I ask this question not so much to seek advice, but to get an idea of peoples views on guns. I bought a 10/22 when I was 14 back in '84. It was the first gun I ever paid for myself with lawn work money ($110 if I recall). The thing is stock and cherry. I traded away my Remington Nylon 66 on a Glock and it is now my only .22 LR. What do I do to it? I've owned it for 25 years. Its time (maybe) for an upgrade. What would you add and why. It is a plinker and very occasional small game rifle. Lets ignore money here. I want to know what you would do with something in the back of your safe that you decided to get out and refurbish and why. I am particulary interested in optics (my eyes not being what they were when I was 14), but barrels, stocks, trigger groups etc. are not to be ignored. If it were your gun, what would you do assuming a limited budget?

It was the first gun you paid for, and it will never be a high dollar gun. However, it is a good utility gun and has sentimental value.
Priceless - keep it, shoot it, enjoy it, and pass it down to your family with a journal full of shooting history!
I wouldn't do any major changes. Scope, sling, etc., but nothing more. If you want to build something up go and buy something for that purpose, and keep this piece of FQ history intact.

Agreed, sling or scope, maybe some Volquardson internals that you install personally (not a gunsmith), but that's it.
I picked up a 10/22 for not more than what you paid new, but mine was at a pawn shop. I'm doing the upgrade thing, but within reason. If you want to turn your 10/22 into an MG42 or uber tacticool M-4gery, then get one you do not care about at a pawn shop or private sale, and do it. Leave the heirloom alone.

Two, offered for sale on this very board. Nice rifles, but I just wasn't using them. I had the butter knife handle mauser bolt version as well and gave that away to my goddaughter. Great guns, and I would highly reccomend them.
FQ13 who probably should have kept one, but if you don't shoot it, why own it?

I can't help you out with optics as I am an iron sight kinda guy. I have always loved the irons on my stock 10/22. However, here a couple of things that I highly recommend for someone wanting to stay stock'ish with their 10/22.
Call ruger and order one of the new style extended mag releases. It costs 5 bucks and makes plinking a little easier. While you are on the phone with them, have them send you a trimag. It is a neat little device that connect three mags in a triangle pattern offering quicker reloads for plinking but the same great ultra reliability of the rotary mag.
Next, go to rimfiresports.com and order a Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor. My Ruger Standard and 10/22 had both seen enough rounds that I was getting stovepipes in every mag. The Exact Edge cleared that problem up nicely and I will continue to recommend it to anyone. And I recommend rimfiresports.com because the price is comparable to everyone else but they offer free shipping.
If you want to stay stock style, those are the only changes that I would make and I would put the rest of the budget into Federal bulk pack from walmart.
My next 10/22 will be purchased soon and is going to start with a Nodak Spud receiver, Kidd trigger group and bolt, most like a tactical solutions barrel and is going to end up around a grand or more after I get the stock and everything. the great thing about the 10/22 to me is the endless array of possible builds. Sniper style, tactical, ar ish, its all possible with this rifle and there are even some pretty cool bullpup kits starting to pop up.

I have 2 10/22's my wifes, stock with a trigger job, extended mag release, a weaver mount, to replace the stock 3/8's" rail, leupold 3x9. Nice gun, for rabbits and squirrels and such. Mine, shilen barrel, trigger job, extended mag release, unfinished Fajen thumb hole stock, modified to allow the bolt to be released by just pulling the bolt back and releasing it, without using the dumb release that is factory. Part of the trigger job is a set screw for overtravel. Different glass at different times, With a weaver mount, as it was used for the Chevy Team challenge.
Common thread, just like 1911's, good trigger, good sighting system, nice mag release as the factory does make you yawn, the modified bolt release is cool. If you want a good inexpensive trigger, the Clark is the way to go, great improvement over factory, same with the bolt release conversion. The Kidd is a fantastic trigger as is the jewel, but they cost more than the gun did, in a game sit rep, well you want the best, but for a hunter/plinker, the Clark is nice, Volquartsen is over priced compared to Clark for very similiar results. Once you have eliminated the main drawbacks, like trigger pull and sights, then definitely play with ammo selection, a stock ruger is capable of very decent accuracy at 50 yrds. 3/8 to 1/2" . MIne loves the Winchester 42 grn power points, now mine are no longer available as they were made in aussieland, and the factory burned down, and I have no opinion of the reintroduced power point now made here, it was a Keith looking 42 grn semi-wadcutter hollow point with a lot of driving bands, I think this was what made them shoot so well.

Enjoy it as is, and keep it that way. I have the 10/22 with stainless barrel, and polymer stock, bunch of Butler Creek Mags, and a fat variable cheap scope. It is a ball to shoot, and I won't change it.
HOWEVER, I have occasionally checked out pawn shops, shows, etc,.. for a used one in decent condition, and convert it into a Luke Skywalker version. (Minus the Marshal'ette Purple), and really race it up, but still looking.
But for posterity, keep yours the way it is, trigger job, mag release,... great, but it's a 10/22. That's why they have been around so long.

I would leave it stock and get a differant one to modify. Any changes I would make to this rifle would be fully reversible and I would keep all stock parts. If you must tinker with this one, I would look at some of the things being done in the Superstock section of

I think I would keep it stock, being as it was your first gun and I think Ruger's were of a better quality back then. I would find something like that from my grandfather worth a lot me personally in the original condition!

I'd highly recommend creating a "Liberty Training Rifle" with it. It becomes a great training rifle for high power shooting or good practical marksmanship. Here's what you need:
- a 10/22 (you already have it)
- TechSights - an absolute must...these replicate AR15 or M1A sights. Absolutely worth the investment
- extended mag release - necessary to make reasonably fast mag changes
- GI web sling - a must to learn to shoot with a sling...a lost art but really necessary if you want to REALLY learn to shoot a rifle
- Volquartsen trigger / internals -- not necessary but really worth the cost. Drop in components that will create a sweet trigger on your 10/22
- Volquartsen bolt release - again not necessary but will allow you to drop the bolt simply by pulling it back
- New stock -- again, not necessary but I wanted a new one
This is a great rifle to train with, intro new shooters, shoot an Appleseed or just plink around...and it isn't the run of the mill 10/22 but it also isn't gaudy. The Liberty Rifle is the 5th one down in the picture below
