time I didn't have the resources. Neither does she at the moment but she has two grown daughters in the twin cities who are wonderful kids and can help.

My prayers are with her!

She's on the list Timothy! At least she's in Minnesota, where she won't make the system any worse if she gets help.

Has she tried Minnesota Care? It is taxpayer subsidized insurance. I'm paying for it so somebody should get some use out it.

Yes but she said it's 175 bucks a month with a $10,000 deductible before they start covering services. The premiums are cheap enough but the deductible is a killer. I'm checking into this because I think she's been misinformed by the boneheads that answer the phones. It appears that the 10K limit is on inpatient hospital stays.

If she had health coverage on her job, she might be eligible for COBRA coverage. COBRA coverage is currently being subsidized for 65% of the cost. She might be able to swing the payments.
Let her take this subsidy without guilt, she has paid for others to be helped and she certainly doesn't have the "entitlement" mentality.

She's already used her entire Cobra benefit. I just talked to her, woke her up as a matter of fact and sent her some information on the Minnesota Care that Watchman mentioned. She's gonna take another look at it and your right, she's been paying into the system for the last 45 years, she might as well take advantage of the benefit.

COBRA benefits have been extended until you reach Medicare age...at least for me, but maybe cause it is only a handful of years till then...and my reduced COBRA benefits ran out at the end of December, but I was just notified that they extended the reduced benefits until August.
She might want to check to see if there has been a change in her status also.
Hoping for the best for her.

Update;
Just got an email from Sis. She managed to buy a short term, affordable "gap" health plan to get her to September when, as she puts it, "she's officially OLD!" and gets on the medicare/medicaid roles. She still doesn't know what her ailment is but they're working on it. She's getting by and working part time to fill the void in time and money.
thanks for the thoughts....
