How many of you have read John Ross' Unintended Consequences and what did you think of it?
-
Read it.
Loved it.
Wish the real answer was that easy...
-
I loved every page.... every gun owner should have two copies..... one to keep for themselves and one to send to their favorite politician....
-
I read it once a year, at least. I consider it the best book written in the past 20 years. I have also given away or sold a half dozen copies and let several dozen people read it. EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK, it is plan #1 for the coming counter-revolution!
-
I'd never heard of it and the only versions that Amazon has are over $100. Where do you get it?
-
Read it twice.

Wow.... I knew that there was only one printing in hardcover, but I had no idea it was sold out and they were getting 100 to 200 bucks for it.... I guess I should track my copy down, as I have lent it to nearly everyone I know.
WE NEED TO GET THIS BOOK IN PRINT AGAIN..... NOW MORE THAN EVER!
Michael Bane, you have experience with publishing and re-releasing books, and you know John Ross. Do you have any info on a second printing of UC? Any info would be much appreciated....
Regards,
Scott

FQ,
It is a very large and sweeping novel with many factual historical accounts of exactly how America got so screwed up with gun laws. Did you know that MacArthur, Patton and Eisenhower commanded US troops that attacked and killed veterans and children just outside Washington DC and ordered their only homes burned to the ground? Did you know that the NFA was tried in the Supreme Court with only the feds there and no one to oppose them? This book shows convincing evidence to the insanity of every gun law since the 2ND A....
It also has a lot of history about exhibition shooters and firearms... The second half of the book sets up a scenario where the ATF pushes too far and some of the best shooters in the US decide to push back.... Hard....

There is no nutshell description! It is a 42 pound book about the size of the Gutenberg Bible. I was fortunate enough to get it last year at regular price. I started reading it, but set it aside to finish a few other books first. However, I have heard from many that even though it is a large and long book it is well worth it and reads much shorter than it appears.
After reading the first chapter before setting it aside I am anxiously waiting to dive in ... It is actually on my reading table at this time!
-
I did not know that Ike was involved but I knew that MacArthur was in overall command (Army Chief of Staff IIRC ) and Patton was the commander on the ground when the Army broke up the "Hooverville" set up by the Bonus Marchers.

Ike was the liaison with the Washington Police....
When I find out who the heck has my copy It'll let you know if you want to read it.....

Thanks, I'd very much like to read it.

It'll make a gun nut out of you! ;D

This is my all time favorite novel. It's hard to believe John Ross kept his day job and hasn't written another book.

It has been rumored that Henry's Bowman's escapades were to continue in a new novel, but alas I have heard that Mr. Ross has some medical issues... I would love to have Bowman become a character like Clancy's Jack Ryan but I don't think that's going to happen. UC was hampered by the physical size of the book, making it a very popular and beloved book, but not a cash cow for the publisher or author by information and belief.
However, if I may presume to make a suggestion, if the book is unprofitable to PRINT, perhaps an E-book priced around 10-17 dollars US would be..... Bears some thought, but it depends on the legal contract Mr. Ross made with the original publisher... It would definitely put a crimp in the pockets of the SCALPERS that are selling such a great book for such exorbitant prices without ANY BENEFIT to the man who labored to create it.....
Cheers,
Scott

I found a PDF version, but I'm sure that can't be legal and I would really hate to read an 800 page novel on a computer screen. Is there a paperback?
-
yeah, if you print out that PDF file.
Your local libary has a copy. I can't beleave the prices people are asking for this book. With that much profit to be made, I have no idea why its not being reprinted.

You did? Where?
TAB, how did you get that pic of my girlfriend's bum for your Avatar? That was supposed to be private... ;D

John Ross was interviewed on a website and this shows how good this book is;
What has been your proudest moment as a writer?
There were a number of good memories, such as getting my first four-figure check, seeing the pallets of bound copies of my novel at the publisher's warehouse, doing my first public book signing, and getting asked to address a discussion club for the first time.
However, these all pale compared to what happened when I listened to my voicemail messages one day and heard the following message:
[Agitated woman] "John Ross? Is this thing recording? I just thought you'd like to know that you and your goddamn book have ruined my honeymoon. Probably my marriage, too. I can't believe my-" [muffled sound, a second voice, faint, as if a hand is over the receiver, then the hand being pried off] "Give me that... you bastard, you haven't
even-" [more muffled noises, then a man's voice on the phone:
[Man] "Mr. Ross?"
[The woman, from several feet away] "It's his answering machine."
[Man] "Oh." [relieved] "Uh...Mr. Ross, this is, uh, well, never mind my name, but-"
[Woman in background, yelling] "His name's _________! [name deleted for privacy]
[Man] "Yeah, uh it's_________, that's right. Uh, Mr. Ross, I'm kind of on my honeymoon, and-"
[Woman, screaming now] "KIND OF on your honeymoon?" [muffled sound of hand covering receiver, alternating screaming and soothing tones, but I can't make out the words]
[Man] "Listen, I started reading your book on the plane 'cause it was a four hour flight, you know, and now I just can't put it down. And it's pretty long, you know, so I'm still not finished, and my wife, well, I haven't been paying enough attention to her, and-"
[Woman, screaming loud enough for me to hear even though the man quickly covers the mouthpiece again] "IT'S THE SECOND DAY OF OUR HONEYMOON AND YOU HAVEN'T EVEN FUCKED ME YET!"
[Man] Um, I guess you heard that, Mr. Ross. Look, everything's going to be okay, I'm almost finished with it and I can't tell you how much I'm enj- GIVE ME THAT BACK RIGHT NOW!" [Sound of scuffle and phone being hung up].
I got a follow-up call a day later, where the husband assured me that everything was all right and his wife wasn't going to file for an annulment.

the publisher currently has the book for $60 a copy GRAB IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually John Ross continues his day job as an investment counselor. In addition to the book he wrote, he is an avid gun collector, was instrimental (SP?) in Missouri passing concealed carry, and teaches cc classes frequently (taught my class). His web site (johnross.net) explains why he hasn't written more. His class is very entertaining, and when he produces a S&W .500 revolver from concealment it is down right shocking (Thunderwear, I believe). He even designed a version of the S&W that he sells off of his site.

We have read it several times and loved it all.
I am surprised that nobody mentioned all the trouble that JR had after UC was released. Evidently the ATF/FBI were going around to bookstores and intimidating them into not carrying the book. There were some other funny things that were going on as well, I just can't remember exactly what.
Even though my copy is worth that, it is going nowhere.. :)

I guess its banned in Canada and will be seized at the border too!
If they can do that then when Tom and TT win in 2012 they should ban Bryant Adam's and Celine Dionne CDs.... ;D
-
I have nothing against Celine Dion's CD's but her PICTURES EEEK !
She's aged about 100 years since Titanic.

Most women age like a fine wine. Celine has aged like milk.
-
Celine Dion's head is too big for her body. Like a bobblehead.
-
Never expected this thread to turn into a Celine Dion bashing thread.... I could care less what she looks like, its her milquetoast Canadian music that offends me the most! ;D
-
From John Ross to Celine Dion.....now that IS thread drift right there......... ;D

You know I think this is a great book but I cant believe what some people are paying for it. I paid $25 for it new at the local gun show. I think I saw it recently for $30, but I'm going to make an effort to look again at the next show.

There was a ep of Shooting Gallery with John Ross a few years go. I just checked Amazon, and I bought my copy back in June of 2007 for $28.95
The book 1/2 history lesson, and half speculative fiction. A good read. I believe Mr Ross is very close to his book's protagonist.
