Obama vowed a "forceful response," working with lawmakers in both parties. Republican allies may be hard to find, other than Sen. John McCain, who said he was disappointed in the ruling.

Texas Sen. John Cornyn, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Congress never managed to impede the influence of money in politics anyway.
The ruling leaves intact the ban on soft money, precluding corporate contributions to parties and individual candidates. But it will let corporations spend as much as they want independently to influence elections.
