Just got the new American Rifleman. Cover has "Long Range Affordability" featuring the Savage 110BA .338 Lapua Magnum
OMG!!! :o
(http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm182/twyacht/3548.jpg)
Less than the new Bushmaster, and several others in the AR category. Bolt action repeating action, 4140 chrome-moly steel,
29 1/2" barrel 1:9 . Single stage 2.4oz trigger, yes it's a heavy girl at 15 lbs.
suggested retail $2200.00
effective range 1500m
at 300yds. it hits with over 5,000 lbs of muzzle energy. using a Cor-Bon 250gr. HPBT bullet. :o
billt, you need to get one your self.,..... ;) I am.,.... Holy Smokes batman,.. forget Close quarter stuff. I will be selling some antique pottery to add to the kitty for this one.
I can;t afford a Barret, or MacMillan but this? It's very possible...

Gun lust, I'm a sucker. I'll have to get out of S. Florida to test drive it properly, but well, unreal rifle.
-
UT OH...why did they have to make it affordable? Well, that IS the Savage business plan. Need to see if it is as accurate as the Savage rep has their stuff.
I have two Savage rifles and now I want a third...
Well, I'll have some time to work that into the financial picture, waiting for the price to drop a bit after the initial demand fades...I hope.
Now I'll need to find a new range. Mine only goes to 300yds...
Hmmm...Wonder if this would meet M'ette's needs for a Sniper Rifle?
-
I hope they don't have one at the NRA Convention in May,....I may sell my truck, and buy a bus ticket home....
Pretty sure I won;t have any "issues" on the ride... ;D

Sweet gun and I do like Savage. If I hadn't been a lefty I'd have felt like a chump for buying a Ruger, when my friend (who is no better a shot than me)consistently scored tighter groups than me with his 110 at about 2/3 the price. >:( Still, two questions.
1 how much pottery will you have to sell to put a worthy piece of glss on it, much less buy ammo?
2 Where the hell are you going to shoot it unless you go off shore and shoot at floating bleach bottles?
FQ13 who hates to be a buzz kill, but thinks you'd be happier (and richer) with that Sharps you were eyeing. Just my .02.

I have had a fading antique pottery fetish for the last three years. In the 10-12 years prior to that, I have what amounts to an antique store. Rookwood, Van Briggle, Hampshire, Roseville, Marblehead, McCoy, Fulper, Weller, Hull, geez,....It's very sad, I have too much of this crap. All American, and from the 1840's to about 1955.
There is a group that collects this stuff like old Colt SAA pistols, Browning Hi-Powers, vintage shotguns, etc,...
I will have to find a range far away from where I am, as it would be like having a Formula 1 race car for a trip around the driveway,. :-\
Ammo, would be reasonable as I won't need 5000rds of it. (At least not now). Having 500 rds. of .338 would be plenty for me.
Even if the SHTF, sending 50 of these downrange would get anyone's attention. (Plus their vehicles would be stopped far away), thus making them walk... ::)
Just time for a shift in "materialistic things", I'll keep my Frank Rothenbush Rookwood from 1881, with Vellum Glaze, I paid $350 in 2002, and turned down almost $750 in 2008. My Louis Abel Rookwood, is about $450... I can get there quick...
Better than a mid life crises, and wanting a red convertible.... 8)

Awesome rifle, just got my American Rifleman in the mail yesterday... and guess what's on the cover??
Welcome to the long range club. ;D

That's a nice rifle, and will no doubt be another winner for Savage. I already have a Weatherby Accumark in .338-378 Weatherby Magnum.
(http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/5562/newgunphotos0094af.th.jpg) (http://img122.imageshack.us/my.php?image=newgunphotos0094af.jpg) (http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/8531/newgunphotos0089zz.th.jpg) (http://img122.imageshack.us/my.php?image=newgunphotos0089zz.jpg)
Granted, while it doesn't have the killer, "Tacticool" look of the Savage, the ballistics of the .338-378 Weatherby Magnum are actually a bit better. The other issue with the .338 Lapua is brass and ammo. It is extremely difficult to find, and very expensive when you do. An MSRP of $2,200.00 should put it on Cabela's rack for right around $1,900.00 and change.
I'll bet they'll have one in a few weeks. Some time ago when Savage had just come out with the Model 10 BAT/S-K in .308
http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/10BATSK
which looks very similar to this rifle, one of the salesman there told me that Cabela's pays cash up front for all of their guns. When you see a gun at Cabela's it is already bought and paid for by them. No other dealer in the industry does this. What Cabela's gets in return is first crack from the distributors at the very latest guns. When Sig Sauer just announced their brand new gas piston AR-15 rifle, Cabela's had 2 on the rack the very next day! It was weeks before any gun shop in town could even order them.
Recoil of this rifle should be very manageable. With 15 pounds, (add another 2 pounds of scope and mounts), and that nice brake, it won't be an uncomfortable weapon to fire. Melanie has shot my .50 BMG Bushmaster. It weighs around 32 pounds, and has a very large clam shell type brake. My Savage 110 FCP-K is in .300 Win. Mag. and has a brake similar to this weapon. It is also very soft on the shoulder. Bill T.

Midway dealer price on .338 Lapua brass is $255.99 @ hundred.
By contrast Midway dealer price on .50 BMG per hundred is $176.99. Mil-Surp can be had for even less. Bill T.

300 Grain Sierra Matchkings in .338 are up to $264.99 for a 500 count box.

At $2.56 a round (for presumbly unloaded brass), someone's going to have to seriously piss me off before I pull the trigger. ;D Still, its no different than boats or flyfishing I guess. The second you enter the store, grab a bottle of KY because you're going to need it. :-\
FQ13 who wants pics, a range report and where you found a range after you buy this beast. I would love to find something more than a 100 yard range. Hell, we could carpool. I'll buy the gas if you buy the ammo. ;D
-
At $2.56 a round, someone's going to have to seriously piss me off.
500 brass = $1,279.95
500 bullets = $264.99
500 Federal 215 Magnum Primers = $16.75
Powder for 500 rounds @ 105 grains per round X 500 rounds = 52,500 grains divided by 7,000 grains per pound = 7.5 pounds. 8 pound jug of Reloader 25 = $169.95 (Approx.).
Total component cost for 500 rounds is $1,731.64 Divided by 500 = $3.46 a round. A little less if you amortize the brass cost over 3 or 4 rounds. Not much less than shooting a .50 BMG. Bill T.
-
Actually, shooting a .50 BMG is cheaper with Mil-Surp ammo.
http://www.50bmgsupply.com/ammo.shtml
If you buy 1,000 rounds of API from .50 BMG Supply, you can get the cost down to $2.80 a round. I have 100 rounds of Summit APIT .50 BMG coming today from Natchez. Bill T.

I wish you both the joy of your guns and wish I could play in that league, but when you start talking $2800 for ammo? The Quaker will fold and leave the table. I still want to live vicariously through range reports though. ;D

New factory ammo runs about $115 for 20 shots. I think I could probably afford about 100 shots per year.

300 grain projectile retains twice the energy at 1 mile as a .45 ACP at the muzzle! Geeeezzzuuusss!!! That would knock the starch out of ya. Nice TW. I hope I get my American Rifleman today.

.338 Lapua at $63.99 for 10

Federal .50 BMG at $44.49 for 10. Cheaper, bigger, badder. Bill T.

At $340.99 a box of 20, this Federal .470 Nitro Express ammunition was the most expensive I could find from Midway. It comes to $17.05 a round. I think .700 Nitro Express is even more, but I can't find anyone who carries it. Bill T.

$382.99 for a box of 5 rounds. That works out to 76.60 per round. Easily beats the .470!

This is not the Saturday go to the range and blow through 100 rd. rifle. Heck, my 1891 Argentine Mauser, is just fine with 15-25 rds.(Than my shoulder is sore for an extra day),... Plus, for now, I have the up close defensive "inside the wire" assortment covered. This rifle would be for another application.
First, since I was a kid, with a Crossman 760 air pump BB/pellet rifle, I have loved rifle shooting. Pistol shooting was the cats meow, BUT rifle shooting, "The Art Of The Rifle", which I have been reading again....has always been a pursuit of never ending improvement.
"The rifle is a weapon. Let there be no mistake about that. It is a tool of power, and thus dependent completely upon the moral stature of its user. It is equally useful in securing meat for the table, destroying group enemies on the battlefield, and resisting tyranny. In fact, it is the only means of resisting tyranny, since a citizenry armed with rifles simply cannot be tyrannized."
My Sig556, Saiga AK, Winchester 30-30, Mauser, and 10/22, love them all, for what they are. This would take it to the level that would be the top of the heap. (until I win the powerball),.. ;)
Doesn't happen often, but when you have that hard to describe feeling, that target, that "zone", than it is just a matter of time.
Next year, I'll get the Sharps. ;D
Thanks for all the posts.

I just received my new American Rifleman Magazine for March and the Savage 110 BA is the cover rifle along with a feature article. Good reading! I just hope they sell the bolt handle. I'd like to replace the one on my 10-FP and 110 FCP-K with it. Bill T.

Unless I read this wrong there is a big misunderstanding. The .338 Lapua approaches 5000 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle, but at 300 yards it has from 2600-3200 Ft/lbs dependent on the load. Was this a typo?

"Sort of" a typo. The chart you posted is pretty close. It shows 4,924 ft. pounds at the muzzle with a 210 grain bullet, and 3,209 ft. pounds at 300 yards. On the chart velocity is on the left, energy on the right. It is worded incorrectly because muzzle energy is obviously at the muzzle. Energy at 300 yards is at 300 yards. The only way you could measure muzzle energy at 300 yards would be with a 900 foot barrel. ;D Bill T.
-
http://www.cpcartridge.com/338lapua-B.htm
Article was specific to muzzle. This clears it up, with rds. up to 275 gr.
300yds. with a 250gr. Barnes hits at 2999 ft/lbs energy, NOT 5000.... ;)
500 yds, anywhere between 1750 & 2250.
Bottom line. It will "thump" the target, really, really, really, really, hard.... 4 legs, 2 legs, 4 wheels, etc,... those Zombies are going DOWN!
