Title: Glock 17 & 23 w/ selectable fire????
Post by: True_Texan on February 19, 2010, 11:55:52 PM
Figured I would turn to you guys/gals to help me out on this one.

There is someone (an online acquaintance) trying to tell me that Glock produces a model 17 and 23 with the option of a three-round burst for LEO and Military. I've asked him for links to any such info on them and he hasn't given me anything about it.

I haven't been able to find anything out about this with online searches. I keep telling him, the only Glock that I know of with that capability is the Glock 18. Of course, he is saying they make the frames (which I assume he means slides) that will turn the 17 and 23 into burst fire capable guns. The frames verses slide remark make me question his knowledge even more, like someone saying Clip instead of Magazine (you know right away they are full of it).  ;D

Many thanks everyone,
True Texan

I too have only heard of the 18 being full auto. I don't think 3 round burts are an option.

I'm with him on this! Or why you would you want one even for Military or LEO. A rifle is hard enough to control on burst let alone a pistol! The target in this picture is my Qualification Target with the M16A2. All the rounds in the lower left corner of the target are from Burst Fire at the 50 meter silhouette. First rounds where right on target, but the rest all hit left on the shoulder or worse missed. The misses at the top of the target were slow fire kneeling, my fault for missing. That's my worst position, need to work on it I know. I was well on my way to a perfect score till the kneeling. :(

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that didn't know that was an option, but in looking for the mystical 17 or 23 with burst fire, I came across some stuff talking about the 18 with select fire - Semi/3 rd burst/full auto, although I am still not convinced that is a real option. (Sketchy online sources if you ask me.)

... Or why you would you want one even for Military or LEO. ...

That was my exact same thought on that.

I would love to have one for the fun factor ;D but if I were issued one in the military I don't think I would ever use the Burst or FullAuto selector. :P Just be wasting ammo! ;D

They did it at Beretta, the Model 93 R.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beretta_93R

The Beretta Model 93R is a selective-fire machine pistol produced by the Italian weapons manufacturer Beretta. It is a derivative of the Model 92. The "R" stands for Raffica which translates to "burst" in Italian. The pistol was designed in the 1970s and meant for police and military use.

A selector switch and the foldable foregrip allows the pistol to fire in an automatic mode for a cyclic rate of 1100 rounds per minute. The designers have added a semi automatic mode to allow the user to have more control. The 93R is a Beretta 92 series pistol but the 93R is single action and outfitted with a muzzle brake, an optional detachable shoulder stock and a 20-round magazine that also allowed for a firmer grip. The foldable foregrip works by letting the right hand carry out its normal function of operating the trigger and grasping the butt. For the left hand, a small grip is folded down in front of the longer trigger guard. The operator inserts his left thumb in the front of the trigger guard and the rest of the fingers of the left hand grab the front grip.[1] This kind of grip is much steadier than the usual two-handed grip around the butt as both hands are spaced to provide a longer holding base.

The 93R is currently out of production.

This on the Glock 18 ;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glock_pistol

The Glock 18 is a selective fire variant of the Glock 17, developed at the request of the Austrian counter-terrorist unit EKO Cobra. This machine pistol-class firearm has a lever-type fire-control selector switch, installed on the left side of the slide, in the rear, serrated portion (selector lever in the bottom position—continuous fire, top setting—single fire). The firearm is typically used with an extended 33-round capacity magazine, although other magazines from the Glock will also function, with available capacities of 10, 17, or 19 rounds. Early Glock 18s were ported to reduce muzzle rise during automatic fire. Another compensated variant was also produced, known as the Glock 18C. It has a keyhole opening cut into the forward portion of the slide, not unlike the opening on the Glock long-slide models, although the G18 has a standard-length slide. The keyhole opening provides a venting area to allow the four, progressively-larger (from back to front) compensator cuts machined into the barrel to accomplish their job, which is to afford more control over the rapid-firing machine pistol. The compensator cuts, of varying widths start about halfway back on the top. The rear two cuts are narrow, while the front two cuts are wider. The slide is also hollowed, or dished-out in a rectangular pattern between the rear of the ejection port and the rear sight. The pistol’s rate of fire in fully automatic mode is approximately 1100–1200 rounds/min. Most of the other characteristics are equivalent to the Glock 17, although the slide, frame, and certain fire-control parts of the Glock 18 are not interchangeable with other Glock model

I saw the Wiki on the Glock 18 too but found other 'online crap' that had descriptions claiming a 3 round burst as an option.

It has 3 modes, semi auto, 3 round burst, or full auto.

And more 'online crap' saying just 2 modes for the 18:

selector lever in the bottom position for continuous fire, top setting for single fire

Either way, I am pretty sure the dude is wrong. Plus I am just going to stick with my original thoughts and say Glock 18 only has 2 options of fire and there is no such thing as a Glock pistol with burst fire.

All this aggravation started over a horribly inaccurate gun option on a video game and someone asking questions. LMAO!!!

I saw this on the movie Broken Arrow, I think that was the movie anyway. I'm pretty sure John Travolta was the actor.

There was a company that advertised a drop-in kit for Glocks. The selector was on the backplate of the slide. I only remember two modes, don't remember if the other was burst or full auto.  Don't know if it ever was real or only a SHOT concept.

One of the coolest scenes in Shooting Gallery was MB walking across the range while firing the G18. I love that shot.

Concur on the Glock 18 as the only select fire variant.  Beretta also made the 951 in a machine pistol version.  If you rememeber in Terminator 3, young John has a Glock machine pistol also.  Looked like a G19, but propably a Holloywood gun anyway.
