Title: Stupid Homeland Security trick - "Now where did we put those 200 guns?"

The nation’s Homeland Security officers lost nearly 200 guns in bowling alleys, public restrooms, unlocked cars and other unsecure areas, with some ending up in the hands of felons. The problem, outlined in a new federal report, has prompted disciplinary actions and extra training.

Most of the misplaced weapons — including handguns, shotguns and military rifles — were never found. “Most losses occurred because officers did not properly secure firearms,” says the Homeland Security inspector general report.

How do you lose a gun?   I mean WTF, how do you lose a gun?

I can understand some one broke into a car/house/ depot and steal them,  or you are hurt badly( say shot or car wreck) and some one takes it or its left at the scene.   Other then that, I don't understand how one could lose a gun.

What kind of a chucklehead leaves a vehicle unlocked that has a gun inside?  And bowling alleys?  What, did they mistake their guns for bowling shoes and return them to the shoe counter at the end of the night?

I've lost a LOT of things in my life:  money, my virginity (actually I gave that away), my mind, etc, but I have NEVER lost or misplaced a gun.

SHEESH!!

Barney has one too many tacos at lunch.
Later on, the urge hits.
Barney runs into local bowling alley restroom for quick relief.
Barney drops his pants.
Gun slides out of el cheapo holster next to toilet.
Barney pulls up his pants and fails to notice the missing 30 oz. of weight because he is so focused on the relief.
An hour later, Barney reaches back for his wallet and realizes his heater is gone.
OOOFFF!!!
Barney races back to bowling alley restroom only to find that he is now in deeper doo doo than if he'd have just let the taco go in the car.

Meanwhile......17 year old Freddie is showing of his new gat to his friends out in the parking lot.......

I had a cousin that was a FBI agent for 25 years all under hoovers rain,  he told me more then once, losing your gun was grounds for instant termination.  No chance to retire, no getting put behind a desk.  "give me your badge, and here is your last check."

I think we need to go back to that, it sure would stop these people losing thier weapons.

"Hold my gun for second, and watch this."

I'll go you one further.  Hold Barney Fife criminally liable for any crime committed with the weapon he/she "lost".  Almost every state in the union has laws on the books that make allowing a gun to fall into the wrong hands a criminal offense for J.Q. Public.  Why is Barney not held to the same standard?

You know, I've just changed my mind about gun control if you can't keep track of 200 + firearms you shouldn't be allowed to have them, let alone run healthcare >:(

Memo to BATFE: you might want to raid the Department of Homeland Security. After all, it has lost a rather large number of firearms. If an FFL dealer lost this many guns, the license holder would be in jail (with his house burned to the ground and his dogs shot). Just a thought...

Good find, Eric.... and right on the money.
How are they supposed to 'police' us when they can't police themselves all that well?

Sadly, some LEOs and security types fall under the 'familiarity breeds complacency' paraphrase.  I'm gratified the numbers aren't larger.

In my line of work, any 'unsafe handling of firearms' is cause for immediate termination, as it should be.  Ask the guy who was fast drawing himself in a customer's bathroom mirror and shot it.

After making the Barney comments in my previous post, I would like to clarify one thing. I have a lot of friends in the LEO line of work at levels ranging all the way from local to federal and every place in between. My comments on LEO ineptitude are wholly based on the few "Barny Fife's" that make the others look bad. There are good cops, bad cops, skilled cops, and un-skilled cops.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for the men and women who are 'on the job' for all the right reasons.
