This is 57 year old Alain Castellana driving a hill climb in Europe. He's got rocks on one side, and a cliff on the other. If he misses he's dead. No shifter paddles either. His hand goes to the stick for every gear change. Why no one ever picked this guy up in F-1 is beyond me. He drives a ton ! Bill T.

She would put someone into the wall and try to blame them and then pout.

Another thing to remember that many people don't realize, is he's got to memorize every corner and entry line! Bill T.

I'll watch Danica Patrick do almost anything ;D
I'm SO glad the wife doesn't come on here

Have been a hard and fast driver all my driving life...
I appreciate the talent and skill he demonstrated and loved the feeling of being in the cockpit...could almost feel the Gs....

I would watch Danica do ANYTHING

Let's see Alain Castellana do this!

More of Alain at over 150 MPH. This time he's got trees, guard rails, and phone poles to deal with. This guy is unbelievable! After listening to this video, you can actually hear how much taller the car is geared to this course which is much flatter and faster. Bill T.

Makes drive it like ya' stole it, take on a whole new meaning. :o
Although Danica has some nice curves as well. 8)

But sadly I am afraid she will never be anything more then the Anna Kournikova of racing................ Looks great. Cant race.

It's really too bad. She really raced well in Toyota Atlantic. Went up against the best of her colleagues like J.D. Allmendinger and the like. Bobby Rahal found her in go karts. She got cocky, and developed an attitude very early on. It has been reported she will not even speak to Rahal anymore. She seems to be just another twisted, arrogant bitch. I really don't know why, because she is just what racing has been looking for. Good looking, with some developmental talent. Now it's as if she's on minute 14 of an Andy Warhol film. Too bad, I thought I was looking at a woman who could actually race, not a charlatan the likes of Hussein. Katherine Legge has already surpassed her, and was fortunate enough to survive a wreck like this:

I happen to see this accident live, and commented to Melanie I thought she was dead. Then, to find out she actually WALKED AWAY almost put me into tears. She is a True Racer! She got right back into the car the next week, like nothing ever happened. There are a lot of NASCAR guys who were not able to do that. All you hear today is DANICA. It's all crap! Bill T.
-
They said viewership was up 60% during the Nationwide race just because people wanted to see her wreck.
Or run from the car stripping her clothes off ala Ricky Bobby.
How'd he get down to his underwear that quick?

I've seen some specials on the Indy GP cars and the engineering that goes into them. Things have changed, like before you could not touch the engine oil or tranny fuid, now you can replace the entire tranny in the middle of the race in a medium length pit stop. As seen in the video, the entire body is a crumple zone, designed to disintegrate and protect the driver doing it. Glad it worked for Legge.
Unlike the days of Ken Miles, Dan Gurney and Jimmy Clark (RIP), drivers today sit well down inside the roll cage, the fuel tanks do not even burn, let alone explode, and if Clark or Miles had been using a car like the ones today instead of the F2 car Clark was driving at Nurburgring or the Ford J-car that Miles was driving, both would most likely still be alive today.

If I were to attempt racing like Alain, I would have to have Jockey as a sponsor. I would, without a doubt, be required to change my underwear more often than my tires. :-[

Danica has one major hurdle to overcome ... her sex! I don't mean that a woman can't drive, because she has proven that she can. However, she is like that undefeated team that everyone wants to knock off, or the team with no wins that no one wants to lose to. No matter how good she is or how well she does, everyone else will turn it up a notch to get her.
Now back to my true maturity level ... Nothing like Danica climbing out of her driving suit at the end of a long and hot race ;D

It’s also her biggest asset because it draws sponsors. Ask anybody who is trying to start a race team, getting sponsor money is the prime directive.
Is she ever going to be a great racing driver? I doubt it (see Janet Guthrie) but you would be stupid not to want her driving on your team because she will bring in millions of dollars and tens of thousands of fans.

Actually, the racing part is kinda cool. I grew up in the heyday of hill climbs, small local events with folks running MGAs, TR-3s, Tigers and the like. With trees right at the edge of the pavement. That's where I cut my driving teeth. So I was reliving some cool days from my misspent youth watching these videos. Of course, growing up on old iron (4s through 8s) hearing these modern engines whine and scream is a little unnerving.
I was watching Alain and noting his line through the course. Notice he doesn't follow the road so much as find the straightest possible line through the curves. On the S-curves, he barely moved the wheel, but let the car take a single line from one side of the track to the other and back to the first.
The great Stirling Moss was involved in a horrible accident in one race, took six months to get to the point where he could walk with crutches. He took a Jag out on the course at Brookstone IIRC, ran speeds over 150mph, and when he brought the car in announced he was retiring. As a kid I could not understand that, but my Dad explained that - between the accident itself and the enforced time off - it was about his reflexes being gone.
I always promised myself I would attend the Bondurant School of High Performance Driving for one of my birthdays, but life kinda intervened and I never made it. But I never lost the taste for the maneuvers at speed. All my cars until recently have been manual trannies, and I rejected buying a Mazda 626 in the 90s because the differentially sized drive shafts off the transverse engine made the car skittish at speed through a corner. Scared the crap out of the sales guy tho. And that was in town. ;D
So now I get my grand-daughter to go "Whee!!" as I slalom at high speed through the S-curve at the entrance to the development. Her Mom and Grandma want to bail out the doors, but my baby girl and I are having a ball!!! ;D ;D ;D

She's there!
You don't just show up, or just get hired to drive. You have to prove yourself to have the right to run with the big dogs. She paid dues to get to this point, and now she is paying her dues to cement a respectable legacy.

I think the biggest objection most have is her whining, temperamental attitude. It's always the other guys fault with her. That gets real old, real fast. Her temper tantrums and constant bitching detract from any real talent she possess. Guys like her because she's hot, and some women like her simply because she's a woman. And there it pretty much ends.
I grew sick of her after her first Indy qualifying attempt when she bobbled a bit, and missed getting the pole. She still had an excellent run all things considered, but she acted like a spoiled child who didn't get the birthday present she wanted. And that time she was walking back to the pits literally stomping her feet ! Give me a break. She needs to grow up, fast. I can't imagine what her poor husband has to go through with her, being Mr. Danica Patrick. Sometimes the fruit isn't worth the effort of the pick, if you know what I mean. Bill T.

Gosh, Path, same thing with me and Bondurant's school. I really wanted to practice doing a 180 at speed, tooling along backwards and then doing another 180 to get going forward in the direction I started...and all in my lane on the road.
I did do half of that maneuver when I hit a flood of water from a ruptured water truck on the other side of the I71. Hit it doing near 80 and the car, a 84 300ZX Turbo spun. I got it under control and sent it down an exit ramp backwards..very gently working the brakes. The woman I was with said she was scared to death before I started telling her every move and observation I was making...and guided the car backwards into the hill at the side of the ramp doing 10mph....no damage to anyone or anything.
Sigh...still have a 2000 Z28 I drive...but not with the verve of 20 years ago...

Yes you do. If your the second or third driver on the team your goal is DON'T BREAK THE CAR!
There are plenty of drivers that are just out turning laps hoping everybody in front of them breaks or crashes. Then there is big group that just doesn't want to dink the car.
In the late 70's I used to work the corners at Circuit St Jovite for the John Russell Driving School. It was easy to see who came to race and who came to play race car driver. There were young drivers like Jaques and Gil Vileneuve, Scott Goodyear and Dick Dodge who held Pikes Peak unlimited record for years. After a day of F4 racing we would go to go cart track and race carts till the police showed up. They would race anything!
It was very impressive to see them drive.

I don't know who this guy is, or where the race is being held for that matter, but he sure as hell makes up for a lousy qualifying spot! Count how many guys he passes on the first lap! Bill T.

Wow...great segment....
Often they will have several classes in the same race. I am guessing that is what was happening here since he totally outclasses so many of the other entries early on...
Bookmarking that one to watch before each trip to the grocery...

I don't think she's mastered that part of racing yet....or she's planning to change over to the demolition derby circuit.... :D

Ashley Force has Danica beat 11 ways to Sunday. Better looking. Better person. You can tell by the guys they married. Ashley's husband is a down to Earth nice guy. Someone you would want your daughter to marry. Danica's husband is a subservient a$$ kisser. He has to be. Bill T.
