On your reccomendation I purchased a new Stoeger Double Defense in 20 gauge. I love the simplicity of this piece. I have one question concerning the upper optics though. Is there any thing a little less expensive than the Burris Red Dot that I could install instead? I just can't justify the price.

I have a Stoeger coach gun. Don't really have to aim........just point and squeeze. Anybody coming in is going right back out ! Don't have to open the door either!

Just for curiosity, shoot it without optics, at SD distances, with a #2 9 pellet, or go up to #4, #7, shot. What is the result?
Try it with your eyes closed, from the ready position, what is the result? Optics on a coach gun?
I have one as well, and it is kinda the double barrel the bartender pulled out from under the bar when things got out of control.
Just kinda point in the direction of the target,....you'll hit it..

+1,...For a longer range shot, I'll grab my 870 Express Magnum, also with no optics. Just a small streamlight.

I dont think you need a red dot on that street sweeper. The Burris is a very good sight and can take the pounding. I have them on a Kinber 10mm. my 5.7 FN and sp90.

This is an across the room gun (assuming you bought the short barrel). My advice, assume 15' and screw sights. Figure a 3"-4" spread with ' 00. Its no different than quail. Both eyes open and point and click. I'm not a fan of bird shot for SD, others here disagree. Me, I'd take it to the range and pattern a few shot sizes (please nothing smaller than #6 and that, to me is beyond pushing it), at across the living room distances and go with what works. If you need sights, you're not understanding what you have. I wanted ghost rings for my Maverick, but that's just because I see it as a back-up pig gun. SD, the BG is a very large quail.

I took the Double Defense 20 gauge to the range yesterday and was really amazed at how the gun shot. Buckshot at 10 yds. gave a good pattern. Recoil was minimal and shot from hip and both sides of shoulder. To me this is the ideal close range defense weapon that my wife and I both can handle. I may just order the 12 gauge also down the road. Nothing negative to report except a slightly brused arm from not shouldering the weapon properly a couple of times.

I would opt for a good lighting system over the optic. Even as Clint Smith did with a flashlight held on by rubber bands.

I think Benny speaks the truth here. Might I suggest a site for a flashlight that someone here turned me on to www.all-battery.com (http://www.all-battery.com) . I bought a couple of their Tenergy LED lights and I love them...paid $30 for each though now they are $50. Maybe they'll go down again.... Watch close to the description....some called tactical (that's t-a-c-t-i-c-a-l with a whine Mr. Bane ;D ) do not have the strobe...others do. I got the one with two CR123 batteries and no strobe but a nice striker bezel and the small single battery with the strobe (and SOS) but no striker bezel.
