Anyone know how effective the home defense rounds for 7.62x39 are such as the ammo made from Corbon, 7.62x39 130gr Glaser (http://www.dakotaammo.net/Glaser-Safety-Slug/762x39-130gr-Glaser/05600/500/Product).

I suppose any frangible round would be better than a FMJ. Only difference would be velocities compared to a handgun. I understand some LEAs use them in rifles for CQC. I have never tried them .

Saftey slugs scare me. Its an irrational fear, but I shot some .22 rat shot by Blazer I belive back in the day that used the same idea. Turned a nylon 66! into a jam-o-matic. Apples and oranges I know, I just don't tust the gel in a semi-auto for SD, (revolvers are a different story). Still, how close are your neighbors? No one likes an AK for SD unless they post here. If you have an overpenetration problem, it won't look good to a DA. "Gun nut kills two burglars, a five year old and three housecats! Al Queda ties suspected! News at 11!". I would do some serious research on reliability and penetration of Glasers in an AK, as well as look for penetration info. If you've got some woods, make your own "box'o truth". Otherwise, I'd buy a cheap 12 gauge. If you live in the sticks, ignore the above and use wolf FMJ or HP, just use lots. ;D

I don't think that its rubbery like Hornady ammo, its a hard polymer, but there are other frangibles made just of tin or compressed lead. I wouldn't load a weapon with ammo if I wasn't confident in it. You can always load the first five rounds frangible and the rest JHP. Cycle out the failures if you need to, it would suck though. I don't think that hurting a neighbor should be as big a priority as your own family. I'd use the FMJ to stop the crime being committed against you and your family and risk the property damage, actually hitting a person in another house, I imagine, is pretty hard to do.

I'm trying to use what I have and should an issue occur and what gun am I willing to lose shoud it ever be taken away.
I have better calibers for home defense, just not the right guns / config or something that I leave out all the time defense
I've checked out box o' truth, but he never covered a 7.62x39 for self defense.
I would buy another 12 gauge like the new Winchester Defender or a Mossberg, but I'm still paying for the new gun I got in last November. >:(

Agreed, it is hard to do, but if we're having the kind of day that requires using a gun in the living room..... With our luck we'd both do it, and her little dog Toto too. :-\

Mark Twain once said that a "Boy who could not hit a Cathedral with a Gatling gun could pick off Granma at 100 yards with an unloaded gun"
The same applies to SD misses.
