Title: Internet Speed
Post by: philw on February 17, 2010, 03:12:18 AM
over here   we hear  quite a bit about how good your internet connections are

thought lets test this   http://www.speedtest.net

I have an ADSL 2 plan  however due to living 7km from the exchange   i don't get the best speeds  could be worse though

(http://www.speedtest.net/result/719504464.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)

also  where  we cop it a lot   I am paying  $69.95  for my connection  that includes  50gb of data per month  if I go over that  then I get shaped  to dial up speeds  ( happens every now and then )

Three miles from the host is nothing.  The data cap is insane, it ridiculous.  In the Land of the Free, I've never seen a data or time cap for ten or fifteen years since dial up, we've got unlimited internet usage.  I'm paying 40 bucks, for a 7 down, 1.5 up.  I've got, at home, a 24/7 server box that constantly runs; file version control (SVN on https), a FTP server, Teamspeak, and various internet game servers.  I transfer OUT data constantly, I couldn't even begin to think how much that server box takes in.

Unless your using fiber I don't think your reading the numbers, or conversions, right.  Seven up's a whole lot...maybe seven kilo bits. ;)

Now that you have seen that, I will let you know I am using a Satelite connection since we live off grid in the sticks.  For me it is this or nothing, but it works pretty good.

For now, Qwest's DSL - in town. Service has been noticeably slow the last few weeks. I will call tomorrow and see what's up, but I am supposed to swap out on Friday to local cable - better service and 1/3 less money.

it can actuly  ( well over here )   due to the old phone lines we have

On the graph, the blue and green shaded areas show the theoretical maximum speeds you can obtain on Internode Extreme ADSL2+ services, at various distances from your local telephone exchange using either an ADSL1 or ADSL2+ broadband modem
