Lets keep the "I hate cops" posts to a minimum.

Police looking for officer’s missing rifle
By Lucas Sullivan | Monday, February 15, 2010, 11:08 AM

DAYTON - Dayton police are looking for an officer-issued rifle missing that might have fallen off the roof of an officer’s car Sunday, Feb. 14, police said.

Officers were called to the 2700 block of Wayne Avenue about 11:20 p.m. Sunday to investigate the missing rifle after the officer coming on duty at 4 p.m. noticed it was missing, the report stated.

The officer missing the gun was not named in the report and Major Mark Hess declined to release his name this morning.

“The officer recalled placing it on the roof of his cruiser as he inspected and prepared his cruiser/equipment for his tour of duty,” Hess said. “We are looking into whether he drove off with it still on the roof or if it was taken from atop the roof.”

If any wrongdoing is found, the officer will be disciplined, Hess said.

The gun is described as a Rock Rivers A15 .223 caliber rifle, the report stated. It is valued at about $800, Hess said. The gun’s serial number has been entered into a nationwide crime database, Hess said.

If anyone knows the gun’s whereabouts, you are urged to call 333-COPS.

Check lists and a change in habits...

I have my Private Pilots license and did the full checklist every time I prepared for a flight.  I was in a group going through some training and the trainer asked if there were any private pilots in the group.  He was trying to emphasize using the checklist.  I raised my had and he asked if I would skip the checklist when preparing for the flight.  The look on my face had folks chuckling.  The thought of skipping it was shocking to me...

A "before you turn the key, release the break, put it in gear" check list with All weapons in place would do the trick.

Habits...  I have driven off with several things on the top of my car, mostly coffee cups, but once a wallet with $300 cash inside.

I changed my habit to placing things on the windshield or the hood in front of the drivers seat instead of the roof.  A couple of 'Oh Chits" but no driving off with forgotten items up top any more.

An officer I knew years ago was off duty and was carring his pistol out to his car with a bunch of other stuff and his kids. In the process of loading kids and stuff into his car he placed his pistol on top of the car. When he returned home and was unloading kids and stuff he couldn't find his pistol. the officer was devastated knowing his pistol had more than likely fallen into the wrong hands.
He shared this with everyone on the dept. so we could learn from his experience.

At least he didn't drive away with a baby on the roof of his car. It's happened over a dozen times. http://www.snopes.com/autos/mishaps/babyroof.asp

call 333-cops? How about 1 (800) 1free-AR. "I paid for it,  and the officer obviously can't be trusted with it, it's perfectly just your honor". ;D

Everyone makes mistakes......But in this case, the consequences are just a tad bit higher. Hope someone just turns it in and keeps it out of the "wrong" hands....

If any ne'er-do-well stumbled across it and knew what he was doing or what he had, he would have "gutted" it out already, sold the upper by itself, sold the stock, stripped the trigger parts out of the lower and then tossed that lower into a river or lake.  I am guessing since it was for LE it might have been equipped with a giggle switch.  Jeessh....that would be really bad ju ju to be a civilian caught with a selective fire or fully automatic weapon, and a stolen LE serialized one at that.   :o

I've done the rooftop trick with a couple of cups of coffee and one expensive leather notebook.  Never with a weapon (unless you count the damning information contained in the notebook). ;) ;D ;) ;D  One of the coffee tricks really annoyed me as it was a favorite mug and it put a nice ding in my trunk lid before shattering into a gazillion pieces on the street behind me. ::)

This reminds me of a story from back in my high school days, (circa 1969). There was a dance being held at a social club not far from the high school. They had a "Rent-A-Cop" there who happened to be the head of the juvenile division of the local P.D. This guy was known for being a real a$$hat.

Anyway, all of the guys from the wrestling team were there, and had brought booze in and spiked the punch. They were also drinking from 1/2 pints they carried in their suit coats. This cop found out about it when he caught one of the guys taking a swig outside. This was back in the days of smoking, but only outside. He immediately put on the attitude and unleashed on the guy, telling him to "stand against the wall" while he was going to cuff him. These guys had enough of him at this point and came from behind and jumped him. This cop went face first into the ground like he was hit with a cattle prod! He never saw it, or them coming. They pulled his jacket over his head, took his gun away from him, and proceeded to kick the living crap out of him.

Everyone but the guys administering the a$$ kicking took off. When they were finished with him, they all took off. For the next couple of weeks they all took turns calling his house from pay phones all over town taunting him and telling him "hey, we love your gun!" Everyone knew who did it except him, and no one gave them up. I was called into my deans office later that week, as were many of us. We all gave the same "I didn't see nutin" reply.

A few months later they took a hammer to his revolver, (Colt Detective Special with a non shrouded barrel), wiped all of the parts clean with gasoline, and sent them to him in a shoebox. No one was ever caught. Even the kid he caught with the booze he couldn't positively identify because it was pitch dark. He had an idea, but the guy wouldn't budge. He got a much needed attitude adjustment that night. Shortly after that he retired. He was quite the laughing stock after that incident. Moral of story: Don't mess with drinking wrestlers who just want to have fun!   Bill T.

Second moral. High school wrestlers get shot. Survivors doing ten years. You reach for a cops (or my) gun and you're playing for your life. It better be worth it. As far as swarming an officer? If it had hit a judge you woud have been lucky if you were given the chance to volunteer for Vietnam.
FQ13 who was once young and stupid, but yikes! If I risk my life and that kind of jail time commiting a crime, its going to be robbing an armored car.

Cops "need" a gun at at a high school dance today. They didn't 41 years ago. I'm not supporting what they did, but back then guns at dances weren't necessary, and were never carried. High school dance chaperones do not need to be armed. These guys simply removed his attitude, along with his weapon, and perhaps in the process gave him a reason to carry it the next time. Of course he had to buy a new one.   Bill T.

Along these same lines...

I was at a football game in highschool and one of the school jokesters tip toed up behind a cop who was talking to the band director. The kid was dancing and goofing on the cop behind his back and the cop had no idea what was going on.... after a while the kid decided it would be fun to slip his night stick out of his belt and twirl it behind the cop's back. Sure enough, it went off without a hitch and the cop had no idea until the band director pointed it out to him. It was funny to see the look of shame on the cop's face.

All  true, but can you imagine how prized a trophy that would be for a banger?

On this we agree, FQ.

On this we agree, FQ.

Rather than FQ's Armored Car, how about we stuff a few ballot boxes and get your dog registered to vote ?

One advantage to big, tall, gas hog trucks, and vans, for that matter... It's harder to reach the roof so you don't get in the habit of putting junk on the top of the truck. ;D
